I started this novel with some skepticism but ended up enjoying it! Mumtaz Mahal's daughter Jehanara watches her die in childbirth, and then watches the Taj Mahal rise in her honor, even as Jehenara herself strives to become the woman that would make her mother proud. It is richly crafted. It's that immersive historical fiction we're all looking for. The romance is sigh-worthy and lovely.

Excellent story about the love of a Muslim princess and her soul mate and the dysfunction in the royal family. The building of the Taj Mahal is part of the setting of the book, but I wouldn't say that this book is about the construction project.

I'm about half way through and got bogged down. I think I will finish it, but I just couldn't stay excited about what was happening.
Now I'm finished and for a first book it was pretty good. ...more
