This was my first Junji Ito, but I'm already looking forward to reading Uzumaki. I found myself really in a reading mood, but also realised I was completely unable to focus on anything, so I thought I'd try a graphic novel - and was it effective. I was completely captivated for the two hours it took me to read this. On first glance, Gyo is a horror manga about fish with legs. It sounded absurd, but as I'm trash for monster narratives, I was also intrigued. And sure, for the first 100 pages or so I mainly found myself laughing at the absurdity of the concept - but I didn't mind, I was having the best time tbh. After that, however, it got gory very quickly. This feels like the epitome of body horror. While I felt the plot lost its structure a bit, I do feel like, as counterintuitive as it is, this is one of the rare novels where I actually like the way the romance is done and really found myself caring. Sure, it happens sometimes, but here I really felt invested, you know. Even though they were going through it and not always great to each other.
The book also includes two short stories, both of which are really, really short. The first one was mainly very funny, in my opinion. The second one, dealing with strange carvings that emerge in a mountain after an earthquake, honestly was that kind of concept horror that doesn't let you go. Incredible. Overall, the mix of things that were hysterically funny, and the extreme horror, as well as the art that reflected both sides of this coin too, was what made Gyo really worthwhile for me....more

There were a few things that irked me, like the impactless cussing, which seemed to be strangely overdone. This was soon called out by one of the characters, though. The artwork completely blew me away once again, the colouring in particular. And I felt that the story was more closed off than after the first volume. I think I'll be picking up the next one, and I'm looking forward to doing so....more
