I started this novel with some skepticism but ended up enjoying it! Mumtaz Mahal's daughter Jehanara watches her die in childbirth, and then watches the Taj Mahal rise in her honor, even as Jehenara herself strives to become the woman that would make her mother proud. Excellent story about the love of a Muslim princess and her soul mate and the dysfunction in the royal family. The building of the Taj Mahal is part of the setting of the book, but I wouldn't say that this book is about the construction project.

We read this book for my real life book club author teleconference and I will update this review after we speak to John Shors. I love it that Mr. Shors has done over 3000 teleconferences with book clubs in the past 11 years in order to promote his book.

This is such a remarkable love story. Jahanara endures horrible tragedy and yet she learns to focus on what good there still can be and she learns to understand that the hardships are a part of her as well.

I maybe cried through almost the entire thing.

I'm about half way through and got bogged down. I think I will finish it, but I just couldn't stay excited about what was happening.
Now I'm finished and for a first book it was pretty good.

Historical fiction, light on the history, heavy on the romance. Phillipa Gregory rather than Alison Weir. Book club loved it, though. I had higher expectations, I guess.
