Chris Dee is an award-winning playwright, entertainment consultant, and metafiction author who brings real life experience to her storyverse, fusing it with unimagined truth and depth.

She is a woman who has squatted down next to a 500-lb Bengal tiger and petted its fur. She has held an ocelot in her arms and allowed it to ‘groom’ her forearm. She has spent the night in a cabin with two rambunctious caracals. She studied art in Florence, Italy, worked in a museum and walked through its galleries after closing. She knows the difference between Picasso and Pissarro, Manet and Monet. She has been inside Cartier. She has been inside a corporate board room. She has been on a yacht and in a private plane.

You should do something like that." It's not a fan fiction issue. If you're a professional playwright, you will get those same prods to find a more lucrative medium. Novelist? You should be doing screenplays. Got a screenplay? Maybe a Netflix series would be better, those are big now. Smile, thank them for their interest, and remember that even if the advice is presumptuous, patronizing or just annoying, they mean well. Money is nice, you can buy things with it, and they're wishing you the freedom to walk the beach in Waikiki whenever you like and treat yourself to a good dinner after.(less)

(Last summer I was taking a class that had me revisiting Aristotle’sPoeticswith an attention I’d never paid in college, and a research binge on Robert Wittman/stolen art treasures.) This year, I thought I’d control the skid with William Goldman’sAdventures in the Screen Tradeand follow it up withWhich Lie did I Tell?OrFour Screenplays with Essays.

Research will probably be my old pal Stephen Birmingham’sLife at the Dakota.(Birmingham was a tremendous resource when I was working on the Wayne Family History.) If there’s any summer left,Free for All, Joe Pap, the Public and the Greatest Theater Story Ever Toldhas been on the bottom of the tsundoku for far too long.(less)

20 Years of Cat-Tales kicks off today on the anniversary of A Girl’s Gotta Protect Her Reputation #CatTalesIs20

20 years ago I postedA Girl’s Gotta Protect Her Reputationon a nascent fan fiction site, never dreaming it would become the first installment of a metafiction series that wold still be finding enthusiastic new readers 20 years later. Last year, of course, I did know, and just after the 19th anniversary passed, I was thinking about ways to make this year an event. After all, I had 12 months to pl

“(Love is the puzzle that) can’t be solved. Catlike, it follows no rules but its own, and only it knows what they are. Also it can change the rules any time it wants, in any way it wants, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.”
Chris Dee, Cat-Tales Book 5

“The principles of storytelling do not change. Going home. Coming of age. Sin and redemption. The hero. The journey, The power of love. They are hardwired into us, just like our taste buds process sweet, sour, bitter, and salt. Can a new voice come up with something startling and creative and unprecedented? Absolutely. Can they invent a fifth taste? No. No, they can’t. Can they make it so we don’t like sweet anymore? No, no they can’t.”
Chris Dee

“I am not a fan of the magical quick fix in any fiction, including fantasy, scifi and comic books. Unless Dr. Who is involved, and then only because we get to use the phrase 'Timey-wimey wibbliness' which, I'm sure you'll agree, there are not enough occasions to drop into ordinary adult conversation.”
Chris Dee

“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
Steve Jobs

“If you don't stick to your values when they're being tested, they're not values: they're hobbies.”
Jon Stewart

“If you feel that strongly about something, you have an obligation to try and change my mind.”
Aaron Sorkin

“We are not powerless. We have tremendous potential for good or ill. How we choose to use that power is up to us; but first we must choose to use it. We're told every day, You can't change the world. But the world is changing every day. Only question is who's doing it? You or somebody else?”
J. Michael Straczynski

“Our first computers were born not out of greed or ego, but in the revolutionary spirit of helping common people rise above the most powerful institutions.”
Steve Wozniak
