Coven Cove#1

The Secret of the Blood Charm

Rate this book
Larissa is a child of three worlds. She is a witch, a human, and a vampire…

Witches fear her…
She is in love with a forbidden human…
And Vampires want her blood.

A dark figure murdered Larissa Norton’s father before coming after her and her mother. To save Larissa, her mother placed her on a train, where she fell asleep and later woke up alone… and very confused. See, vampires don’t sleep.

That train delivered her to the safety of a coven where witches, vampires, werewolves, and shapeshifters live and learn together. She discovered the coven was more than it appeared, much more. It was a school full of orphans like her. All needing to learn how to hone their abilities and live in the world of humans.

In the coven, Larissa found a feeling of belonging and comfort, especially in the forbidden fruit of a witch’s mortal son.

What the coven found in Larissa was more than they bargained for. Larissa was a child of three worlds, with a past that she couldn’t remember, which was more complicated and darker than any of them could imagine. Worst of all, someone was out for her blood, literally, and though the adults vowed to protect her, no one knew who or what the threat really was, yet.

Welcome to Coven Cove, a new world created by international best-selling paranormal author David Clark.

Larissa is thrown into a world she had no idea even existed until it was right in front of her. Larissa knew she was a vampire but that is where it ended for her. She lived with her parents and was home schooled until a dark entity chased them down. To protect her, her mother put her onto a train where she slept, which was unheard of for vampires, and Larissa's life will change for ever from that point on.
"Lightening crashed, and rain pelted down on my head with the impact of an avalanche of boulders on my already crushed soul...." I was instantly pulled into the story from the moment I opened it and read this. You are taken on the journey Larissa must go on from this point to find out who is after her and why. This story runs very smoothly and the characters are a great combination. This is written for middle years to young adult but can be enjoyed by all. David is a great story teller and I look forward to reading this new series.

wow

I am pleasantly surprised! I really enjoyed this book and the path H is taking. She’s learning about who she really is and book 2 is going to show us so much more. More battles and hopefully a relationship I see forming.

This was a very difficult book to get through. I kept reading with hopes it would get better, but half the story takes place in the main character's head, where all she dwells on is how confused about the world she is. The narrative would pick up pace a bit, and then it would crash to a dull, monotonous crawl. First, we would go in her memory, then spend time with her peers, then back in her memory, then time with her peers. The story had a good hook, and the big question behind what was chasing her is introduced, but then halfway through the book we learn a new crazy mystery about the main character that should have been introduced at the beginning. What happened to the first mystery?
About 60% of the way through, we get our first solid glimpse of what happens in a class, which again should have been closer to the beginning. All while we are following the character's thoughts, there's also the forbidden love interest mixed in there. I think this book just had too many plotlines going on. Anticlimactic would be a good way to describe it.
It might be a good vampire starter book for teens who are trying out the genre, but overall, it wasn't a top pick.

The Secret of the Blood Charm, the first novel in the Coven Cove series is a great start to what will surely be a fantastic series. Running from the monster that killed her husband, Marie Norton puts Larissa on a train, sending her to Coven Cove, a school and sanctuary for orphaned witches, vampires, werewolves and shapeshifters. Arriving at the school, Larissa finds herself out of sorts. She is…. breathing. She really shouldn’t be as she is a vampire and so much more. What Larissa Norton or is it Dubois will discover in this hidden school will surprise her and those who are trying to keep her safe. David Clark has done it again. With great characters, a fantastic storyline, wonderful descriptions, and non-stop action, this paranormal thriller opens a whole new exciting world. Welcome to Coven Cove, and hold on for what will surely be a rollercoaster ride. I am looking forward to the next installment in this series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Just the kind of thing I like. Harry Potter with Vampires. And a very nasty Vampire enemy. I admit to having trouble keeping track, visually in my head with the building that seemingly changes form continually, but other than that it's like any high school, with those who are alike cliquing together and one school star - in her own head that is, having her nose put out by the new girl who has more mystery and danger surrounding her than she can cope with - and snagging the school heartthrob too! Poor Larissa, her life gets much more complicated by the day. i did get very much into the characters written by David Clark, and was disappointed when the book came to an end. I'm very much looking forward to reading what happens next in book 2!

This is a great introduction to the series involving Larissa, a vampire without memories of before she was turned. The story opens with the death of her father and running from the man who killed him with her mother. After her mother puts her on a train, she wakes up to a place she has never been before, meeting a woman she doesn't know and the story takes off quickly from there. Great character development and world building and includes witches, werewolves, shifters and vampires at an academy setting. I am looking forward to the second book in the series and more of the secrets, intrigue, nefarious plans and craftiness of the characters. If you enjoy paranormal stories or academy stories or both I think you'll enjoy this book. Happy reading!

