Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Margaret feels responsible when she and her autistic brother Artie (R-T) get lost in the woods. But when she discovers that Artie has kept secret from her the mysterious visits to their newly-discovered cave by a talking rat named Christopher, she is furious. Her plan to hold Christopher hostage in exchange for a rat escort home backfires; and the youngsters find themselves spending a glorious summer with the super-intelligent rats from NIMH, while learning about living off the land through their own resourcefulness. This fast-paced adventure fantasy revolves around the metamorphosis of overweight, unhappy Margaret. Though too many of the relationships among Conly's minor characters spark briefly only to fizzle out--demanding less emotional commitment than earlier installments in the Rats of NIMH saga--the novel proves enjoyable for its excitement and believably drawn characterizations of the children and their amazing rodent friends. Ages 9-12.

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-- Overweight and sullen, Margaret resents the way her family's life has to revolve around younger brother, Artie, who was left with the inability to speak following an illness in infancy. While on a camping trip, the two children become hopelessly lost, and are discovered by Christopher, one of the younger generation rats from Rasco and the Rats of NIMH (Harper, 1986). The children are accepted into the Thorn Valley community, and Margaret slowly discovers her own worth as she helps the rats accomplish major tasks that her size makes easy. Artie is treated with kindness and compassion, even though his clumsiness causes several disasters. With the approach of winter, the rats realize that they cannot provide the children with shelter against the cold, and the painful decision is made to return the children to their home and trust that they will be able to keep quiet about the rats' existence. This new adventure about the rats of NIMH does not disappoint. The characters are full and rich, and Margaret's change from an unhappy, unpleasant girl to one with strong self-esteem is gradual and believable. The plot is strong, and while the climax is quieter than in the previous books, it is heart-wrenching. The ending begs for a sequel, and so will readers. --Susan M. This story follows a logical progression of the lives of the main characters in the previous two books and ties two new characters into the overarching story line. A young girl and her brother find themselves maturing through the adventure they are thrust into. They discover self worth and purpose as their own character is developed. Again, for me, I love the Rats because of their resourcefulness, their creativity, their nobility, and their own ability to preserve the way of life they desire.

Cute kids story - my kids read it in elementary and loved it so we bought it for our early elementary age relative. It was read to him (he was a little to young to read it himself) and it kept his attention very well and he loved it too. Get this and the sequels - your kids will love them

My son loves the Rats of NIHM books.
Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2007
The first book, "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of N.I.M.H.", was excellent (yes, even better than the movie). The second book, "Racso and the Rats of N.I.M.H.", was a very good sequel - not as good as the first, but well in line with the spirit and quality of the original (and fortunately completely divorced from the poor second movie). This third book is average at best. It centers alternately on Racso and two human children. Although Racso is not an unappealing character, the significant focus on the humans in the book takes the story outside of what a N.I.M.H. fan like myself enjoys about the stories. I also found the ending to be depressing and predictable. Only recommended to die-hard N.I.M.H. fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another successful sequel in the Nimh series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 21, 2017
I loved this book which is a really enjoyable follow-up to both the classic Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, and its sequel Rasco and the Rats of Nimh. If possible, read the three books in order. If you like rats (we've got three pet rats) you will love immersing yourself in their special world. I wish our rats could talk to us!

I read the first book in the NIMH series when I was elementary school and loved it but didn't realize that there were two more books in the series until many years later. I did eventually get my hands on the second book but this the third book continued to eluded me until just a few weeks ago. This collection of books are among my all time favorite and definitely stand the test of time.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well done Rats of NIMH story
Reviewed in Canada on January 26, 2019
As a middle aged man who has watched the Secret of NIMH movie and read the original Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH book over and over probably dozens of times (I still have my original copy from middle school, back in the mid 80's) I purchased this book with a bit of trepidation. I don't know what I was worried about, but for some reason I just thought the book would let me down.

I needn't have worried. While not up to the original Rats of NIMH story it is still a good one. Not quite five stars good - I dinged it a star because it seems to have been "dumbed down" even from the RACSO story, and felt Nicodemus could have been more involved, especially toward the end of the story (won't give spoilers here). It's still a good book, though, and deserves a read from any NIMH fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everybody should read this book if they've read the two other books in this series before this one.

I bought Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH in 1970, so just had to buy the next two in the series. My Grandchildren so enjoyed me reading the books to them.

4.0 out of 5 stars which I really loved, however
Reviewed in Canada on November 9, 2015
It's a step down from the 2 previous books, which I really loved, however, it's still a decent read, and, as an adult, I'm also not the target audience. The author surprised me with a great sequel to her father's book, so maybe I fell victim to my own expectations for this one. She does continue to build characters we know from the series, and the friendship that blooms between Christopher and Artie is magic. I'd like to see another.
