A Year in the National Parks: The Greatest American Road Trip

Rate this book
The Greatest American Road Trip started on January 1, 2016 and ended on December 31, 2016. During that time, we road tripped in a 4X4 SUV with an Airstream trailer in tow to all 59 U.S. National Parks in 52 weeks—an average of one park per week. With parks located in Maine, the Caribbean, northern Alaska, in the heart of the Pacific Ocean and everywhere in between, it was an ambitious yet attainable goal. We plotted our route carefully and planned contingencies so that we could capture the best of every park in one calendar year. A Year in the National Parks: The Greatest American Road Trip will be a coffee table book showcasing our very best images from each of the 59 U.S. National Parks, shot while on assignment for National Geographic, as well as information about the depths of the American wilderness and our wild ride into it.

I am a creative professional and communications strategist supporting NASA human spaceflight at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. and based in Golden, Colorado.

When not telling the story of human exploration in space, I write about adventures on Earth—with articles and photographs appearing in The Travel Channel, blogs for The National Geographic Society, Thrillist, The Huffington Post, and The Lonely Planet.

In 2016, I took on “the Greatest American Road Trip,” exploring and documenting 59 of the U.S. National Parks over 52 weeks.

I have written multiple books on the subject of national parks. My newest next book, 'The National Park Journal', is available from your favorite booksellers here!

You’ll want to spend some time with this book. The photos are absolutely beautiful, so I dawdled over each page, savoring it all. This couple did an amazing job capturing the parks and sharing it with all of us. It’s certainly an inspiration to travel more, plus, they provide plenty of helpful, practical tips for planning your own adventures in the National Parks. Can’t wait to get out there!

Beautiful, awesome, inspiring, wonderfully curated are all ways I describe this tribute to the US National Parks. From the opening pages telling the history and story of our protected lands to the fascinating behind the scenes pages at the end and of course the stunning photographs of the 59 parks, this book makes the case for why we all need these protected spaces.
I was especially excited to finally receive my copy of this book since I followed The Greatest American Road Trip quite some time on their website and across social media. It was fun to finally hold something tangible in my hand. I've also enjoyed perusing it with my kids and discussing where we'd want to visit and why.

Great resource for roadtripping, and very inspirational journey. It's a bit hurried, one year is not remotely close to enough time to experience these immense areas, but it's a crazy goal and I'm happy to see they made it.

The book doesn't have specific information about areas inside the parks, only general info that gives you a sense of what each park is like, which is a solid starting point to start research from. Makes me wanna start a book that is "One Year at Every National Park" but then I'd be dead before finishing it.

A beautiful look at the US national parks, as seen through a couple that traveled to all of them in one year. The photos of each park give a glimpse of the unique character of the different regions in the United States, at different times of the year. It was difficult for me to choose a favorite park, but I have to give a hat tip to Yosemite national park, in California. It is currently closed indefinitely due to wildfire, and the photos of the park show a beautifully wooded area, with a baby bear peeking around a tree. I admire the skill of the photographers. The photos of the caves in Carlsbad Caverns and the icebergs in the Kenai Fjords are fantastic. I've tried photographing similar subjects but my photos can't even do the justice that these do.

I highly recommend having this book sitting on your coffee table for those times when you want to escape to nature but only have 10 minutes, and your imagination.

Gorgeous photography of all 59 of our national parks visited by the coauthors in 52 weeks with great accompanying content. Though intentional with the parks themselves as the spotlight, I would've enjoyed having more of their story woven throughout the narrative. Perhaps that could make a nice, future companion piece down the road.
