He was born into slavery and became a pastor in a black Baptist church inDenver, Colorado (1865-1872). He sailed to Manchester, England (1876) where he studied at Pastor's College, London (1876), eventually becoing a missionary in Cameroon, West Africa (1878). He published a short autobiography, Africa for Christ: Twenty-eight Years a Slave, London (1882). He toured the United States promoting missionary efforts in Africa (1887), published hymns (1897) and became vice-chairman of the Pan-African Conference committee, London (1900). He gave lectures on slavery which were published in a collection, Britain (1907); he died 11 March, 1921 in Bournemouth, England)‏
