This was originally supposed to I was given an arc of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. Perfect like everything Ariana writes! This was originally supposed to be published along with other short stories by some different authors, but it got cancelled for undisclosed reasons. So just be aware that the book is shorter and more fast paced than normal for Ariana’s books if you are like me and never check the page count of the book you’re reading. I’m not a big fan of short books especially if it’s romance (but I’m happily going to read everything Ariana publish) because you don’t really get to know the characters and there isn’t that much time to build an engaging set up, plus the romance feels hurried. You will have to be a really skilled writer to be able to pull of writing a romance in only 90 pages. But that is exactly what Ariana is. A skilled writer. She pulled this off perfectly, keeping me hooked and wondering what was going to happen throughout the novella. The fist pages is enough to keep you reading to the end. And reading this was like reading any of her other books. The writing never felt hurried or like the story got to long and needed to get cut down. Everything was paced perfectly and nothing felt forced. Although the romance was very fast paced it was not something that bothered me overly much, since I don’t believe Ariana could have done a better job with the 90 pages she was given. ...more |

Although I have to say that the execution was a bit underwhelming at times. I feel like the author put to much time in the wrong places and it was really bothersome that it was so unevenly paced. We get panels upon panels of conversation between the characters, where they explain their past and other information. I had no problem with reading that, it was interesting to follow. But the problem comes when you sacrifice other parts of the story to make it so. The battle scenes for example was over in only a few panels, making it hard to follow. This story liked to tell instead of show and I found that a bit disappointing. ...more |

I feel like this book contained more random and ‘you need to know science to understand this’ questions. The first book had an even amount of questions I found interesting and not interesting. But unfortunately this book almost only contained questions I didn’t find interesting. Although I like how they didn’t continue to leave the ‘weird and worrying’ questions unanswered like they did in the first book. So many of those questions in the first book were questions that sounded interesting but that for some reason were put to the side. We finally find out what Adam truly are, and let me tell you I had no idea it was going to be THAT! Victor and Zee finally seems to accept that they got feelings for each other! And Adam finally opens up about the prophecy! “You don’t belong here, you belong with us, blah blah. Don’t leave. Emotional shit.” He folded his arms, and added one more dry, “Blah.” Reynard almost smiled. “Your compassion is sincerely heartwarming, demon.” Zee showed him his middle finger. They were so into each other. For each book we get to know the characters more and after this book I feel like there isn’t much left before all the secrets are revealed. Still I can’t wait to find out more about Adam’s past and the curse. “How could all this make anyone grumpy?” He swept his hands down himself as we ambled toward the car. “I am a fucking ray of sunshine.” “He’s allergic to sunlight.” “Oh. Fuck. I forgot.” This book was definitely better than the last one because now I really feel like the plot is progressing. You can feel things building up and getting reviled/resolved in preparation for the end. We also (finally!) get some MMM smut! “He messed up the carpet by dying on it? This was everything the blurb promised, short fantasy, sci-fi and horror stories written from the perspective of mostly queer women. I enjoyed this book a lot and can definitely say that I have never read anything like it before. The stories never failed to surprise me and I always found myself thinking how incredible and new thinking it all was. Every short story was unique in its own way with different world building and characters. Sometimes you were in the dark about what happened and had to do your best to follow what was happening, and sometimes you got things explained to you well enough that you understood what was going on. If I only had to use one word to describe this I’d use ‘bizarre’. Bizarre both in a positive and negative way, because some of these stories were truly amazing and filled to the brim with things my brain would never conjure up. But some of the stories were almost too much and sometimes even disgusting or disturbing. I really recommend that you read the content warnings, which currently exist in the end of the book, to be prepared for what is to come. ...more |

