I’ve heard a bit about this series before and since the back-cover sounded interesting, I thought I would try this middle-grade fiction book. While I thought the actual plot fell a bit flat in the actual story, the idea was interesting. There was some content that I thought wasn’t needed for a younger read, though. I don’t think I’ll be continuing this series, but it was a fun idea.

This is the first in the South Seas Adventure series. This series is about the adventures of Abby Kendall, a young teenage girl, and her family and friends as they travel the South Seas in the late 1840s.

It's 1847, and when her parents announce that the family will be moving to Hawaii to help her sick uncle on his ranch, thirteen-year-old Abby Kendall is devastated. She doesn't want to leave her home, or her friends, particularly her best friend, Luke. An orphan who lives with his cruel aunt, Luke is like one of the family, but his aunt refuses to let him move to Hawaii with the Kendalls. Abby boards a ship for the sea voyage to Hawaii with her family, not knowing that Luke has run away from his aunt and stowed away on board. Abby is determined to keep him hidden until it's too late to turn back. But she doesn't expect that she and Luke will be swept overboard in a terrible storm, and left lost at sea in a tiny boat. It will take all of their courage and determination to find their way back to Abby's family, as they face many dangers along the way.

I loved this first book in the South Seas Adventures series. I really enjoyed the unique historical setting, and Abby was a great character. The book was well-written and exciting, and I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series to find out what adventures are in store for Abby and Luke next.

This was over all a good book. I would recommend your reader be at least 12-13 years old to read it. The references to God and the way they rely on him is good to see in a book.

Over all, I’m concerned with the following in the book:
1. Abby sneaks out early in the morning to take food and water to Luke and the two 13 year olds hang out under the Tarp of an emergency boat alone. Nothing happens, I would not want my child thinking that hanging out with a boy the same age alone ok.
2. There is a part where Luke and Abby witness a sailor bar fight.

I also agree with Lindsay’s review, so go read hers!

See my reviews for the other books in the Abby: South Seas Adventures. There are 8 in total, I have now read 4, and I highly recommend for the 8- to 13-year-old age group. There is lots of action, lots of faith, lots of learning, about sailing, life in the mid1800s, the Sandwich Islands, and more. In the back of each novel is a list of sailing terms and another one of Hawaiian terms and expression. There is also a map of where each novel's adventures take place. In another words, this is a fun way to learn.

I picked it up at a Christian bookstore for lack of anything better to read, but it turned out to be an extremely enjoyable and exciting read. Abby and Luke's adventures provide non-stop action, and the descriptions of their plights are so vivid that you could almost imagine you're there with them, smelling the salty air of the sea and trying to avoid numerous threats. And who can resist pirates, stowaways and treasure hunting?

Read this when I was 16, as a recommendation from a friend. It's positively adorable! It appeals to the young girl since Abby is a likable heroine whose platonically best friends with a mature, yet fun boy! It's funny, nail biting and full of adventure. I recommended it to my little sister who didn't like reading and she loooooved it:) Great to kick start girls into loving books!
