In the world of the fire service, there is a sacred oath of honor and sacrifice sworn by those who run into danger to save lives when everyone else runs away. This is the calling and heroic duty of the firefighter. It’s a job title unlike any other comprised of a family of brothers and sisters who trust each other with their lives, all live a life of adrenaline, valor, steadfast humility, tragedy and triumph. For more than 150 years, the New York City Fire Department has led from the front and set the standard for departments around the world to follow. One of its most cherished members is William “Bill” M. Feehan, a second-generation firefighter. His father, 32-year veteran William P. Feehan served the FDNY proudly from 1926 to 1958. In 1959, Bill followed in his father’s footsteps. Unlike most professions, the FDNY is an institution whose ranks span generations for more than a century. The FDNY is the world’s second biggest fire department (10,751 firefighters strong) after Tokyo (18,408 firefighters total), FDNY being the busiest in the world. However, little did it know just how significant an impact the passing of the torch from Bill senior to his son would have on history. Now, acclaimed author Brian McDonald “My Father’s Gun” steps out of the gritty, crime-ridden cloak and dagger world of the NYPD and boldly ventures beyond the headlines and media hype of the firefighter into a humble and courageous FDNY clan. Enter the Feehan family, like Tom Selleck’s police procedural “Blue Bloods,” the patriarch of this venerable alchemy of brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins is Bill Feehan. An Army Korean War vet, Bill joined the FDNY in 1959. Over the next forty years, he dealt with thousands of fires and disasters, rising through the ranks becoming the only man to hold virtually every rank within the New York City Fire Department. Bill Feehan’s meteoric rise to fame within the FDNY is chronicled in the biography “Five Floors Up: The Heroic Family Story of Four Generations in the FDNY.” The title actually comes from the motto of Engine 59, a company Bill served with the longest before promotion to other specialized sectors within the department. “Five Floors Up, Five Rooms In” was the aggressive company’s mantra. With experience, came knowledge, and with knowledge came respect from those in the upper echelon of the FDNY. Bill Feehan possessed an encyclopedic wealth of knowledge and expertise that saw the city and the fire department through the most extreme circumstances. Every call brought new challenges and new dangers. As 1st Deputy Commissioner, Bill cherished the men and women under his command, watching in awe over their unyielding courage under fire and determination to win whatever battle they were called upon to combat. In a 1992 interview, Bill quoted the spirit of a New York firefighter poignantly: “When you have a department whose men and women are expected to be ready at any moment to put their life on the line, to go to the aid of a stranger even when it means that you may put yourself in harm’s way, actually in dire peril… I don’t think you can pay people to do that job. There has to be something beyond money that makes them do that.” Presiding over Academy graduations, Medal ceremonies and far too many funerals eulogizing fallen heroes, Chief Feehan knew the risks associated with an incredibly perilous vocation and held the fragility of life in high regard for those who served on the Thin Red Line. Bill Feehan’s provocative words illustrate just how thin the line between life and death is for New York’s Bravest. Since established as a paid fire department in 1875, the FDNY has lost more than 700 firefighters. “The thing that sets the firefighter apart is that it’s he or she who when the bell sounds, goes to do whatever is necessary to help the person who called them. No matter what we do, no matter how well we train, no matter how good our equipment is, no matter how hard we try, no matter what, the time will come when we will lose another firefighter.” Those words would never be more profound than in 2001. On June 17th 2001, a Queens hardware store fire summoned hundreds of New York’s Bravest to the scene, among them was the elite Rescue 4, a specialized all-hazard company tasked with rescuing civilians and firefighters from the most dangerous environments. Little did they know that in the ensuing hours, an explosion would claim the lives of Harry S. Ford and Brian D. Fahey of Rescue 4 including John J. Downing of Ladder 163. Bill Feehan was called to the scene immediately along with Chief of Department Pete Ganci, Chief of Rescue Operations Ray Downey, Chief of Operations Daniel Nigro and Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen. The tragedy would widow three wives and leave eight children fatherless, in one of the worst pre-9/11 tragedies to besiege the FDNY. Yet, fate wasn’t done dealing the gallant department a deadly card; less than three months after the Father’s Day Fire, history and the world would be changed forever on a clear blue-sky morning on September 11th 2001. Bill Feehan is in his office at FDNY Headquarters, situated in Brooklyn when the loud scream of a jetliner and thunderous explosion rocks the building; a 767 hijacked by terrorists was transformed into a diabolical Weapon of Mass Destruction slamming