D. from the University of Michigan in 1939; Dr. Bell was an instructor at The University of Texas at Austin in 1940-1941; after serving in the armed forces during World War II, he taught at the University of Minnesota from 1946 to 1953; he joined the permanent faculty of the University of Texas at Austin in 1953, where he taught until his retirement in 1972; Professor Bell's research interests included Cambrian, Ordovician, and Pennsylvanian stratigraphy; he coauthored Early Upper Cambrian Faunas of Central Montana (1944); he also published a number of his research findings in the Journal of Paleontology and in the Geological Society of America Bulletin; he was a member of the Paleontological Society and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists)‏
