Editorial Reviews

Amazon Review

Mr. Popper, when not painting or papering his neighbors' walls, has a persistent penchant for penguins. A decorator by day, he's an intrepid Antarctic explorer by night--at least in his imagination. Mr. Popper resigns himself to quiet evenings at home with his family and his travel books, until one day a mysterious package arrives. Pretty soon the Poppers have a house full of penguins, an ice rink in the basement, and an ever-increasing bill for raw fish and canned shrimp. Time to take this show on the road!

The Atwaters wrote this unforgettable tale in 1938, but its timeless charm shows no signs of aging. Children are invited to imagine, dream, and believe that anything is possible. Robert Lawson, illustrator ofThe Story of Ferdinand, offers delightfully humorous pictures--as integral to this classic as the story itself. An ideal read-aloud book for all ages,Mr. Popper's Penguinswill have any audience rolling in the aisles.(Ages 9 to 12)

FromAudioFile

An avid follower of Admiral Drake's radio broadcasts from the South Pole, housepainter Mr. Popper, of Stillwater, USA, receives an astonishing delivery from the Admiral, which has delighted readers for more than 50 years. Audio listeners have a singular opportunity to delight in this visit of penguins to 432 Proudfoot Avenue. Nick Sullivan brings unflappability to the tale. He is composed and straightforward as he enlivens each new character--from optimistic Mr. Popper to the exasperated-but-ever-polite Mrs. Popper to the delighted Popper children, who are ever ready to adapt to life with their new housemates. Sullivan also delivers fine penguin impersonations as Captain Cook and Greta, who are stars in the cross-country adventure of Popper's Performing Penguins. Book did not arrive in good shape
I'm sure the story will be great. I got this book to give to my granddaughter because it is a classic. However, the book is intended to be a gift, but sadly it arrived creased and not in very good shape. I believed this was a brand new book. Perhaps it is not?

This books was for a middle school child. He enjoyed the story and learned about some differences from the past (setting of the book) and the present. He liked the ending and found it surprising. The penguins were a hit too!;) The story is written well and starts with learning about the type of person the main character is and develops into an interesting tale. The only difficulty with this book for young readers is not necessarily knowing some of the older vocabulary, however I think the story outweighs this.

I've been dying to read this book with my 5 year old (who was penguin obsessed for a long time). We are having fun reading it to her and our 3 year old son. They love the humor. The chapters are short and easy to get through. And all the mischief keeps us laughing! Great book, happy to have it on our shelf!

This book was a favorite of mine as a child, and I've really enjoyed getting to share it now with my kids and their friends! It's a classic, but timeless and doesn't feel "old". Best of all, it's not a slog to read through out loud. I admit I don't 100% love reading out loud to kids (it makes me sleepy!), but this was one that doesn't feel like a chore:) Enjoy!
