As the nation’s first public university, UNC-Chapel Hill is located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The university opened its doors to students over two centuries ago and the landmarks remain. The Davie Poplar is a large tulip poplar tree located in McCorkle Place is named after the school’s founder William Richardson Davie. Legend has it that if the Davie Poplar falls, the University will fall with it. The Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower’s chime can be heard from anywhere on campus. The 90-year-old tradition of the masterbell ringers are Carolina students who ring the bells on football game days and special occasions. The Tar Heels have school spirit and claim that they bleed Carolina blue. In 2016, the N.C. The General Assembly established the North Carolina Collaboratory to allow for research across the state to solve the state’s pressing challenges through stepping out of classroom walls. The Collaboratory conducts legislatively mandated research and addresses environmental, economic and public health issues. Noteworthy alumni include basketball hall of famer Michael Jordan, former U.S. senator John Edwards, two-time Olympic gold medalist Mia Hamm, and American actor Billy Crudup.
