CHAPTER 1

THE PATIENT

SEPTEMBER 2011ASHLAND CITY HOSPITAL, ASHLAND CITY, TENNESSEE

He was an eighty-two-year-old, proud Alabama boy, lying in theintensive care unit, and while I didn't yet know his time of death, Ialready knew the cause.

For more than a year, he had been struggling with myelodysplasticsyndrome—his bone marrow had stopped producing the bloodcells needed to fight off infection. He was immunocompromisedand had developed a severe staph infection that was almost impossibleto treat. His body had become septic, and the inflammationwas devastating his organs. I knew his days were numbered, but Icouldn't stand the thought of his passing.

I had known him all my life. He was a teacher and a farmer—intelligentand determined, proud and stubborn. He was also aman of great faith. He didn't see any reason to prolong his life onearth past the purpose God had for him. Like many of my elderlypatients, he believed that he had an appointment with heaven andthat Jesus was waiting for him on the other side.

As a doctor, I've seen what happens to the patient whose lovedones hang on too long. They desperately cling to their familymember, demanding that doctors use extraordinary means to keepthat person here when, really, the dying believer just wants toslip gently to the other side. Sometimes doctors can postpone apatient's death for weeks or months, but it often involves drasticmeasures with the person being kept alive by machines and feedingtubes. The patient's quality of life isn't what relatives expectwhen they initially make the decision, and it's rarely what a patientdesires.

Whenever God called him home, he was ready.

I didn't want this patient kept alive by machines, and he didn'twant it either. But I had good reasons to lengthen his life. He had aclose, extended family, some of whom lived out of town and wanteda chance to say goodbye. With intensive medical intervention, Icould postpone his death long enough to allow them the opportunityto see him one last time. His family wasn't ready to let him go,and I understood that in the most intimate way possible. I wasn'tready for him to be gone either.

I thought of other deaths I had witnessed—includingan unforgettable experience that happened while I was a medical resident.

* * *

Throughout medical school I had taken care of dying patients, butthis was the first time that I, as the senior resident, would be theone in charge when a patient died. I didn't know what to expect.

"Dr. Anderson," the elderly woman began, her voice starting tofade. "Will you hold my hand? I'm going to see Jesus, and I need anescort."

That night, I experienced the veil parting—the veil that separatesthis life from the next. As I held the dying woman's hands, I felt thewarmth of her soul pass by my cheek when it left her body, sweptup by an inexplicably cool breeze in an otherwise stagnant room.I smelled the familiar fragrance of lilac and citrus, and I knew theveil was parting to allow her soul to pass through.

Since that first patient, I've walked with countless others to thedoorstep of heaven and watched them enter paradise. On many occasions,as I held hands with the dying, God allowed me to peer intoheaven's entryway where I watched each patient slip into the nextworld.

I've sensed Jesus on the other side, standing in heaven's foyer, welcomingthe dead who are made whole again. I've glimpsed surrealcolors and sights and heard sounds more intense than anything I'veever experienced in this ordinary world. I've inhaled the scents oflilac, citrus, freshly carved cedar, and baking bread—more fragrantthan I ever thought possible.

Sometimes I've even witnessed patients leave this world and comeback. As they've shared their stories with me, I've often rememberedthe time early in my life when God allowed me to step into heaven'sfoyer, even though I no longer believed he was real.

The one thing these experiences have in common is the intensityof the sights, sounds, fragrances, and feelings that I sensed. Heavenis more real than anything we experience here, and the sense ofpeace, joy, and overwhelming love is beyond description.

* * *

Memories of other dying patients, as well as my personal glimpsesinto heaven, drifted through my mind as I sat at my patient's bedsidein the ICU that day. I had every confidence that what awaitedhim would be more joyous than anything he'd ever experienced.But, selfishly, I wasn't ready to see him disappear through the opening.As the attending physician, the family looked to me for guidance.I could recommend a blood transfusion that would prolonghis life for a few more days; with several transfusions, maybe I couldextend it a week or more.

Or I could let him go.

Either way, I knew that he and his family would listen to me anddo what I suggested.

I had a difficult decision to make, and my medical decisions werecomplicated by what my patients and I had experienced on heaven'sside of the veil. But my struggle was even greater because of who I was.

I wasn't just the patient's physician—I was also his son.

Dr Reggie Anderson wrote a great book and a great autobiography he is believable and kind and intelligent and his spiritual growth is moving for unlike most books The problem of evil is ignored and most of us have a hard Time reconciling true belief with the torture that goes on in our world I think Dr. Anderson's experience is one of the most relevant things in any book that helps us to understand faith God and love I thank him for putting the effort into writing this book having gone through my own crisis and now dealing with illness it is so important to hear the voice of the believer not necessarily some ndePerson The literature of belief and an afterlife has benefited enormously by this book Don't miss it it's the bridge to understanding our purpose on earth thank you again Dr. Anderson

This is a great book. Actually autobiography of country medical doctor who by chance was psychic and had experienced tragedy and triumph in his life. It was very interesting and could have been made into movie.

