NORWALK AND HARTFORD. TENTS HAVE STARTED GOING UP AROUND WESTERN GATEWAY PARK IN DOWNTOWN FOR THE DES MOINES ARTS FESTIVAL. THE EVENT STARTS FRIDAY, BUT KCCI’S PEPPER PURPURA GOT A LOOK AT THE WORK ALREADY UNDERWAY. PEPPER. YES, STACEY, THE FESTIVAL IS TWO DAYS AWAY, BUT ROSE IN DOWNTOWN ARE CLOSING NOW WHILE ORGANIZERS PREPARE FOR THE EVENT THAT BRINGS IN MORE THAN 200,000 PEOPLE EACH YEAR, LAYING THE FINAL VARNISH ON CANVASES. I AM BEYOND EXCITED. IT’S LIKE A PINCH ME MOMENT. IT’S JUST IT’S SUPER EXCITING AND BOLTING DOWN BOOTHS. THE STAGES COME IN, WE’VE GOT TENTS GOING UP TWO DAYS UNTIL THE DES MOINES ART FESTIVAL. ARTISTS AND ORGANIZERS ARE MAKING THEIR FINAL PREPARATIONS. WE’VE BEEN ATTENDING THE FESTIVAL FOR OVER 20 YEARS AND I’VE JUST BEEN AN ART COLLECTOR, SUPPORTING THE ARTS TO BE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF IT, WHERE NOW I’M IN THE BOOTH SHOWING MY ARTWORK INSTEAD OF THE PERSON THAT’S GOING AROUND WISHING TO BE THERE. IT JUST IT’S SUPER EXCITING FOR ME. ALMOST 200 ARTISTS ARE PLANNING TO LINE GRAND AND LOCUST AVENUE FROM 10TH TO 16TH STREET ON FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. LOCUST SHUT DOWN WEDNESDAY AS SETUP BEGAN AND ON THURSDAY THE ARTISTS ARE GOING TO START LOADING IN. AND SO YOU’RE GOING TO SEE LOTS OF, UH, ARTISTS COMING IN THROUGH GRAND AVENUE FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY BRINGING THEIR CRAFT TO DES MOINES, JURIED ARTISTS THAT COME IN. THEY REALLY SHOWCASE WHAT YOU CAN DO IF YOU’RE GOING TO BE THE BEST OF THE BEST IN THE ARTS INDUSTRY AND SUPPORTING IOWA’S HOME GROWN TALENT, I FEEL LIKE I’M GETTING A BROADER VIEWERSHIP. PEOPLE SEEM TO BE CONNECTING IT. HE DOES A LOT OF THE BEHIND THE EVENT IS FREE, AND IN ADDITION TO THE ARTISTS, WILL HAVE TWO LIVE MUSIC STAGES, A FILM FESTIVAL AND

After the tailgate fun, Capital City Pride will take over Principal Park for a fabulous evening out. Tickets can also be purchased at the Demonstration Garden in Urbandale across from Valerius Elementary on 92nd and Dewey Gibbs Road.During this one-day annual event, Master Gardeners and other gardening enthusiasts show off their extraordinary gardens. This is a family friendly event with gardening resources and activities for children and adults. The tour will delight your senses, stimulate your curiosity, and inspire new ideas as you venture through seven gardens in the Metro Area.These home gardens reveal a variety of backyard spaces with patios, garden paths, garden features, perennial beds, water gardens, pollinator gardens and bountiful vegetable spaces. Shade or sun, inspiration abounds, all with the addition of a few native plantings and other alternative spaces.Enjoy a breathtaking display of color and fragrance as you experience the activities and wander through the vegetable and flower gardens of Polk County Master Gardeners.Locations for the gardens will be emailed to those who purchase a ticket online. Those who stop at the Demonstration Garden will receive the addresses in person.The garden tour will happen rain or shine.Metro Park East Landfill tour, 12181 NE University Ave. in Mitchellville3 p.m. to 5 p.m.Cost: FreeHave you ever wondered where your garbage goes after it leaves the curb, how yard waste is turned into compost, or what happens to those appliances you tossed out?Join Metro Waste Authority on Saturday, June 29, to learn about all this and more!From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., the agency is offering a free, behind-the-scenes driving tour of Metro Park East Landfill, the largest landfill in Iowa.The educational tour, which will take about 30 minutes to complete, will follow the journey of garbage, recycling, and yard waste once it arrives at the site and will show an up-close look at waste disposal zones, habitat preservation areas, and a variety of innovative recycling initiatives.Informative audio clips will be available at each stop along the way. Guests will also enjoy a scavenger hunt and view a garbage truck and other large equipment. Lilies from Iowa and surrounding states, plus a number of floral designs and photos, will fill Reiman Gardens' Events Hall with color and beauty as we host the Iowa Regional Lily Society’s Annual Lily Show again this year. The day starts early with the IRLS cleaning and preparing the lily stems and assembling floral designs. Judging of the entries takes place from about 10 a.m. to noon, and then the show opens to the public, and the award-winning lilies are placed at the head table for everyone to see and appreciate.The IRLS Lily Show is held in a public place to educate the general public about the various exotic colors, shapes, and fragrances of lilies.