into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Looking out his window, Chief Feehan instinctively reacts grabbing his closest aides. Bill Feehan and company rush to Manhattan as a city-wide mobilization deploys more than 750 firefighters from 121 Engine companies, 62 Ladder companies, 100 Ambulances, all five Rescue companies, Hazmat team and hundreds of police from the NYPD’s Patrol division, Emergency Service Unit and the Bomb Squad; all converging on the epicenter of the largest high-rise fire and rescue operation in history. Sadly, before day’s end, the catastrophic collapse of The World Trade Center would kill 2,977 people, among them 343 firefighters and decimate the FDNY’s command structure: Chief of Department Pete Ganci, Rescue Chief Ray Downey, Fire Department Chaplain Mychal Judge and 1st Deputy Commissioner Bill Feehan were murdered on the 21st century’s Day of Infamy. According to the New York Times, more than one thousand-seven hundred years of FDNY experience was lost in the one hour it took both towers to fall. It was a crushing blow not only to the city of New York but the entire nation as millions rallied behind America’s first responders. In a job that is past down to generations of families, the Feehan family: sons: John (Battalion Chief), Bill, and daughters: Beth, Elizabeth and Tara along with son-in-law Brian Davan, also an FDNY Battalion Chief are staunch advocates of William M. Feehan’s legacy of courage, love, service and sacrifice. Bill’s 42-years with New York’s Bravest complimented by his monumental contributions of innovation and religious drive to ensure a safer New York and premiere fire department shines through in the next generation, including his six grandchildren: one of whom is now a member of the FDNY. After listening to this book on Audible, Brian McDonald does an exceptional job painting an honest, heartwarming and viscerally engaging portrait of a real-life, blue collar firefighting family. If you’re a fan of McDonald’s book and documentary “My Father’s Gun,” or the Youtube documentary “Chief,” then “Five Floors Up: The Heroic Family Story of Four Generations in the FDNY” is right up your alley. Well worth the time to read or listen! ...more |

| In Southern California, nothing is ever what it seems. Renowned for being the art and entertainment capitol of the world, Los Angeles County harbors In Southern California, nothing is ever what it seems. Renowned for being the art and entertainment capitol of the world, Los Angeles County harbors a rich mix of diverse cultures and eclectic weather patterns that change erratically with the seasons: Rainy season, May Gray, June Gloom with hot, hazy temperatures compounded with smog eclipsed by the most explosive and dreaded season of all, Fire Season. No other place on earth burns more ferociously than the state of California, plagued by seasonal droughts combined with a volatile fuel load creates favorable conditions for disastrous wildfires costing billions of dollars annually. The elemental force that is fire has an iron grip on the Sunshine State. However, while nature provides a playground for the Red Devil, it is often the warped mentality and sadistic intentions of man who exploits its destructive and deadly ferocity. “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.” Ironically, where there’s fire, there’s a spark. In the spring of 1984, one man would take advantage of this hypnotic, seductive and sinister element, wielding it as a poor man’s Weapon of Mass Destruction. Enter John Leonard Orr, head of the Glendale Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Unit, struggling novelist, family man to his two daughters, Carrie and Lori, by the light of day, and history’s most prolific serial arsonist by night lurking in the shadows. Like the split personality of a comic strip character’s alter ego, John Orr’s foreboding super villain possesses a power and level of psychopathy not to be trifled with. An expert in the field of firefighting and arson investigation, the maniacal “Pillowcase Pyro” is free to prowl Southern California setting brush and structure fires at will, often with devastating and deadly results. In October of 1984, the “Pillowcase Pyro” would graduate to murder with the deaths of four people slain in a fatal shopping mall blaze at Ole’s Home Center. The World Series created a busy turnout in the mall. A small fire ignited in an area of foam cushions spawning a deadly backdraft that sealed the fates of a 17-year-old store employee, 26-year-old mother of two, a 52-year-old grandmother and her 2-year-old grandson. The multiple alarm inferno triggers an instantaneous response by firefighters and investigators from various fire agencies bordering the community of Pasadena where Ole’s is situated. First on the scene is none other than arson investigation extraordinaire Captain John Orr who is quick to rule the Ole’s disaster arson while his colleagues are more inclined to rule it an accident. “The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.” ― Albert Einstein. Unfortunately, more menacing fires loom on the horizon as the “Sunshine State” is about to be transformed into a combustible powder keg with dire consequences for the fire service and those they are sworn to protect. Over the course of seven years: from 1984 to 1991, the Pillowcase Pyro is on a roll, igniting