Twelve-year-old Fern believes she's living a noble life--but what if everything she's been told is a lie? This is a huge-hearted story about a girl learning to question everything—and to trust in herself.

Fern’s lived at the Ranch, an off-the-grid, sustainable community in upstate New York, since she was six. The work is hard, but Fern admires the Ranch's leader, Dr. Ben. So when Fern’s mother sneaks them away in the middle of the night and says Dr. Ben is dangerous, Fern doesn't believe it. She wants desperately to go back, but her mom just keeps driving.

Suddenly thrust into the treacherous, toxic, outside world, Fern thinks only about how to get home again. She has a plan, but it will take time. As that time goes by, though, Fern realizes there are things she will miss from this place—the library, a friend from school, the ocean—and there are things she learned at the Ranch that are just...not true.

Now Fern will have to decide. How much is she willing to give up to return to the Ranch? Should she trust Dr. Ben’s vision for her life? Or listen to the growing feeling that she can live by her
ownrules?

I absolutely loved this book. It’s a tender look at the ups and downs of life through a middle schoolers’ lens. Kate O’Shauhnessy tells the story so well. I fell in love with Fern and only wanted the best for her.

The wrong way home is a great book for kids and adults. Kate O’Shaughnessy has done it again!

I read many middle grade realistic fiction books each year. For 2024 to date THE WRONG WAY HOME has been my favorite. The plot premise: a mother has chosen to take her twelve year old daughter and escape from a cult situation. This lifestyle is all her daughter has known for six years and in many ways very different from her first six. The daughter is very opposed to her mother's choice and is driven to find a way to return to the cult. Worthy of a Newbury award or honor I will leave to more experienced and knowledgeable folks. BUT, in my opinion a book NOT to be missed.

I read this upper middle grade story in two sittings. The writing is perfect, the plot is riveting, and the characters feel authentic. Very satisfying read!

I am a huge fan of all of Kate O’Shaughnessy’s work, and love watching her growth as an author. All of her books are whimsical, lovely, and tender hearted, and this one is all of that and more. While this novel has her trademark tender heart all over it, it also does an amazing job telling a tough story from a child’s perspective, and does so with lots of compassion. Adults and young readers alike will fall in love with Fern and the incredible journey she goes on. I loved watching Fern figure things out, and the beautiful relationship between mother and daughter that unfolds as Fern comes to understand her mom’s motives. Also, I absolutely LOVED the setting of this one and think Kate could teach a master class on crafting cozy atmospheres. Highly recommend to adult and young readers alike!!

The Wrong Way Home is a tender-hearted, aching journey about Fern, a girl who is trying to find her footing in a wholly new world that seems foreign, scary, and sometimes unwelcome. I think we can all relate–you will not be able to put this book down once you start, and the story will stay with you for a long while. I am a colossal fan of this author, and this book is my favorite of everything she's ever written, which is saying a lot since I adore her other books as well!

3.5. This is a hard one to rate. I love the premise of this story, and the settings are excellent. I felt like I could see it all in my head. However, the exposition of this story is overly long. It took me forever to get into the character, and my feelings about her didn’t change much. She’s just so naive that it might be hard for the tween crowd to relate to her. If the book was shorter, it might pick up some readers. I think the way this book is paced and the multiple storylines pretty much rule it out for struggling readers or English learners. Some students will be curious enough about the absolute strangeness of Fern’s experiences that’ll they’ll keep reading, and they’re in for a good tale, about choices, and what family is. Strong ideas that are worth reading about. I’d say it’s best for 7-8th grade girls who like reading.