Larissa is a vampire, and is hounded by something after it murders her parents. Her mother has put her on a train that takes her to a unique school where special students live. Unfortunately all is not what it seemed and the people she believed were her parents were part of the sect that killed her own parents. She is unique in as much that she is witch and vampire. The sect want her for her powers and the whole school are needed to defend her. The only human there is bitten by a vampire during the attack and it is unclear if he will survive, despite Larissa’s efforts. How is the future going to progress.

Larissa is a Vampire. On the run with her mom and this book starts, having just seen her father killed. Through a series of events over the next few hours, she finds herself asleep, awake, human, and at a 'school' for supernatural orphans.

The human thing 'wears off' and that's when it starts getting even weirder. Visions, dreams, mysterious 'thing' hunting her, her real origins, and a boy. There's always a boy.:)

This book has it all, witches, vampires, werewolves, and shapeshifters (not the same as a werewolf, promise). A lot of secrets are being revealed and not a lot of time to learn how to be all Larissa is.

The reviews for this are very good so even though I struggled early on I continued. I found it slow going for the first 70% or so. But I stuck with it and while I wasn’t blown away I was interested enough to probably move onto the next one.

It starts well with Larissa running with her mother from whatever has just killed her father. She’s put on a train and wakes up without her mother and only the conductor. I was intrigued but found it struggled to hold my attention. It picks up around the 70% mark.
I’m hoping that now all the introductions have been made and the scene set the next book will hit the ground running.

This was a fun book. I like the prospect they’ve set up here with vampires and witches. The FMC is a *little* annoying but she is forever a teenager so even though she’s a vampire those hormones and brain synapses don’t change a whole heck of a lot lol. So I had to readjust my view point to that of being a teen or a young 20 something. This book has a fun magic system and supernatural hierarchy in a way. Nothing is what it seems in this story and the truth is very well hidden. The end fight was something else as well and I am wondering if something happened that wasn’t disclosed in this book lol I suppose I’ll find out in book 2.

when i started this book, due to its action in the beginning i was not sure i would finish it,
it drew me in and i thoroughly enjoyed the romp,
its main character is at first a somewhat dizzy dame vampire teen and the situation that she finds herself in somewhat intriguing. though we do end up with a typical school circumstances of who's the queen bee etc, handsome hunks etc,
i will not say more but to state i have bought the e-box set of the remaining six novels with the hope that the standard does not falter.
a lot of ingenious ideas make this worth reading.

This is a brilliant read.

A very unusual book but very interesting. Larissa lands in an orphanage for children who have lost their parents. What is different is that the children have different supernatural forms. Larissa turns out to be part vampire and witch. Being new and with different talents makes her stand out. However, it turns out that someone is hunting her and the coven that houses the school is in danger. A long read but the time passed bye rapidly while reading.

Although it’s a Young Adult-novel, and I’m no young adult, I really liked The Secret of the Blood Charm, the first book in the Coven Cove series. The suspense and action pull the reader in from page one. The story is well written, has believable and multi-dimensional characters, and is hugely entertaining.
I received a preview copy of this book which I am voluntarily reviewing.

Entertaining Read

Larissa died a couple of times, but she is still a vampire. However, she finds that she has magic, the magic of a witch. How can this be? There has never been a vampire-witch before and powerful beings will kill to get her power. I like the action, humor, and romance. I look forward to the next book.

So little backstory I hardly know what's going on. I don't want to work this hard to read a book. I don't know her age, how she became a vampire, how long she's been a vampire, why she needs to learn how to fit in (since I believe she's lived her whole life among humans), etc. I can only read so long without any context.

Confusion

Larissa is a 16 year old vampire. Her father was just killed in front of her and her mother. They run and hide from the people. Her mother gives her a vial to drink and gets her onto a train.
Next thing Larissa knows some woman is getting her off the train and taking her to a school for paranormal orphans. Now comes the hard part. Good Read.

Larissa is unusual

Larissa is being chased by something. It has killed her father and is chasing her and her mother. Next thing she knows she is on a train and on her way to who knows where. Life takes a very different turn and Larissa is in shock. I am very much interested to read more.

Enjoyable read

This is the first book of a new series by an author I’ve not read before. Great start with likable characters, nice story building and well paced. Not totally original but not overly predictable either so I will definitely be reading the next book.
