Mysterious and fun, captures interest and delight of new readers

Mysterious and fun, captures interest and delight of new readers
My daughter has just started reading on her own, and this has been her favorite so far! Many early readers are geared towards silly story lines, but this one manages simplicity with fun and excitement. The anticipation grows and the ending is satisfying. There's some play along the way with mom cutting out cookies super fast as she chants that there are no bears on hemlock mountain and nothing to be afraid of. My daughter commented that she had never thought of bears coming out of hibernation in spring quite like that before. The anticipation brings nature to life instead of just watching a special about bears. Definitely a classic. My daughter is a 10 year old with dyslexia and I am happy to find reading material this good that is also easy enough for her.

the price was high IMO for such a short book but it's a nice short simple little story and the problem solving the kid did was pretty smart and I like the simple cute illustrations.

A reluctant reader, my extremely active 8 yr old, wants to do it, fix it, build it but… not usually…read it. Attempting to encourage summer reading,
I expected a grim tugg of war on this not -a -zoo or skate board, or pickleball kind of day, but by the end of the first chpt. -he was totally engaged in the is there? Is there not? up the Mtn journey.
By an engaging quick read a loud, this child was captured by the pace up, down, and over Hemlock Mtn. Held his attention on a sleepy summers day but…Maybe even a better read on a dark snowy night? Or a fall evening over marshmellows and a fireside? A solid good read.

I don't know how I missed this one! What a great story about a little boy who perseveres at his task and uses ingenuity to escape danger. My granddaughter loved The Courage of Sarah Noble. This one, also by Alice Dalgliesh, is another a great story that I'm sure she will love. The repetition of certain lines makes it a great read-aloud for 4-5 year olds, and a great tale for young elementary children as well. Note to teachers: It's a good short one to keep the attention of students when time is limited.

This book is not what I expected. Online I couldn't tell that this was a thin book; I expected it was a normal-sized book that would take a bit of time to read, but no: I read it in one sitting and was able to read it aloud to my kids at bedtime in one go. It doesn't even have page numbers.

All that said, the story is sweet, and would be a great first chapter book for a child who just learned to read. Love the graphics, too. My kids draw while I read to them, and both of them were inspired to imitate some of the graphics from the book.

Just know when you purchase this that it's more like a picture book with a story than a chapter book that will take time to read. It's a quick one.

I bought this book to read aloud to my kindergartner. We read it over the course of a few evenings. I had never heard of it before but having read it now, I would definitely recommend. Lovely pictures and story! Teaches an interesting lesson.

Loved reading this to my 5 and 3 year old children on holiday. Short chapters and an easy to follow story with good illustrations. A nice step up from short picture books.

2.0 out of 5 stars Schullektüre, niedliches Buch, schlechter Einband!
Reviewed in Germany on June 5, 2015

Reviewed in Germany on June 7, 2016