It felt very simple both story wise and writing wise. The characters just traveled around, never stopping for a break or to come up with a plan. We were just thrown into even after event and in the end I didn’t really care anymore. I feel like this book is catered towards a younger audience because of the storytelling and writing. As an adult I just didn’t find this book good. The romance in the book is minimal. There is a lot of talk about romance but it’s never described from the characters perspective. We basically only get to hear about Darius feelings for Astrid when Yra points it out. Also, what’s with Astrid being written as a child at times? She can go from a vise woman capable of magic and battling, to being described as a child. In the beginning she was hugging a teddy bear and it was also described that Darius had read her bedtime stories while she lived at his castle. It’s also fit to mention that Darius have feelings for Astrid and is pinning after her throughout the story. Astrid is 19 years old and Darius is 500+ years…Darius is a creep. I don’t have any problem with people writing broken or ‘bad’ main characters, or characters that fight social norms or characters that are completely despicable or creepy. But I just thought I’d include this as a warning for people who, like me, don’t enjoy romanization of child like behavior. It’s also worth mentioning that Darius doesn’t have respect for women’s boundaries, or in this case a certain woman’s boundaries. His last lover left him and he couldn’t accept it so he refused to let her alone. It’s safe to say that this story wasn’t for me. I can see potential in it from what little we got to see of the world. There are vampires, demons, witches and all kinds of magic included which I thought was a fun concept. Unfortunately the world aren’t explored much through the story and the book reads like the author just came up with supernatural beings and powers on the go. ...more |

Unfortunately this didn’t hold up the the previous books mostly because I’m tired of all the back and forth and because of the inconsistency and repetitiveness. “He’d clearly been much more than a broken AI who liked to verbally assault his customers, and sometimes poison them.” We are four books into the series but have come nowhere. The relationship between Adam, Victor and Zee is progressing but only extremely slow. As soon as something positive happens between them something ruins it and they need to find each other again. Ariana manages to justify why it takes such time for them to come to terms with the fact that they like each other. But this have been going on for four books now. Because the books are so short you are tricked into believing that it isn’t that long, but in total we have now been through 720 pages and we are still stuck in the beginning and only 2 weeks(?) away from the beginning of the first book. “How do you get a dick out of a ketchup bottle?” Zee’s unmistakable voice piped up. When beginning this series it was (and still is) one of the best things I’ve read, but I don’t feel it with the latest book anymore. Everything is beginning to feel to repetitive. The main characters are trying to live their peaceful lives while running SOS Hotel but there is always something bad happening. They can’t get a single happy moment and it’s honestly a bit boring when it goes on for so long because it’s not a surprise anymore. A character get kidnapped and saved. They try to stop some shady business, get in trouble and then solve it. Every book is the same just focused on different characters. So much happens in these books that it makes you feel that things progress but in truth it’s just more unnecessary conflict being built up. I have read 720 pages in total yet the characters don’t know what to do with their feelings for each other, Adam have just begun telling them who he really is and I still don’t know how they will resolve all the problems they have with all the enemies they have acquired throughout these books. “But this fae wants my cock for face creams, Adam.” Lastly I just want to mention the inconsistency. Adam is working full time to keep his real identity intact, doing everything from lying to deleting footage and information about himself and sometimes even killing people to keep it safe. Yet on numerous occasions now he lets people who know he’s something else than human go free. Why? I don’t know. He have had chances to kill these people yet he doesn’t even though they can be a threat to him in the future. And I don’t understand it. He wouldn’t save Zee from Sebastian because he didn’t want to reveal his identity but he wouldn’t kill Agatha even though she suspected him to be something else. Why? “His face kind of contorted, lips turning down. Wait. Were we still laughing or was he having some kind of emotional seizure?” I don’t have a lot of positive things to say because I didn’t really enjoy reading this. In the first book I loved Zodiac’s overwhelming personality and Adam’s straightforwardness. It was really enjoyable to follow and see whether Victor would be someone we could trust or not. But now I just feel annoyed because the characters doesn’t change. The story continues to repeat itself over and over. The same conflicts come back and just isn’t solved. “Know that I’ll slaughter everyone here, if you wish it,” he whispered. “Give the word, and rivers will run red with the blood of any who would dare cause you harm.” Ariana Nash is one of my favorite authors and I’ve read all of her books, giving them all from 5 and 