We (all 8) went to Catholic school with the habit wearing nuns. And glad I did. Good education, and an introduction into theology and spirituality. In my mid-forties and after exploring other religions and spiritual practices I decided Catholicism wasn't for me. All that said, I found this novel most interesting and a good thriller. Some Catholics condemn it, thinking it's anti-Catholic but I disagree. The rituals, the hierarchy, the squabbles and various points of views, the egos - truly exists. And why? Priests are human. I've met lousy priests and nuns and truly devoted, kind ones. When I wrote my first novel, The Skye in June, it too is about The Church and what happens when one thinks differently from the teachings. Unfortunately, when in a religious household thinking and needing a spiritual path differently can create friction and one can become ostracized from that family and community. A surprise ending, one that I had to read a couple of times because it just didn't seem clear at first read. My first read of this author and not my last....more

A young woman driving a Shelby Mustang - I didn't know what type of Mustang that is and couldn't go on reading until I researched it. By then I wanted more about where Addy, the protagonist, was off to in this cherry-red car and what she'd get herself into zooming around town. Well, first few pages the reader is right into Addy's troubles with Hindy (her Mustang's name).
I enjoyed the book because it's different from my usual reads with its new and ever-changing world's technology focus. Addy is a patten attorney and an engineer. She understands the world and what will be needed - soon - for us to survive. And I liked Addy. She's smart and with it. She's "girl power!' - independent young woman who's into helping the environment. Tough enough to survive the legal world. Addy's had her share of life challenges. Adopted from Vietnam to an American couple she didn't live the dream life one hopes for. The story gives her background a bit and shows Addy's positive attitude and challenges without being," She's so strong and lonely, nobody gets her "kind of story. She's as modern as the story's technology and she's also idealistic. Where will this get her?
To strengthen her place in predominately male law firm and be the kind of partner she aspires to be she has to play the game. To prove herself she's sent off to Asia for a new technology convention. There she meets a rather mysterious man, Quinn, who almost stalks her at first to get her attention to his new invention. He wants her to represent him as his legal counselor. His invention will shake the world and in there lies the challenges. Addy and Quinn are followed, chased and threatened. The fear of losing the invention has them running for life and time to get a patten. Invention stealing is not new but this story is in the modern world of new inventions making it feel as though, this is for real. The race to patten Quinn's invention before it's stolen or destroyed sets Addy on a big adventure! As said, she's idealistic and cares about the environment and life on planet Earth.
It truly is a good thriller with believable characters and dialogue - three A+ for my reading interests. I recommend it.

There are other books on psychic self-defense, a much needed awareness how powerful that can be, but none I've read include each astrological signs as does Y.S. Yacoubian's latest book. It is a fascinating read about each astrological sign, the good, the bad, the shadows of. I keep going back to it to re-read about others, especially people have had a bit of issues with. But more so, understanding the shadow aspect of myself has me most interested. Then again, that "group" influence and energy that each sign possess. It is chalked though with helpful information to the study of others. I do say, as much as I don't like knowing how I possibly can be, truth is there. All in all, I'll be reading this book for years to come. For all interested in astrology I highly recommend this book....more

I started it after a visit and read to the wee hours of the morning. I just couldn't put it down. Ms. Oates lays it out with facts, and photos in an enjoyable reading way. She's done an excellent job that entices the reader to take a step back in time and enjoy the many characters' stories that lived in this unique place. The photos are in black and white depicting photography of the eras. But if you visit the richness of color, deep dark wood, lively colored antiques, soft lighting - all brings the sparkle of life then alive! I hope anyone reading this will be in preparation to visit Pacifica's historical castle - the home to many different residents. Is it haunting by some of them? Visit and you will experience if that is a possibility....more

I couldn't put the book down - and then what? Now what? Why? Unique storyline, unforgettable and relatable characters - known a few people like them. Sad how there are children right now being abused with no one to save them. Giving that data in the book has readers realize the sad state CPS is in. I truly "felt" the main character Hardly's heartfelt attempt to save the children's lives. The ending: wow! A mind blowing, unexpected end. I was surprised and disappointed although still, this story is a captivating one. Will read another of this author....more

I truly appreciated how Venturoni weaves interesting and often funny tales around history in these areas; some I've visited, some not yet. The first story in the several to come, takes place at Woodside General Store, a place I had visited in the early 1970s. I had forgotten about that visit but then remembered I had a photo sitting on the bench in front of it. Circle Star, now that's a story to a music venue where I've seen some greats like Diana Ross, Tina Turner. And so many other sites with really good fictional stories weaved into historical lores and facts. Enjoy those who know about these places and those who are being introduced to them. This story is riveting. An insight to women who live on the "wild side of life" that the majority don't know or think about. An insightful read to how abuse of a child into young adult whether that be mental - words, - physical or all, can shape a person to live up to the negative views of the abuser. Yes, some rise above it, but it is damaging. I championed the protagonist throughout the story relating to this kind of abusive parenting and how hard it is to break the cycle....more

He threw a different character we most likely won't see again - maybe - an empath which neither Renee Ballard nor Bosch want her "insights." All in all, and I have every Bosch book, I thoroughly enjoyed Desert Star, which I'll take out time to time and reread just for the pleasure of reading a talented writer. By the way, Harry and I are the same age so I think he should continue on regardless of sore knee and other ails. Don't retire him fully yet, MC....more

Get over the psychopathic woman your former wife - Angie. To me, their relationship was over the top throughout the story (although that was the story) - Will is one sick dude and Sara, his now lover, waawaaa, girlfriend, move on. Started out with a promise, became complexed, then scattered throughout with characters' viewpoints, life "issues" etc. Disappointed in this book by a previously enjoyed author. Guess you can't win them all and maybe Angie will decide that too and leave poor suffering Will alone. I do not recommend this...more

Michael Connelly's latest novel, The Dark Hours kept my happy reading in the cold holiday time. At first, like many Bosch fans, I had a difficult time adjusting around the latest main character, this one being Renee Ballard. She's proving to be a chip off the old mentor (Bosch) block and maturing nicely as a honorable, fierce detective. I like that Harry B is involved with her cases. All in all, change happens in life, like it or not (some HB fans don't), and Connelly is moving along with those changes. Still a happy Bosch/Connelly fan.
P.S. My husband was a bit upset I read right through it - you're done with your Christmas gift already? Sorry, couldn't help myself. It's so intensely thrilling....more

Venturoni weaves colorful stories around San Francisco and near-by locations, some which have history back-up and parts of the fiction are the author's tales. I re-read a couple of stories twice just in case a detail or so was missed. Now I'm ready to head out to some areas and see what Venturoni saw. Recommend this book and I really liked this author's other book too....more
