Gail Carson Levine left her mark on fantasy with her well-loved Newbery Honor BookElla Enchanted. Now she has created another shimmering and tapestried landscape of fantasy and fairies.
The two princesses of Bamarre couldn't be more different. Princess Addie is fearful and shy. Her deepest wish is for safety. Princess Meryl is bold and brave. Her deepest wish is to save the kingdom of Bamarre. They are sisters, and they mean the world to each other.
Then disaster strikes, and Addie—terrified and unprepared—sets out on a perilous quest. In her path are monsters of Bamarre: ogres, specters, gryphons, and dragons.
Addie must battle them, but time is running out, and the sisters' lives—and Barmarre's fate—hang in the balance.
Once upon a time, there was a girl who wanted to be pretty...
Aza's singing is the fairest in all the land, and the most unusual. She can "throw" her voice so it seems to come from anywhere. But singing is only one of the two qualities prized in the Kingdom of Ayortha. Aza doesn't possess the other: beauty. Not even close. She's hidden in the shadows in her parents' inn, but when she becomes lady-in-waiting to the new queen, she has to step into the light—especially when the queen demands a dangerous favor. A magic mirror, a charming prince, a jealous queen, palace intrigue, and an injured king twine into a maze that Aza must penetrate to save herself and her beloved kingdom.
Falling in love is never easy, but falling in love with an immortal god while your days on earth are numbered is almost more than a young girl can bear.Newbery Honor author Gail Carson Levine has created a stunning new world of flawed gods, unbreakable vows, and ancient omens inEver.
Kezi knows her days are numbered. But accepting death is hard, especially when her romance with Olus is so new—Olus, the god of wind and loneliness.
Love brings Kezi the will to fight her fate. Love gives Olus the strength to confront his fears. Together—and apart—they encounter spiders with webs of iron, the cruel lord of the land of the dead, and the tests of the Akkan gods.
If they succeed, they will be together. If they fail, Olus will have to endure the ultimate loss—and Kezi will have to make the supreme sacrifice.

Perfect for preteens and early teens as well as nostalgic adults!
Even though my eleven-year-old sister is a tomboy and has hated princesses for most of her short life, she loved these books. They have just the right amount of action, suspense and sweetness for people of all ages and tastes to enjoy!
As a side note, the book Ella Enchanted is really very different from the movie and is far, far better and makes way more sense. The characters are much more lovable/hate-able and the story is gripping and pulls you right in.
Also, these are the kind of books that deserve to be read multiple times, and aloud to the family at least one of those times!
I am older (28) than the intended audience, but I have been trying to catch up on some novels to have around for my daughter to read when she's older. There is so much garbage out there for girls, but these books were so refreshing. Fun princess storylines, but the lead female characters were good-hearted and intelligent. What I also appreciated was that the male characters were admirable. They were not the "fixer-upper" boys Disney has been portraying recently. Good lessons taught and very entertaining.
Ella Enchanted and Fairest are my preferences of the three. They give a little creative twist on classic fairy tales and so had a familiarity to them, but were not at all predictable.
tales filled with warrior princesses who are still feminine while remaining strong. "Fairest" is one of my all-time
favorite stories, because it encourages the reader to develop their inner person and not rely on outer beauty to
judge her strength. I read this to my pre-teens a few years ago and they loved it. All the books in the set are appropriate for
pre-teen to 15 or 16 years old. I (as an adult) also found them extremely well-written and engaging.

I read Ella Enchanted when I lived in the States and fell in love with the witty and charming girl who won't give up and finds her own unique ways to deal with her problems. Although I was older than the intended audience it didn't feel too childish or one-dimensional.
Much later I discovered this collection and just had to buy it. I love Addie and Meryl. Being a sister myself I just couldn't stop reading. I liked the dragon and had to laugh at the Book of the Homely Truths. It just was a wonderful story for being stuck on a train or sitting outside in the sun.
To my surprise even my neighbour ( a 10 year old boy ) likes the stories. He loves to hear about the ogres and how the heroines escaped them. He likes the girls because they are as strong as boys. That actually made me laugh.

I am quite let down. The storyline is good, but the writing is more cumbersome than it needs to be. Chunky and awkward it is difficult reading. Way more difficult than it needs to be. I love reading aloud to my daughter and this was not a big winner for either of us.
And it doesn't have any of the campy fun feel of the film.
Might have felt differently if I hadn't seen the film, but I usually prefer the book. Not so in this case.
