670 ‎‡a Australian Dictionary of Biography (online) 24 September 2024:‏ ‎‡b (William Thomas (1793-1867), assistant protector and guardian of Aboriginals, was born in Westminster, England, of Welsh parents. In 1837 he was appointed an assistant to the Protector of Aboriginals of the Port Phillip District, arriving in Melbourne in 1838; he established a base in Narre Warren in 1839, and after realizing that civilizing of the Aboriginals was unlikely to occur rapidly he concentrated on the practical tasks of keeping them alive, shepherding them away from the temptations of city life and maintaining harmony between black and white. The Protector Robinson gave huim little support; he kept a detailed diary and notes, much of which were lost, but the remaining documents are significant sources. From 1860 he was moved to other areas around Melbourne, but he was chief government adviser on Aboriginal affairs and was the most influential witness at the 1858-59 select committee of the Legislative Council on Aborigines. His health failed in 1860, and he died in Brunswick on 1 December 1867. He was more successful than any other first generation settler in attempting to comprehend and sustain Aboriginal society; his advocacy of Aboriginal causes made him unpopular in colonial society.)‏ ‎‡u https://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/thomas-william-2727‏