thousands of fires in numerous department stores running the length of the main highway stretching from the suburb of Glendale to Los Angeles. With every suspicious fire, more damming evidence begins to emerge with John Orr as one of ten likely suspects in the case. It isn’t until investigators get their hands on a latent fingerprint and a chilling manuscript “Points of Origin” written by John Orr himself. The manuscript is a novel chronicling the lives of a stereotypical fire investigator and depraved serial arsonist. It’s a blueprint into the mind of a serial killer. That’s the premise behind the poignant memoir and biography “Burned: Pyromania, Murder and a Daughter’s Nightmare.” Written by Frank C. Girardot Jr. and co-written with Lori Orr Kovach, the book provides an unflinching glimpse into the terrifying arson spree of John Orr and the disastrous impact that his reign of terror had on his family and the community he was supposed to serve and protect. Upon John Orr’s capture and conviction in 1992, found guilty on three counts of arson and again in 1993 with three more counts of arson including an unsuccessful plea bargain to reduce his sentence, John Orr is charged with six counts of arson and given a life sentence. In 1998, Orr is convicted of four counts of murder for the four deaths in the 1984 Ole’s arson blaze. The tumultuous years of a long and drawn-out trial brings a 17-year-old Lori Orr’s life and her family’s world crashing to its knees. In an act of desperation and self-preservation, John Orr urges his two daughters Carrie his oldest and Lori his youngest from a previously failed marriage to testify on his behalf. It was Lori’s emotional testimony that swayed the jury from giving John Orr the Death Penalty. Ultimately, there’s more to this courtroom drama than meets the eye. Lori takes the reader on a journey back in time, offering a personal glimpse into her stepfather’s disturbing past. John Orr was the youngest of three sons raised by parents who never got along very well and that led to a lot of insecurity. At the age of twelve, he raped a relative but never received counselling and would often experiment by setting small nuisance fires. During his adult years, he was considered a rebel. He was always interested in pursuing a career in firefighting or law enforcement. While in the Air Force, he resented authority and the tight regimented hierarchy, but somehow managed to survive his tour of duty as an Air Force Firefighter and evade disciplinary action. After the Air Force, John Orr applied for a career with the Los Angeles Police Department but was rejected due to a psychiatric evaluation that revealed frightening mental and emotional inadequacies that would most certainly put someone like John Orr and those around him at high risk. Nowhere would that psychological profile be more relevant than during his time with the Glendale Fire Department. A rebellious character amongst the rank and file but surprisingly, rising star in his new role as arson sleuth in the newly-formed Fire Investigation Unit. As noted by his peers and family at home, John Orr is quick to plot the cause and origin of every fire scene he attends demonstrating remarkable genius of deduction in front of the media and fellow investigators. However, a devious and menacing alter ego lies dormant within this unassumingly bright and promising public servant. Within John Orr lies a dark persona in the form of a fictitious character “Aaron Stiles,” a firefighter turned serial arsonist in John Orr’s ill-fated novel “Points of Origin.” John Orr’s attempts at getting into character would cost him his career, family and others their lives as malevolent arsons are unleashed throughout Southern California. Numerous documentaries and books chronicle John Orr’s reign of terror: the 2002 HBO film “Point of Origin” starring Ray Liotta as John Orr (Liotta’s best character work), Joseph Wambaugh’s “Fire Lover,” and Ed Nordskog’s “Torchered Minds” a book about the psychology of serial arsonists. The writing is on the wall and the evidence is undeniable for one of history’s most prolific serial arsonists. While others have tried to copy John Orr and claim his morbidly mythic status, i.e., Paul Keller, Seattle’s infamous serial arsonist who was known as “Mister Clean” to the authorities; Paul Keller had a similar psychological profile to Orr but didn’t use incendiary devices. Instead, a simple lighter was his weapon of choice to ignite more than 130 arson fires over a one-year period from 1993-1994. Paul Keller’s blazes injured several firefighters and killed three people. Yet, Paul Keller was a boy scout in comparison to John Orr who was the quintessential Harvard Professor of serial arson. After listening to this book on Audible, Lori Orr Kovach does a fine job chronicling what could only be described as horrifically torturous years for her and her family growing up in the shadow of an abusive, domineering biological father and a reclusive stepfather who hid behind a heroic persona tarnished by a monstrous ego. “The brighter the picture, the darker the negative.” In cases ripped from the headlines like the events described in “Burned: Pyromania, Murder and a Daughter’s Nightmare,” it is often the innocent who suffer the most. The children and spouses of criminals are just as much victims of evil as those whose names end up on the evening news as murder victims. I admire Lori for finally coming forward to tell her side of the story. The most disturbing part of her account was the cold reply from John Orr regarding a letter sent by Lori asking for an explanation to his diabolical acts of arson and murder. The reply is absolutely chilling! “You’ll see how innocent I am when I get out of jail.” It took a lot of courage for Lori to cut the chord for good with John Orr and start a new life for herself. If you’re a fan of Joseph Wambaugh’s “Fire Lover” or Ed Nordskog’s “Torchered Minds,” then “Burned: Pyromania, Murder and a Daughter’s Nightmare” makes for a great companion book. Well worth the time to read or listen. ...more |

