Marseille remain favourites to signMason GreenwoodfromManchester Uniteddespite opposition to the deal in France.

The two clubs have agreed an initial fee of £27million plus £3.2m in add-ons and a significant sell-on clause after Marseille fended off competition from a number of European clubs led by Lazio.

However, a section of Marseille fans launched a #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign over allegations of attempted rape and assault against the 22-year-old player.

Greenwood has denied any wrongdoing and all charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service last year.

Marseille mayor Benoit Payan has also opposed the move, saying he would lobby the club’s president Pablo Longoria to call off the deal.

However, it’s understood that Marseille are still the front-runners to sign Greenwood who spent last season on loan at Getafe after it was decided that he had no future at United.

Lazio have not given up hope of hijacking the deal, particularly if Marseille have second thoughts over the protests.

Lazio president Claudio Lotito said: ‘I have offered €25m plus add-ons and 50 per cent sell-on clause to Man United for Mason Greenwood. Several clubs tried to enter the race just to disturb us and make the deal collapse – after Juventus, also Napoli did the same.’
