I heard people calling this a "horror short story" and even though it quite doesn't fit the genre i can see why they put it in that spot. the glaring manipulation and firm grip the husband has on the author is palpable through the narration, and even more disturbing than the mental illness adn hallucination aspect of it. What's also eerie is seeing how the woman deteriorates more and more fro this suppoused illness the more she is confined and how convince she is of her own affliction. I'd hate to think about the absolute lack of medical care for women in the time this story is written....more

All in all, the middle chapters of the books can be a little boring and overwhelming with descriptions and repetitive, but it gets better in the last 5 or so chapters. The idea is absolutely original and groundbreaking for the time it was written. The only downside is how dragged some scenes get. A fantastic read for classic sci-fi lovers....more