He could predict his winning lottery when he was young. When he was still young, he met tragedy. Originally religious boy became non-believer of God by confronting with this most hideous atrocity - massacre of 6 whole family of his cousins by escaped convicts, of whom he befriended with when he was helping watermelon sale in local country fair. This was historical happening - one of the worst crimes committed in the State. He lost faith as a result of this tragedy, but while growing up, he met his sweet heart who was religious. And he became Christian again after he dreamed of his murdered cousins. And the story goes to his life successfully developing and of his becoming medical doctor and helping people in country side.

He became familiar with dying procedure while attending patients on their death beds. He witnessed of dying patients showed paranormal phenomena. He could experiences the heaven himself while attending patients.

Anyway, this was great book as life story and as search for God story. I am not religious person, but I could believe what was written in this book.
Heart warming life story with unconditional love everywhere. I am glad to know such fine country Doctor still exist in this greedy world. His story makes me believe that afterlife exists and heaven is not so far away.

I loved this book, so I recommended in my Japanese blog, introducing what contents this great book had.

I am happy to recommend without reserve of this wonderful, interesting auto-biography.

I agree with one disappointed reader that the inside of the book was not at all what I expected: less about people passing from this life to the next and more about this author's own spiritual journey. But the story is so well told that it captivated me right away. Yes, it is written from a Southern Evangelical's perspective, but read carefully. It's a very truthful account written by a physician who faces scorn from colleagues for his honest spiritual approach to the practice of medicine and his honesty about his own spiritual experiences. I'm sure if he'd been a little more "New Age-y" he would have a bigger best seller on his hands. Instead, what Dr. Anderson presents is his real experience of the Divine in his life, experiences that have not only guided him but I'm sure have been of immense value to his patients and their families. One could only wish that everyone had a doctor like this! It was not what I expected, but has brought me joy to read, and no small degree of comfort. It's an honest spiritual memoir and the author's message is clear, though it might not be what everyone wants to hear: God is real; God intervenes in our lives out of his love for us; and, some, like Dr. Anderson, are blessed to be given certain divine gifts that are intended to be shared so that others of us, not so fully blessed as he (yet!), may find faith and joy.

If you are looking for a physician's perspective and experience with Near Death Experiences in the vain of Doctors Eben Alexander, George Ritchie, Raymond Moody or Mary C. Neal, this may not be your book. Dr. Anderson's experience in the afterlife came to him in a dream, whereas those I have mentioned personally experienced clinical death, each resulting in a powerful NDE. While virtually every book I've read concerning an NDE involved some type of "travel", Dr. Anderson's experience involves the soul passing through what he calls a veil. He believes that heaven and earthy existence are close to each other, virtually adjacent, and as I understood it, perhaps similar to two dimensions occupying the same space. He provides sincere and, I believe, very credible first hand experiences where he has witnessed the passing of patients "through the veil" into heaven. Perhaps, once through the veil, the soul then travels towards the light. Who am I to know or say?

Dr. Anderson is a Christian who places Jesus at the center of his life and, to me, this is what gives this book significant credibility. Those seeking to learn of heaven through the near death experiences of others need to be discerning of their source material, as this could be very fertile ground for the enemy. That being said, books such as this describing aspects of heaven can provide insight, hope and knowledge of the afterlife. I know some theologians decry these books (and movies) as blasphemy. Respectfully, I do not agree. As we close in on the end-times, Revelation refers us to Acts Chapter 2 verse 19 where God says, "I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below...." I view this book as the Lord showing us some of His wonders in heaven.

"Appointments with Heaven" is a very pleasant, well written piece of gentle literature. Even when he is telling of dark and brutal experiences that drove him from God; Dr. Anderson maintains a certain poise, leaving me to firmly believe that, as far as sinners go, he is a good person. His is a good book and I heartily recommend it.

Reggie Anderson is a great writer, carrying you on, effortlessly through his life story which is, at times, harrowing and difficult to identify with. His accounts of his experiences of heaven are not sensationalist, but are consistent throughout the book, and are indicative of a man who has been given a special sense of things, in order to endow him with a more empathic role as a Doctor. There is no doubt much more to be said on the topic of heaven, and near-death experiences and the like, than the author covers here, but even so my wife and I found this a valuable way of focusing on the reality of our spiritual destiny.

In short, a challenging read which leads you on to think more carefully about the way in which heaven interfaces with our own world.
