Then, and only then, watch the gorgeous, perfect interpretation (and under no circumstances any other version) that is the 2009 BBC mini-series starring Romola Garai. No one else has come close to portraying Emma as well as she did. Truly. But read it first. Austen was a genius!(less)

Even as someone who absolutely loves this book, I usually skip a couple of pages whenever Miss Bates starts talking, or someone starts to read a letter from someone else - you don't miss a thing. Also, it may not be your kind of book the first time you read it, but I'd strongly recommend trying to finish it - the ending is one of the most satisfying parts. Even if you didn't enjoy it on this reading, who knows - you may come back to it again! That's how I got into it.(less)
