Headless beaver? Seriously?? I was on the floor laughing because of this. I didn’t read the summary (as my bad–and-not-so-bad habit dictates) so the surprise was awesome! I knew I’d fall in love with this book, and I did. It wasinsanely good.
It’s been a while since I laughed so much from reading a book. My mum was giving me awkward faces because of the stupid grin I had. Sooooo many funny moments! If I’d have to pick my favorite quotes from this book I’d just copy paste every word from it. This is why I love Susan Elizabeth Phillips so much. She feeds my quote addiction… Feeds it sooo well…. Mmmmmm…

The characters have depth. Even though they are funny and joke all the time, deep inside they have dramas that shape their personalities into what they are. If you think this book is just for laughs, you’re wrong. Susan Elizabeth Phillips always writes a good emotional story.
Loved the endless verbal sparring between Dean and Blue. The way she was teasing him was priceless. They make such a cute couple. I’d bring them together, sit on the couch and just watch them beat each other’s ass for an entire day. Or two.
It’s cruel of Dean to use the poor girl (Blue) only for getting some distance between women who harass him, fans and nosy people. But thinking about Blue’s reasons why she’s sticking with him I guess they’re even. She needs a place to stay and some money, he needs someone who scares people away.
The way Blue acts with Mrs. Garrison amazes me. I respect this chick with all my heart. She’s the female character I love the most from the Chicago Stars series.
Jack and April also have a nice story. I used to think being a rockstar would be awesome. Living an excited life, singing or playing an instrument, rocking on stage. But eventually it ends your private life, messes with your head and transforms you into a different person. This different person turns out to be bad. Jack is a really complicated guy so I can’t really see how April could have had a normal life with him in the past. Leaving your child just so you could hang out with rockers is a little too much. Now she’s trying to make things right but it sure won’t be easy. I tried to like her but I failed. Especially in the beginning. Same goes with Jack, which I hated till the end. I mean yeah he tried to justify himself and all but he f*cked up too much in my opinion.
Riley was an interesting kid, actually mature for her age and very intelligent. Initially I thought there was a bit too much focus on her but it turned out to be ok at the end, it all added depth to the story.
Nita is a strange woman. She made me hate her at times because of how annoying she is and laugh in other times when she was... well... annoying as well. So an annoying character that shifts your mood according to Blue’s cooking.
As usual I was trying to guess how it’s going to end, to try to see what problems they’ll have, to predict the typical big fight and who will be the one crawling back and apologizing. As usual, Susan Elizabeth Phillips bamboozled me. I can’t predict this woman at all! This is one of the main reasons why she’s between my top favorite authors. Loved the story, the characters were as usual messed up in the head and just plain awesome. Blue was such a great heroine and Dean was simply perfect. A touchy side-story and lots of good romance. My favorite book in the series.
P.S. Choosing the damn quotes was so hard for me!!! Just five out of so many that I selected. A tough job indeed!
Top 5 quotes
#5“I’m not a drug dealer!” he retorted hotly. “You’re not a movie star.” “Don’t rub it in. The truth is, I’m a semifamous male model with ambitions of being a movie star.” “You’re gay.”
#4“I’ll take your best suite,” he said. “And a small room by the elevator for my insane companion. If that’s a problem, put her next to any old ice machine.”
#3“The first time I saw her was at a street carnival.” He walked over to inspect the countertops. “She had her face stuck through one of those wooden cutouts, so naturally she caught my attention. You’ve got to admit that face is something. By the time I saw the rest of her, it was too late.” “I’m sitting right here,” Blue reminded them.
#2“Uh, ma’am…You need some help?” Her paws didn’t break rhythm. “You got a gun?” “Not with me.” “Then I’ve got no use for you.”
#1“Acht, this Dean Roam-a-lot, he is very famous man in America, yes? My poor husband” —she curled her fingers around Dean’s arm— “his Eeenglish is veddy, veddy bad, and he does not understand this. But my Eeenglish is veddy, veddy good, yes? And everywhere we go, these pipples—pipples like you—they come up to him and say they think he is this man, this Dean Roam-a-lot. But I say, no, my husband is not famous in America, but veddy famous in our country. He is a veddy famous—how you say?—por-nog-ra-pher.”...more

Why? Because of Holly. I won’t hide my hate towards her, I found her annoying since the first chapter she appeared in. Towards the end… meh… A girl who prefers a ragdoll geek over a handsome-funny-protective-potent-demon. What’s wrong with you? Her blah-ness was annoying, her “sickness” was annoying, she may very well be the definition of annoying. And he still loves her *facepalm*. What made me give this book the extra star-whatever was Cadeon himself. Cade rocks, Holly sucks.
Ok ok, I’ll be serious for a bit. The story was great, nice turn of events, smart dialogue and funny scenes. Well-built characters and a touching love story. A book worth reading.
Some quotes that I loved: “Has anyone ever told you you’re sexy as hell when you’re mathematizing?”
“Very well. What do you do as a mercenary?” “I specialize in usurping thrones. They call me the kingmaker.” Bragging now?
“Cadeon, are you even listening to me?” “What? Yeah, was just thinking about…how http always turns to https when I carry out a transaction.” “Exactly!” Good save.
“Okay, now you really don’t need to do that blushing virgin bit anymore—I got to ogle your body at my leisure for hours. Matter of fact, I had so long, I could have painted you, instead of just taking pictures with my sat-phone.” He held up his phone with a wink. “I loathe you,” she said, precariously bending to collect her toiletries and clothes. As she headed for the bathroom, she gave him the evilest eye she could muster….
With a sigh, she asked, “Why do you care if I believe you or not?” “Because if you think I got a leg over with that slag, then the chance of anything sexual with you will be drastically reduced.” Without looking up, she said, “Cadeon, a chance can’t be reduced from zero.” “Gods, I love it when you talk mathy to me.”
“Do you honestly want credit because you didn’t do anything to a helpless female?” “No! Yes. No, damn it—”
Thirty nerve-shattering minutes passed before Cadeon returned. “What happened? Tell me!” “Everything’s taken care of.” She frowned. “You smell like beer.” He rolled his eyes. “Oh, yeah, Holly, like me and the cop were downing a beer together.” Of course, he and the cop had completely been downing a beer together.
Regin slapped her knees. “Oh, my gods, look at him running like his life depended on catching us.” She slid open the door. “Is this straight outta Platoon, or what? Willem!” she cried, holding out one hand. “Run, Willem!” Then she choked on her laughter. ...more

