I could not resist taking a read of the freebie to celebrate it's book birthday/anniversary. From the first page the book had me hooked I had not read anything like this before even though I am a big fan or vampire tales. I found I really enjoyed it.
It did feel a little rushed in places and I like some other readers would have loved to hear more about the wedding. The thing that stopped it getting a 5* review from me was that my taste does not really extend to the explicit sex scenes or the swearing. I know lots of readers who would absolutely love this though and will recommend to my horny friends....more

The descriptions of the house draw you deep inside and I certainly felt part of the story. A truly unique twist on a ghost story, one I have never come across before. I really hope that the author is able to expand on the love between Claire and Dorian.
It was wonderful how the author referred to the afterlife as 'The Great Space' and death to an 'unraveling'. Here is a small sample:
'How long since my unraveling? The sun rises and falls in an incomprehensible blur. It could have been hours; it could have been a thousand years.'

Oh boy are they coming, and they are on a mission. The birds have been sent out by their Wing Commander to find and steal lots of food for their stock pile to enable them to share with the others. But something does not seem at all right.
Leni and the team cannot understand why they are sent to attack and steal the cones fron the ice-cream parlour in the little seaside town. They all know ice-cream is poisonous to seagulls.
This is a great read that will keep both kids and maybe even adult readers guessing. Fabulous characters some you will even love to hate like the fake Italian Mr. Binkie is he the dodgy one of the story? You will have to check it out for yourself.
Watch out for the guest appearance of Nick, on holiday from the North Pole with his lovely wife. He is craving mince pie flavoured ice-cream.
So many little twists and turns it us hard to see where the story will take us and like someone else mentioned this has elements of a black and white war movie with planes 'chocks away old chum'
Very highly recommended may make you laugh and even cry so you have been warned....more

I did not give this a 5 star ratA truly remarkable book to introduce children to the different types of scientists in the world. Great illustrations.
I did not give this a 5 star rating because the pronunciation of the words were American. It would prove a tad confusing for a British speaking child for example
Biologist = bi-alla-jist
UK phonetic = bi-ol-o-gist
Still a very good book and I thank the author for the special promo for National Science Day. ...more

A Day in the Life of a Paramedic
What a lovely little book, a story based on the true life experiences of a First Responder Ambulance Crew.
This book will give little ones an insight into the working day of a Paramedic, explaining how they set up the ambulance and make sure they have everything on board for an emergency call out.
It will also teach them that it is very wrong to make prank calls to the ambulance service. The story will show them that because of a prank call Chris and Zara were late to help someone who was in terrible pain.
Bright illustrations are sure to delight youngster, and even babies can be introduced to the Amubulance with its bright yellow colour and flashing blue lights. A delightful way to teach children about the NHS Service that helps countless people each and every day....more

Historical fiction that inspired further reading about true life events
Never a fan of history I only ever learned the basics about big world events. This book intrigued me and being a 'Prime First Reads' I had nothing to lose.
I knew it was fiction based on true life events and found that as I read about these devastating times I actually wanted to find out some more of the facts. For me this is the sign of a good book if it encourages further reading....more

The grass is not always greener on the other side.
A unique little picture book about being thankful for what you have. Blade is literally a 'blade of grass' who lives on the edge of the garden in the shade. He is jealous of his cousin Augustine. She lives in the middle of the garden and Blade thinks her the centre of attention.
However, things are not what they seem and when Blade manages to up-root himself he is in for a rude awakening. What will the outcome be. Check it out for yourselves. Happy Reading....more

I am lucky to have obtained a stunning signed copy of this hardback book. It makes a truly beautiful gift for any reader young or simply young at heart.
A truly delightful read. It does not quite get the five stars due to difficulty reading some of the text that was placed over dark images. The book is stunning though, with its delightful illustrations. The story is further elevated by intermittently placed pages of tracing paper, putting the reader next to the little fox travelling over thin ice. Both the fox and reader given the occassional glimpse of a shadow or possible danger lurking beneath.
I loved how we got to read both sides of the story. The little foxes tale highlighted in a pretty blue font dotted with pawprints that meander across the pages, intertwined with Leila's experience of being uprooted from Damascus and being separated from her mother. Then finally reuniting on an Arctic Adventure many years later.
We were amazed to learn this was based on the true story of Anna who actually did cross a continent. WOW! 2,000 miles in 76 days. The book also highlights several environmental issues and is a learning curve for all. A book to treasure for all times....more

I can clearly see how this was an award winner. I read this after reading'The Lost Whale'and found both books equally rewarding to read. The black and white illustrations bring the story to life and give it a sense of great sadness. Both'Bear'and the little girl'April'having experienced loss and feeling alone.
It was wonderful how the story touched on the very important environment issues of the melting snow caps and the decline of the Polar Bear. Just like 'The Lost Whale' this book urged me into doing more research about theArcticand theenvironmental issuesacross the globe. For me that is always the sign of a good book if it encourages further reading.

A heartfelt tale told in verse. The story of a young talented violinist finding her place in the world. Suddenly her mums Mental Health issues take a turn for the worst and things begin to go downhill.
Words dance lyrically across thick pages illustrated with images compiled using sheet music and beautiful musical notes.
It took us longer to read than expected as we kept stopping to listen to the wonderful classical music that weaves endlessly through the story. Namely 'The Lark Ascending' by Robert Vaughan Williams inspired by the poem of the same name created by George Meredith.
We recommend you make this a must read of 2023 if you have not read the story already....more

This story is based on theNorse Legend of the 'Billow Maidens'not something I had heard of before. However, the story did mention the Billow Maiden was also sometimes called theSelkie. Now I absolutely LOVE a Selkie tale (stories of seals who shed their skin and can walk on land, and if it is stolen then they become trapped). I admit there are some vague similarities but for me this was not a tale of the Selkie.
Ailsa and her mum are in the Scottish Islands due to her mum's illness, the story covers the topics of family, care and new friendships with a hint of magic from the old myths and legends.
This is a good story but there was an over use of the word 'Aye' prounounced 'I' the Scottish word for yes. Hence the score of three stars. (I wonder if the author did this to keep reminding us we were on a Scottish Island).
I managed to find an old blog post if you want to check out more info on the'Billow or Wave Maidens'

But instead, a sleep that will blossom and bloom...
This third book in the'Fairy Tales Gone Bad'series now completes my collection. This enjoyable trilogy now sits proudly on my bookcase amid some of my favourite reads.
I've loved the dark twists, in these almost gothic tales for younger readers (or those simply young at heart). These stories are written in a semi-lyrical way. Almost, but for me, not quite a story in verse hence just a four star rating. (Sometimes the rhythm did not quite flow smoothly).
In this story, Eshe and her sisters are all modern day fairy godmothers, able to bestow wonderous gifts on others. However, being the youngest and the thirteenth child Eshe is different. Her gift is to see into the future usually glimpsing the terrible things that are about to occur.
Eshe's sisters mock her and don't believe her predictions, little knowing that she has already stopped several bad things from happening. Will Eshe be able to stop the dreadful things about to happen to Queen Araminta's child -Princess Rose? For that you will simply have to check out the book for yourself.
Out of the trilogy my favourite has to be'Frankenstiltskin'a combination of a Frankenstein story and the fairy tale of Rumplestiltskin. The main character being a Taxidermist ~ BRILLIANT!...more
