At 60, we're meant to examine our lives, and think about mortality - which is what I've been doing, writes JOANNE HARRIS. This is the advice I'd give my younger self, if I could. Life is like a story with a beginning, a middle, an end. It is not always as structured or as ordered as a story might be, and some are longer than others, but the journey is ours in part to direct. We can choose the paths we take, the places in which to linger. We can choose the people we travel with, the ones we make a part of our lives. Choose wisely, I would tell my younger self; not everyone who seems friendly is a friend. True friends are not easy to come by; always cherish the ones you find. And bear in mind that the journey matters more than the destination.

Throughout the 20th century, the world's biggest powers inflicted horrific pain on their own citizens in the form of mass human experimentation. Less than 100 years ago Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, the Soviet Union and the United States were all conducting experiments, each with their own sick motivation. While the Nazis were working to advance their grotesque racial policies, Japan was testing the limits of human capability in their own death camps. As a continuation of such research, the US went on to launch a mind control programme that was only discovered decades later. The same can be said for another US study into syphilis, which still haunts marginalised communities. Furthermore, in the early days of the Cold War as fears mounted over atomic war, the Soviet Union conducted a terrifying test to establish how it could win on the battlefield in the event of nuclear strikes across Europe. To this day, the number of people who were killed in such experiments is unknown - and is likely to never be truly uncovered. Here, MailOnline looks at some of the most horrifying mass human experiments carried out in the 20th century.

The former Leeds Rhinos star's funeral is being held in a private service at Pontefract Crematorium. He passed away 'peacefully' aged 41 at hospital on June 2, five years after being diagnosed with the neurological condition. His close friend Kevin Sinfield was among the mourners gathering at the crematorium ahead of the service. He wore a black suit, white shirt, and black tie as he walked alongside his wife Jayne while clutching her hand. Crowds were seen lining along the route with many wearing rugby shirts bearing Burrow's name and number seven on the back. Others waved flags with his named lovingly adorned on the front as they waited to bid farewell to the hero.

Brad Pitt arrived to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday with his stunning girlfriend Ines de Ramon, as they joined the likes of Geri Horner, Gordon Ramsay and his daughter Holly at the racing event. The actor, 60, looked loved-up with the beauty, 34, as they commanded attention while walking around the paddock. A loud cheer went up. He has been this place's darling for two decades and 163,000 souls welcomed him home. 'Thanks guys,' squeaked an emotional Hamilton, his voice breaking. 'This means a lot to me. I love you guys.' His last win was in December 2021 – in Saudi Arabia, the race before his life turned upside down in Abu Dhabi, where he lost out so controversially to Max Verstappen – a day that that will live in infamy. Now this. A redemptive solace on the stage he has commanded like no other.

You might think the question 'Can you wear a wedge over 50?' requires only a simple yes or no answer. I've given the matter plenty of thought since, back in February, almost the entire front row of Chloe's Autumn/Winter 2024 catwalk show were wearing the label's high wedge, black leather open-toed sandals. Catherine Kassenoff, from Westchester in New York State, (seen inset with her family) traveled to Basel last May to end her life at the Pegasos Swiss Association. The 54-year-old lawyer claimed her husband, Alan, had been abusing her and their children for years, and that it led to her taking her own life amid their custody battle. Unlike Dignitas and Exit International, the two largest assisted suicide organizations in the country, Pegasos Swiss Association accepts applications for Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) from people who are not terminally ill. The clinic, which was established in August 2019, has a neat and unassuming white exterior, with wooden shutters (see image, left).

Social media sleuths have narrowed their search down to two members of the England squad after Trent Alexander-Arnold revealed that a team-mate 'didn't want to take a penalty' against Switzerland. The Liverpool star came off the bench in the second-half of extra-time to take a penalty during the shootout and scored the decisive spot-kick to send England into the semi-finals. Alexander-Arnold had been brought on by Gareth Southgate to take a penalty, a decision which paid dividends as he sent Yann Sommer the wrong way after Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Ivan Toney all scored.

Davina Moore said she believed her sister Sarah Smith and her husband Gary were spreading rumours that she was a paedophile and responded with a five-month campaign of harassment. Moore hurled a brick through the window of one of their cars and thrown lit firelighters into their garden as well as pestered them at their home in the South Devon village of Chudleigh Knighton. But her vendetta reached a peak on April 18 when Moore poured petrol onto her sister and brother-in-law's Mazda and Hyundai cars before setting them alight. The couple went out to try to douse the flames with a hosepipe but the fire brigade had to be called to finish the job and both cars were write-offs.

Salma Hayek brought some Hollywood glamour to SW19 on Sunday, as she was joined by her husband François-Henri Pinault in the Royal Box on day seven of Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The actress, 57, cut a sophisticated figure in a navy tweed blazer and a pair of matching trousers, as the couple made their way to their seats. Angela Rayner returned to Downing Street today as Britain's new Deputy Prime Minister continued her work after taking over a key Whitehall department. The 44-year-old was seen leaving No10 this morning after meeting with Sir Keir Starmer behind the famous black door for the third time in three days. Following Labour's general election victory, Ms Rayner was appointed both Deputy PM and Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. She is set to take the lead role in Labour's promised housebuilding blitz, following the party's general election pledge to build 1.5million new homes. Ms Rayner is expected to soon unveil a new ministerial office for her department in Manchester and split her time between there and London. It comes as Labour Boss es face up to the threat posed by Reform UK, who won five seats at the general election and also came second in scores of others. It has emerged how Sir Keir plans to portray Nigel Farage's party as part of a 'coalition of chaos' alongside the defeated Tories.

This is the scary moment a bo xing referee took a brutal punch to the face while trying to split up a fight between Keyshawn Davis and Miguel Madueno on Saturday night.
