Editorial Reviews

Review

A pleasingly tactile exploration of the possibilities inherent in mistakes. "A torn piece of paper... is just the beginning!" Spills, folded paper, drips of paint, smudges and smears—they "all can make magic appear." An increasingly complex series of scenarios celebrates random accidents, encouraging artistic experimentation rather than discouragement. The folded-over paper can be a penguin's head; a torn piece of newsprint can turn into a smiling dog with a little application of paint; a hot-chocolate stain can become a bog for a frog. Thanks to a telescoping pop-up, a hole is filled with nearly limitless possibilities. The interactive elements work beautifully with the photo-collaged "mistakes," never overwhelming the intent with showiness. Saltzberg's trademark cartoon animals provide a sweetly childlike counterpoint to the artful scribbles and smears of gloppy paint. A festive invitation to creative liberation. -Kirkus Reviews

This book is a sensory experience!
Bought this impulsively but I'm so glad that I did. I'm a therapist and will use this with my ypung clients who struggle with low self esteem and perfectionism. Its targeted toward very young kids, but I can see up to 11 or 12 year olds appreciating it due to the creative pop-up style (who doesn't love pop-ups?)

My child (5) gets so upset with mistakes! If a line is drawn and it’s uneven she wants A WHOLE NEW PAPER! I searched for something to help with this, this book came up in my searches and has become one of their favorites! Now we have “look what I made, a beautiful oops.” It has definitely helped!

Great book!!

The book was a huge hit! I am a children's therapist and this book was great for family therapy activities that can be done again and again. It also came with a song that you can play on Youtube. I do recommend.

I have to say hands down, this is one of the best books I own. I read this book and through it was amazing. This book is all about mistakes. Not only that, it leads to greater and deeper discussions.

For example when I first opened this book for a group of kids to the torn paper, I asked them what they through and what they would do. The response was amazing. Of course it was only the first page so as the book went on, they reaction got stronger and the kids started to answer on a deeper level.

I also showed this to an adult. Okay it was a few adults but this book has lead to many philosophical discussions.

I have to say I like this book so much, I showed it to many educators and ordered ti for a few of them as well.

This book is amazing. The pictures are nice and it is all about beautifying a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes but the questions is what we do with our mistakes. For a child, seeing an alligator from a torn piece of paper is simple and easy for them to understand. An adult on the other hand might see a coffee spill as an expression of the mind.

I know this book is for kids up to the age of seven, but like I mentioned previously, I read it to kids ages 1 and a half to adults over forty. Mind you I only had this book for less then a month and the response is amazing.

Sorry for the long review but when I feel really passionate about something I get carried away.

Bottom line, if you are going to read this book from beginning to end as just a picture book then that is all you will see but if you start thinking and talking, this book is so much more. I just love this book.

Bought this for my son after he kept borrowing a well-loved copy from his school library. It's wonderfully done - engaging, creative and a great message. We love to read and explore it!

I have loved this book ever since the first time I read it to my children when they were young. That was about 12 years ago. This book’s message is still so clear and so appropriate for children and adults alike. I love the bright colors. I have purchased extra copies for other children and other adults alike. I recommend this book to everyone!

To summarize, the premise of this book is to show that making mistakes is okay--that you can turn mistakes into "beautiful oops." For example, in the first few pages, a rip in a page becomes the mouth of an alligator and paint spills turn into elephants. I saw my daughter's eyes light up with a new way of looking at the world (and "mistakes) when we read this book for the first time. It remains a go-to favorite, and makes for a great gift.

Furthermore, the artwork is fantastic--it has the aura and feel of an elementary school art classroom. Watercolor, different textures, and actual photographic elements combine to make this a very visually-appealing book for all ages.

Besides having a great concept and look, this book has unexpected and creative interactivity--The paper engineering is great--it's not just a simple flap here and there, but flaps--both paper and clear plastic--come at all angles, making it a fun challenge to find where to open them.

Best of all, this book is very durable. Despite the multitude of flaps, which I usually expect to be torn out if kids' aren't careful, the Oops book has stood the test of my 3 year-old. All the pages and flaps are laminated or have some kind of protective coating, and the pages are several layers thick.

We love this book and the message it teaches. My 4 year old has learnt to not get as frustrated when she makes “mistakes” when drawing. She turns her mistakes into beautiful oops and finds a way to create something else. It’s also fun to read because of the interactive design.
