You can't really get to know the Word of God unless you apply it to your life.During his ministry Jesus had a number of encounters with the religious leaders ofhis time. These were primarily the Pharisees, the acknowledged scholars of the day;the scribes, legal and religious experts in Jewish law; and the Sadducees, the liberalizingelement in Jewish society at that time. On one occasion the Sadducees, whodid not believe in the resurrection from the dead, asked Jesus a trick question.Jesus' answer is indeed interesting. He said to them, 'You are in error becauseyou do not know the Scriptures or the power of God' (Matt. 22:29). The Sadduceeshad an intellectual knowledge of the facts of the Jewish Scriptures (our Old Testament),but they did not apply these principles in a personal way.You can be a walking Bible encyclopedia, with your head crammed full of biblicalknowledge, but it won't do you any good if you don't apply it practically in dailyliving. If you study the Word of God without applying it to your life, you are no betteroff than the Pharisees and Sadducees of Jesus' day. You really don't know theScriptures until you put them into practice.2. Studying the Word of God can be dangerous if you merely study it withoutapplying it. Bible study without application can be dangerous because knowledgepuffs up. The apostle Paul stated, 'Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up' (1 Cur.8:1). The Greek word translated 'puffs up' contains the idea of being inflated withpride that in turn leads to arrogance. The Bible tells us that the devil knows theWord intellectually (see his temptation of Jesus --- Matt. 4:1 -- 11), and we alsoknow that he is puffed up with pride and is arrogant. When you correctly apply theWord of God to your life, you eliminate the danger of being puffed up with pride.Bible study without application can be dangerous because knowledge requiresaction. What a man knows should find expression in what he does. James declared,'Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says'(James 1:22). God's commands are not optional. He doesn't say, 'Please won't youconsider doing this?' He commands, 'Do it!' And he expects us to obey.In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus compared an obedient disciple to a wiseman: 'Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them intopractice [action] is like a wise man who built his house on the rock' (Matt. 7:24).When the trials of life came along, the wise man's life stood firm while the foolishman's --- the one who did not practice what he knew --- came crashing down (Matt.7:25 -- 27). Also, King David was known as a man after God's own heart becausehe applied the Word to his life and practiced what he knew. The psalmist wrote, 'Ihave considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes. I will hastenand not delay to obey your commands' (Ps. 119:59 -- 60). You, too, need to put whatyou know into action.Bible study without application can be dangerous because knowledge increasesresponsibility. If you get serious about studying the Bible, you will be held moreaccountable than the average person, because with added knowledge comesadded responsibility. James wrote, 'Anyone, then, who knows the good he oughtto do and doesn't do it, sins' (James 4:17). With a deeper knowledge of the Scripturescomes a stronger judgment if you fail to apply them. When you start studyingthe Bible, God begins showing you areas of your life that need changing and callsyou to greater responsibility.

The Bible is a special book. So much wisdom! No other book contains prophesy that is fulfilled. I have read the Bible through four times. Bible Study Methods is not a book that you just read through like Purpose Driven Life, it is just what the title says, a list of methods that you can use to study people in the Bible, chapters, words topics or other subjects. It points you to other resources most of which are available on the internet now. If you will get this book and use it to dig into the Bible you will find deeper meaning. There is more under the hood than you thought. Do a study and I think you will find it very rewarding and humbling. One thing you might enjoy more is listening to someone else who has used the book tell about the studies they did.

You can be flexible when you use the methods. Sometimes it is hard to tell when the study of a word becomes the study of a topic or a theme. You can use methods from all three. There are lots of good Bible concordances, commentaries, and encyclopedia's on the internet so you might not use the exact one that is recommended in the book if you can't find it (or you could probably order it from Amazon!). You can find Strong's numbers for KJV and NASB on BibleHub. I would give this book 10 stars if I could. But to benefit from it you are going to have to commit hours of time over days and in some cases weeks. Some of the studies can be done in a few hours but others will take weeks. I recommend it highly. You will have to get in and drive it around, but it will blow your doors off!

I'm a Bible school student and had this text as one of two for a Bible Study Teaching Methods class. The book is an excellent resource for learning some basic methods of Bible study you can do on your own and then teach others to do as well.
The only complaint I have about this book is the binding (hence the 4 stars). It is so poor that the spine cracked and pages were falling out before I finished reading the 2nd chapter. I'm going to contact the publisher and see if they will send me another book. Until then, I'll have to use lots of tape to keep the pages in place!
Other than this, the book is excellent and would be a great addition to any Christian's library, but especially if you are a teacher of the Bible.

This book is very easy to read and understand. I found this book so helpful in my spiritual life that I gave it as gifts to four other people. It is informative and allows the reader to work at their pace. The author ask that you not move from one method until you have totally mastered it.

I also like the fact that Rick Warren explained various Bible translations and provided a list of tool to use during Bible Study. His explanation of each Bible study tool is so helpful. It is great that he provided a list of good commentaires and so forth to use. His explanations enabled me to purchase several good tools for my library and to know how to use them.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in studying God's word. I gave the book to a new minister, and two Church School teachers. They all found the book to be very helpful.

I have used this book for 20 years for personal study, for teaching "How to..." classes, and to use as study aid for others personal study. Most Bible study how to books are just a lot of reading. Warren gives just enough explanation and why bible study is important, but the give some of the most practical study methods for getting the most out of your time with God in His Word. I have used it so much that I now had a local company(FedEx) put a spiral binding on the book that makes it so much easier to use.

This is one book that I recommend to all Christians as one the ten books they MUST read. This book is helpful and presented humbly by a renowned teacher. He gives 12 ways to read and study your Bible and all of them work but one or two will really resonate with you and help you establish a rhythm of Bible study in your life. This isn't onerous to read, rather the opposite and you will find his manner conducive to making up your own mind.
