On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They're going to die today. Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they're both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There's an app for that. Through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure--to live a lifetime in a single day.

The First to Die at the End

Adam Silvera revisits the world of Death-Cast 7 years before the events ofThey Both Die at the Endin this story about the lasting impact that people have on each other.

It's the night before Death-Cast goes live, and there's one question on everyone's mind: Can Death-Cast actually predict when someone will die, or is it just an elaborate hoax? Orion Pagan has waited years for someone to tell him that he's going to die, but Valentino Prince only just registered for Death-Cast, prompted in part because his twin sister nearly died.

When the first round of End Day calls goes out their lives are forever changed--and, through one unforgettable day together, they learn how life is always worth living to the fullest.

something i love about Adam’s books is that they curl up inside you and are the only thing you think about but it then rips your heart out in the most beautiful way possible. i love Adam, he’s such a clever artist and these books are books i will NEVER shut up about. if you asked me if you should read this book, my biased opinion would say absolutely, it’s completely worth it. but logically i think you should try it out and see if you like it, i understand it isn’t everyone’s type of book but its definitely worth trying to read.

**SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT:**

i LOVED the parallels in these books and how the the main characters in tbdate could have met earlier because of the context in tftdate. i think that is ABSOLUTELY GENUS HELLO? AND HOW THESE BOOKS FEEL SO FRESH AND DIFFERENT FROM EACHOTHER? THEY DONT FEEL LIKE THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN OMG? and the QUOTES FROM THIS BOOK. and how gracefully they both died? and how it tore me apart limb from limb, absolutely loved it

my favorite quotes from they both die at the end:
“...stories can make someone immortal as long as someone else is willing to listen.”

“Maybe it's better to have gotten it right and been happy for one day instead of living a lifetime of wrongs. “

“I've spent years living safely to secure a longer life, and look where that's gotten me. I'm at the finish line but I never ran the race.”

“I kiss the guy who brought me to life on the day we’re going to die.”

“I cannot tell you how you will survive without me. I cannot tell you how to mourn me. I cannot convince you to not feel guilty if you forget the anniversary of my death, or if you realize days or weeks or months have gone by without thinking about me. I just want you to live.”

my favorite quotes from the first to die at the end:

“Here's the truth no one ever wants to admit when death is on the horizon, or when you're deep in that grief—as long as you keep existing, you'll keep breathing, and if you're breathing, one day you'll start living again.”

“It’s not fair how someone can do everything right and still be hurt because someone else does one thing wrong.”

“I write short stories because I am one.
I wish I was a novel.
Breaths away from midnight, I know my final chapter is close.
I look up at Valentino, wondering what life could’ve offered if I had more pages in me.”

“Life doesn't care how young you are. It forces you to grow up anyway.”

This book kept me interested from the front to back cover, so overall, this book was very enjoyable.

I read this book, They Both Die at the End, by Adam Silvera, because of my school's summer reading assignment, and it ended up being very interesting. I enjoyed this book so much that I would consider reading other books from the author. Silvera used a very solemn, yet hopeful mood to create the relationship between Mateo and Rufus. On their end day, even though they were strangers, they built a trust and bond like no other. This book illustrates a central theme of acceptance; both Mateo and Rufus knew what the future held for them. Something important in the text was the climax, Mateo dying. This allowed Rufus to seek closure from Mateo's father in the hospital.

I believe all high school students should read this book at least once because it contains a great plot and storyline, highlighting reflection on one's life.

The author had no right to make these books so sad.
The characters made me fall in love with them and I could not put these books down. I refused to stop following them around the city and when the ending came, I actually cried. My heart burned for these boys.

I love how I began to rethink my own life and the decisions I’ve made. If this life of mine were to be worth it I must make sure that I am okay that when it comes to an end I happy with the life I lived.

These are officially my new favorite young adult LGBTQ books. The first one is definitely my favorite, but both tell a beautifully hearty breaking story about love formed in 24 hours.
This book made me reconsider how I live my life, and I now strive to live a fulfilling life.
