There were no real world shaking threats like we’re use to. It actually got unexpectedly down to earth and a bit sentimental with all the lessons on aging gracefully. I enjoyed it. Was definitely a throwback to the earlier series. Was nice to have Percy narrating again after all this time. I just wish it were a bit more. Shortest book in any of the series, I think....more

Notably more brutal and graphic than modern King novels, this book seemed to have a bit of a personal touch with the fictional author and his pen name personified. Not my favorite King book, but still a good read. As always, I place King into the paranormal category more then horror, which is what he's often credited for. 3.5 star...more

I found the humor in this rather juvenile, which is not a complaint. It is a middle grade novel. And I felt the humor was on that level. This is not a bad thing. On the other hand, I felt the story was incredibly heavy and violent. It is completely focused on oppression during the time of war. To me, the humor and the subject matter seemed unbalanced. One too light, the other too heavy. Perhaps together they were meant to balance? But it felt a little off to me. Side note, these children don't listen to a thing anyone tells them. "Watch your siblings" was ignored about 8 times in this book, all with EXTREME consequences that none of them ever seemed to learn from. Unsure if I will continue the series or not. I picked this one up for a reading challenge....more

The ‘mystery’ wasn’t so much of a mystery, as there was only one suspect and he did it. I kept waiting for a plot twist, or another suspect to be added, but it never happened. The part that carries the book is the main character, police Chief Balzic. He’s a very realistic feeling character. It’s easy to step into his shoes and really get into the story through his eyes. The end kind of got a bit confusing and needlessly complicated after the ‘mystery’ was concluded, but all together I’m glad I read it....more

I… really enjoyed it. I like the different takes on the gods. Ares is depicted in such a different way then I’m used to seeing him. And Apollo ❤️. He’s such a sweet boy in this book.
I wish we saw more of the 3rd Royal sibling, as the other two we got to know very well. Hopefully he’ll pop up more in the next three books.
I was not planning on continuing this series when I started this book, but that has changed. I’m all in now....more

I do recommend it to anyone who read the other series, definitely worth the time, but it lacked a lot of the shenanigans and charisma the previous books in this universe have. It was super dramatic and emo, which to be fair, it is a Nico book... but with the story being told 3rd person, I was hoping it would allow for more jokes and light heartedness than there actually was.
I also felt this was the first Riordan book to get a bit preachy. He has always been very good at representation without it feeling preachy, but this book went a bit beyond what has always felt like good and normalized representation to being preachy, which from my experience doesn't ever change anyone's options and just makes those who agree with your views cringe. I did love the seeing boys and their interactions with each other (when Nico wasn't being a dramatic, whiney B). The preachiness was minimal, but very obviously there in the scenes with Epiales and Menoetes.
All that aside, I do recommend the book to PJ fans, I was just left wanting something different than what this was. I wanted a quest with shenanigans and a big fight with huge stakes, but instead I got an emo drag through the underworld in a quest to find oneself....more

Probably more of a 2.5 for me. I felt this book kind of dragged. Not much was going on for a large chunk of it. It wasn’t quite cozy, but it also wasn’t exciting or adventurous. What seemed like the main story line that was somewhat slowly slightly building ended up being ignored for use in a sequel. The characters were all kind of bland and samey feeling. The outcome with the Queen was just… So rushed and and unbelievable. Overall just not a series for me to continue....more

Every chapter it was said “Colin is not one to lose his temper”, and then he loses his temper. I think he was VERY much one to lose his temper. Penelope was still a very kind, sweet character, but I couldn’t stand Colin. There was more than one time when he got so angry that he physically hurt Penelope. His mood swings and attitude were just too much for me....more

I do think I made a mistake in picking up the audio instead of reading it. I think that something about the audio in the fairy tale writing style dulled the tale. I found my mind drifting off, having a hard time just focusing on the reading. I have**spoiler alert** I feel bad giving this such a low rating. I have been a Critical Role fan since campaign one first aired on Geek and Sundry. I have grown to love these characters very much, so maybe this book had that against it from the start. It is difficult reading other's characters written by someone else. I had never read anything by the author before, but I went in with the expectations I have towards anything Critical Role related. Sadly I was rather disappointed.
I first tried reading this and could not get through the novel. I attempted again with the audio, excited for Robbie, Liam and Laura to make the story more exciting for me, and I'm, truly sad to say they were the only thing that got me through. It isn't that it was so much a bad story as it was just boring for me. I didn't get attached to any of the characters that I didn't already know going into the book, and nothing new was presented for the characters I already knew and cared about. There weren't really ay twists and turns, and the writing itself was just a bit mediocre to me.
I don't think there was anything here to attract people outside of the Critical Role fandom, and I'm not sure there was enough to make those already in the fandom excited. Perhaps my expectations were set too high going in, which might have gave an unfair judgment to this book, but I'm use to Matt Mercer level plots when involving these characters....more

I wish the character of Nemo was explored a bit more thoroughly, as when the books closes, he’s almost as much of a mystery as when it starts. There are serval character traits that come to light for sure, but his motives are still rather vague. It’s obvious he lost his family somehow, but the amount of scorn the man has towards humanity… I would like to have known a bit more about his past.
The narrator is quite pleasant and I throughly enjoyed his two companions....more