He had that mysterious air surrounding him that determined you to want to know everything about his life. I actually couldn’t wait to get my hand on this book; thinking that it’s number 15 in the series made me want to think about skipping the rest of them, but a fellow reader suggested not to do that since almost all of the books are related to each other. I will advise you to do the same. Anyways, FINALLY I started it and my first shock was the fact that it’s long. 736 pages long…. Wow that’s a lot of Ash!
The book is divided into two parts, the first one is about his early life, and the second is, as you know after reading the previous books (shame on you if you didn’t), about his existence after his death.
Part one is brutal, I tell you this. In most of it I wanted to cry, the rest I wanted to kill almost all the characters in it except for Ash, and towards the end I got disgusted towards humanity. Yes, it was that bad. I won’t get into details because I don’t want to spoil it, but my conclusion is that we all have to learn a lot from this man. The amount of strength he showed is amazing and made me respect and love him even more than before.
Part two is softer, if I can use that term, compared to the first one. It’s full of a new Acheron, raw, sarcastic and determined to kick the ass of any SOB who gets in his way. Go Ash! The change in him is amazing, the story gets interesting and we have a happy ending (sort of). I’ll just leave it to this.
Aaanyways, in the end I must say that even after 736 pages I still didn’t get enough of this guy. He officially is my favorite character in this series, and probably can even compete with Bones (Night Huntress – check it out! It’s awesome). I still can’t make up my mind between these two lol. This certainly is my favorite book in this series.
Oh and before I forget, let me know what your thoughts on the Sprite issue. Was I the only one who found it hilarious? Drinking it will never be the same again…
Here are some quotes that I loved:
Savitar shoved Takeshi back. "Your mother was a goatherder."
"It's an honorable profession."
"Yeah for a goat."
"I don't like your hair black."
He gave her a droll stare. "And I don't like your head attached to your shoulders. Guess we can't all have what we want, huh?"
"You can't live alone all the time, Ash... or is it Asheron, Acheron or Apostolos? I don't even know what to call you."

Let me start by giving thanks to my dear friend Alk who forced me to give this book a try. If it weren’t for her I wouldn’t have given this book a second glance. You can probably blame it on the cover and on all those negative reviews that are going around Goodreads.
Speaking of which, I need to clear out a few things. There are many people in my Goodreads friend list who absolutely love this book. And there are others who loathe the mere sight of it. Now, call me an asshole but I thought that the people who lovedMorganville Vampiresare overreacting, and that the ones who hate it are right to do so. What made me think so is the following quote:
"What normal girl loved physics? Abnormal ones. Ones who were not ever going to be hot. And face it, being hot? That was what life was all about."
It makes the MC sound like a total douche, doesn’t it? This quote can be found in the first chapter of the book. Do you see why so many people dropped it without a second thought? Do you? Well, I do. Let me give you a piece of advice. Go on with reading the book and you’ll find out why Claire, the MC, formed this thought in the first place.(view spoiler)[Her major is actually Physics, and you find this out in the second book.(hide spoiler)]This is why you cannot take the above quote seriously. It’s exactly like the time you see your crush date the beautiful, yet stupid, girl in your class and wishing to trade your intelligence with beauty just so you would be in her place. Would you actually do it? Maybe. Personally, I wouldn’t. Did I ever have thoughts similar to this? Sure I did, I’m human after all. Anyways, back to my point. It seems a bit too harsh to judgeGlass Housesaccording to this quote only.
Claire is one fucked up character, and I love her for it. I can already see her grow out of this awkward freakish skin she’s currently wearing. And oh gosh can Rachel Caine write her shit. The characters are deep, her story is fascinating and, from what I’ve heard, she’s awesome at creating atmospheric horror scenes. I did not encounter one of those scenes yet, but I can say that I’m looking forward to them.
And another thing. The ending. What. The. Hell. I’ve never had a cliffhanger as big as this one. I have no words. I can only say that I’m grateful for having the next book available, else I would end up strangling someone because of this frustration!
Would I recommend this to you? Well, it depends. Are you into Urban Fantasy? Do you care about your characters feeling real (no Mary Sues)? Do you shy away from violence and cruelty? Would you mind reading a long series? Morganville Vamps has all that, and more. So think carefully before making your decision. I, for one, liked it a lot. There were some parts of the story that dragged on a bit too much, but the rest was badass. I can’t wait to start book #2.
Oh, and one final thing before I end the review.Morganville Vampireshas 13 published books, and 2 more that will be published in 2013. 15+ books?! Holy shit, that’s a shitload of books! I do hope that I’ll be able to reach book 15 without getting fed up with the series. Here’s to hoping!...more
