Especially, as in this case, when it's outside my usual genre (fantasy). Being a big fan of the Merlin books, I wasn't sure that Stewart's romantic suspense works were my cup of tea. Boy, was I wrong. Mary Stewart worked her magic in this book just as effectively as she did in the Merlin books, creating a compelling, nuanced heroine and weaving beautiful, gossamer threads of description throughout the book. The plot revolves around a young governess sent to tend to the 9 year-old Count de Valmy, only to find that there may be someone conspiring against her young charge. It hits all the highlights as it unfolds: there's mystery, of course, and romance, combined with an elegantly devilish villain, a smoldering male lead, and plenty of excitement. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Stewart's beautiful writing and appreciates softer heroines who have a core of bravery and strength. All in all, it's a fine enough introduction to the genre that I intend to check out her other books in this vein....more