4, and on some occasions 3 stars. | Den här boken är väldigt problematiskt på flera sätt. Inte bara säger den att man kan göra sig själv lesbisk. Den är också väldigt okänslig mot kvinno Den här boken är väldigt problematiskt på flera sätt. Inte bara säger den att man kan göra sig själv lesbisk. Den är också väldigt okänslig mot kvinnor som lever i relation med män och vill leva i relation med män. Författarna sätter flator på en piedestal och får det att låta som att så länge du är i en relation med en kvinna så kommer alla dina problem att lösa sig. Det här är en extremt okänslig och overkligt bok. Hela boken utgår ifrån att man kan göra sig själv till leb. Jag tror att man föds med sin sexualitet och det är inget som andra kan influera. Självklart tror jag att man kan ha svårt att upptäcka sin sexualitet beroende på hur man är uppvuxen. Har man homofobiska föräldrar är tanken att man är homosexuell kanske inte det första man kommer på, vilket gör att man kan upptäcka det senare i livet. Men faktum kvarstår att man födds med sin sexualitet. Boken i andra hand säger att man kan göra sig själv till leb bara man har viljan att göra det. Jag tror dom flesta förstår varför detta är ett problematiskt sätt att tänka eftersom det helt förstör ordet attraktion totalt. Att vara attraherad av någon är något som händer naturligt (om du inte är ace) och inget man tvingar fram. När man kallar sig straight, lesbisk, gay eller bisexuell så betyder det att det är den sexualiteten man känner passar en bäst. Det könet eller könen man är attraherad av. Det är inget man kan bestämma eller ändra på. Författarna försöker att få lesbisk att bli ett samlings ord för kvinnor som bara inte tycker om män, det spelar ingen roll om du faktisk är attraherad av kvinnor eller inte. Jag tycker att bisexualitet skulle funka bättre i den här boken än homosexualitet eftersom många av kvinnorna som är med och vittnar om att de lyckas ’omprogrammera’ sig först var attraherade av män. Men bisexualitet nämns bara en eller två gånger. Det känns som att hela boken utgår från antigen eller. Du är antigen straight eller lesbisk. Mitt andra problem med det hela ’omprogrammera dig till lesbisk’ logiken är att det spelar dom rakt in i handen på dom som redan tror på omvandlingsterapi, på att man kan omvandla någons sexualitet. Om man kan omvandla någon till homosexuell, varför kan man inte omvandla en homosexuell till straight? ”Nej, du är inte heterosexuell, du lever heterosexuellt. Och kom inte och våpa dig med att du inte ’tycker om’ snippor, som en annan unge som inte vill ha lök i färssåsen. Du får väll öva i jösse namn!” Det här är alltså ett utdrag direkt ifrån boken. Jag har inte ord nog för att kunna förklara hur okänsligt det är att säga något sånt. Dessa kvinnors lösning till århundraden av diskriminering mot kvinnor och våld i hem är alltså att göra alla lesbiska. Och kan du inte bli lesbisk då blir du kallad barnslig. Att säga något som” bli bara lesbisk” är så otroligt okänslig och kommer att få flera kvinnor att må dåligt över att de inte ’lyckats bli flator’. Kvinnor som har varit med om trauma från en nära relation vill nog inte höra att lösningen på alla problem är att bli lesbisk. Och vem kan säga att de inte tar med sig traumat in i sin lesbiska relation också? Vad händer med alla kvinnor som forfarande är attraherade av män även efter de har blivit illa behandlade, ska de bara ge upp och aldrig försöka hitta en annan man att tycka om. Ska vi lära kvinnor att alla män vill dom illa och att det bästa sättet är att bara stryka män helt från våra liv? Det är sant vad de säger om att kvinnor i en relation med en man för det mesta drar nitlotten och behöver ta större ansvar för hushåll och barn samtidigt som de lägger sin karriär och fritid sist. Men ska vi inte fortsätta att slåss för våra rättigheter istället för att lämna alla våra straighta systrar i sticket? Jag håller med boken om att vi måste jobba för att normalisera annat än heterosexuella förhållanden. Att det finns många kvinnor och män som är fast i hetero relationer för att de känner att det är deras plikt. Vi måste definitivt normalisera att leva i annat än monogama relationer. Vi måste prata om hur kvinnor i en relation med män får andra förväntningar ifrån samhället och männen än vad männen får. Hur en kvinna i en hetero relation nästan alltid förlorar på något sätt. Boken var bra på att ta upp fakta och statistik på hur kvinnor blir behandlade av män i sina relationer, hur kvinnorna förlorar både ekonomiskt och psykiskt. Även om det tar 100 år tills vi är lika så borde vi inte ge upp. Att göra alla lesbiska är inte lösningen. Jag kanske överreagerar och läger för mycket tid på att argumentera varför det som står i boken är fel. Att det inte finns en chans att två flator som bestämmer sig för att skriva en bok om att alla borde bli lesbiska faktiskt har en risk att göra alla lesbiska. Men det är bara tanken på allt potential den här boken kunde ha haft som får mig att bli ledsen. För jag gillade delar av boken. Delarna där de tog up statistik om hur kvinnor blir behandlad av män i relationer. Jag har lärt mig av den här boken och det är därför det var så tråkigt att istället för att vara en bok som upplyser folk