670 ‎‡a ancestry, January 9, 2014‏ ‎‡b (Charles Hugh Egerton Smyth; born March 31, 1903 in Ningpo, China; died October 29, 1987 in Kingsclere and Whitchurch, Hampshire, England; Canon Charles Smyth was a Fellow of Corpus Christie College, Cambridge, and a distinguished church historian; born in China in 1903, where his father was a Doctor, Charles Hugh Egerton Smyth was educated at Repton and at Corpus Christie College, Cambridge, where he was a scholar; at Cambridge he took a double first in the history tripos; in the following year, 1926, he went on to teach history at Harvard, but soon returned, having decided to enter Wells Theological College to prepare for Holy Orders; ordination in 1929 did not remove him immediately from academic work, for in the same year he was appointed University Lecturer in History at Cambridge; he left this post in 1932 to undertake parish work as a curate, first in Islington then in Chelsea; returning to Cambridge in 1936 as curate of St. Giles, he became Dean of Chapel at Corpus Christie College in the following year, and was almost immediately appointed as honorary Canon of Derby Cathedral; eventually he became a Canon Emetrius both of Derby and of Lincoln; in 1946 he was appointed Rector of St. Margaret's, Westminster, and a Canon of Westminster; at the early age of 53 he resigned from St. Margaret's and returned once more to Cambridge to write the biography of Archbishop Cyril Garbett)‏
