If you read the goodreads reviews on this one you'll see people talking about subtle plot and complex, "real" characters and how if this is not your thing then you'll hate this book. Thing is, that's exactly my thing, but I still didn't like it. It's true this is a character-driven book and the characters are drawn well enough to satisfy the genre. I really didn't think much of this book. One reviewer called it "literary fiction for little tykes" and I think that's a pretty apt description. But the story that focuses on a small group of friends over a summer just didn't do anything for me. I didn't think that any one character was really explored and even though I don't need things to "happen" in books to make it good, this just didn't have the other needed features to save it. This book is simply awesome. There are so many pieces that you pick up, with no seeming resemblance to anything and then at the end, it all fits together perfectly!