om våld som kvinnor behöver ta emot i hemmet. The vibe the book gave off from the start made me realize that this wasn’t going to be my type of story and the characters wouldn’t work for me. But I’m not one to dnf books so I wanted to give it a chance. Unfortunately it didn’t get better. I didn’t particularly enjoy the writing, it felt simple and didn’t flow very well in my head. I also wasn’t a fan of the beginning. The book begins with a battle and then it cools off and not a lot happens for the rest of the story. Overall it was very slow paced. I didn’t grow to care about the characters when reading the story and in the end I didn’t really care what happened to them. The beginning of the book was very intriguing but then it just went downhill… I think the main problem with this book that it’s trying to tackle an extremely horrible experience in a very shallow way. Sen have grown up with homophobic parents and have been trough conversion therapy, so understandably he is traumatized from it. In the beginning I think the book does a great job in explaining Sen’s experience. But it’s after he gets closer to Kai that things just get too shallow. The book never deal with Sen’s trauma in a satisfactory way. It’s like the author wanted an easy way out and took Sen’s trauma in a very light manner. Another problem I have is that the romance is very fast paced. The characters don’t get that much time together and what we do get to see feels rushed. There is barely any build up, and when the characters have gotten to know each other there aren’t any moments where the reader can understand why they fall in love. I like the idea of this story, but it could have been executed in a better way. The characters are likable, albeit not that memorable, but they are enough to carry the story. If you decide to read it you should be prepared for something ridiculous and light hearted, a book where nothing is explained or questioned. If you like a book that fits what I just described then I think you should read it, otherwise no. I don’t like books where nothing is taken seriously, and in this book nothing was taken seriously. They met a farmer who went from threatening them with a gun to the next second invite them to his home after they appeared in his cow pasture in an elevator. Benvolio and Mercutio just arrive with a time machine and meet strangers and no one questions the existence of it. None of the characters seem to question or take anything in general seriously, main characters and side characters alike. They never sit down and have a conversation about what to do when they face trouble, they just run around doing things all the time and treat someones death like it’s nothing. The way the book is written is so unreal because people don’t act that way. Things aren’t solved that quickly. This book was very fast paced, it jumped from event to event like it was afraid of being tranquil. It was annoying because it didn’t allow the reader to take anything in, if something happened, something bigger happened the next second. We didn’t get the chance to get to know the characters, they were very shallow and only had one character trait. Benvolio were the careful one, while Mercutio were impulsive, and that were basically all there was to the characters. There was next to no world building. We go from time traveling to summoning demons and making deals with fairies. It’s never explained to what extent the world is magical or if it’s known to the public that magical creatures exist. I was surprised, to say the least, when Mercutio suddenly summoned a demon when nothing had been said before about demons existing. I also don’t understand whether being homosexual is okay or not. Under some circumstances they seem to want to keep it to themselves while at other times they are very obvious about it. It’s things like this, explanations and world building, that I miss. The book felt like two separate books, the first part was Benvolio and Mercutio traveling around to different times while the other was them trying to save Mercutio from being killed. What bothered me with that was that from the beginning Mercutio knew he would die in three days, instead of trying to find out how or come up with a plan on how to stop that, or even having a mental breakdown about the fact that he would die in three days, he and Benvolio just took the time machine and traveled around. It was first after that had done that that they took the fact that Mercutio would die seriously and that was after Mercutio had already died. Benvolio literally had to watch Mercutio die because Mercutio hadn’t mentioned a thing or even seemed to care that he would die. He just accepted it as fact. Like excuse me, sir, you got a Time Machine, use it! Don’t just accept your death for fact when your lover literally invented a time machine to be able to go back in time and save your life. Also older Benvolio, aka Big Ben, just showed up, said that Mercutio would die in three days and then left. You can’t even tell him how he will die? Either way, I think you understand how I feel about this book. It wasn’t good and I didn’t enjoy reading it. I hope other people will have a mover enjoyable experience with it! ...more |
