(Barclay, Alexander (c. 1484-1552); poet and clergyman; birth date and place unknown; date of birth usually given as 1475 or 1476 on the ground that he gives his age as thirty-eight in the prologue to his Eclogues, parts of which were written as early as 1513 or 1514, but it is not known when the prologue was composed; ordained priest in 1508; seems more likely that he was born around 1484, since the priesthood was not conferred until age 24; in 1513 became a Benedictine monk in Ely Cathedral priory; left Ely to become a Franciscan between 1521 and 1528; died at Croyden, Surrey in June 1552)