The place is New York City, the date, September 11th 1976. In a decade plagued by civil unrest and political upheaval, international terrorism grips the headlines with hijackings and bombings as the modus operandi of radical fundamentalist extremists. The frontline combatants are bomb technicians. Tasked with keeping the peace in “The City That Never Sleeps” are a close-knit band of detectives assigned to the NYPD Bomb Squad. Among them is a young, six-year veteran, Detective Brian J. Murray whose sworn duty is to protect the innocent from one of the most insidious weapons of terror, the Improvised Explosive Device. Ironically, twenty-five years to the day that terror from the sky would change New York and the world forever, Croatian terrorists would hijack an airliner bound for Paris and keep U.S. authorities busy with multiple IEDs planted at Grand Central Station including one hidden in a locker. It is here that fate would call upon Bomb Tech Brian J. Murray and his squad to defuse the volatile situation. As the harrowing drama plays out on national television, Murray’s wife, Kathleen, watches with bated breath as her husband methodically removes devices wrapped in a bomb blanket to the squad’s bomb truck for transport to the demolition range at Rodman’s Neck. Kathleen is blissfully unaware of the explosive turn her life will take over the next hour. Late that night, an unexpected knock at the Murray residence changes Kathleen’s life forever as the bomb squad delivers earth shattering news. At the range, Brian J. Murray was killed and two of his colleagues Hank and Charlie were injured attempting to neutralize the Grand Central locker IED. This shocking news spawned by overwhelming grief triggers a personal crusade for the bomb squad widow to get to the truth of how and why her husband perished, suing the city of New York over a lack of sophisticated equipment for America’s top bomb squad, and embarking on the long path towards forgiveness with one of the hijackers. Now, Kathleen’s emotional journey is chronicled in the 2018 memoir “Life Detonated.” After listening to this book on Audible, I was very impressed with Kathleen’s honest and heartfelt delivery of a very personal and private event that is sadly experienced by innumerable law enforcement widows around the world. Kathleen’s inspiring courage and determination to make a difference in the wake of tragedy, speaks volume to those who share their loved ones with a dangerous and often deadly profession. ...more |

A poignant and viscerally realistic story of a young boy's life-altering experience on the 21st Century's Day of Infamy. In book 6 of the I Survived series, we are introduced to Lucas, the son of a New York firefighter. A friend of Hook & Ladder Company 175, Lucas is at the firehouse on the morning of September 11th. The story captures the fear experienced by millions as two Jet planes slam into the World Trade Center. Lucas is desperate to find his father and learn the fate of his crew as chaos ensues. By day's end, Lucas' life and the world would never be the same again. After listening to this book on Audible, I was impressed with the narrator's delivery and author Lauren Tarshis' actual narration during the epilogue providing a rich timeline and Q&A describing her reasons for writing about such a sensitive, graphic and tragic subject. However, the story's ending was too abrupt. I would have liked to learn more of what the next month was like for Lucas and his family following the attacks. In all, this is a good book for young minds to get their hands on and get helpful perspective on the events of 9/11. ...more |

The year, 1982, the place, Boston, Massachusetts. The city is in the middle of trying political upheaval aimed specifically at its Fire Department: layoffs and closures of several firehouses cause tempers to boil while putting firefighters and the public in harm’s way. Outraged, a brazen gang of arsonists comprised of three police officers, firefighter, dispatcher, security guard, and three others known in public circles as Sparks (photographers and thrill seekers drawn to the excitement of firefighting) instigate a depraved arson campaign. These seemly ordinary but ill-intended American Joes devise an insidious plot to set Bean Town ablaze in one of the most horrific arson sprees in American history. That’s the premise behind the riveting investigative account of “Burn Boston Burn: The Story of the Largest Arson Case in the History of the Country.” Written by renowned ATF arson investigator Wayne Miller, he documents the frightening and extremely frenetic two-year period from 1982 to 1984, when he and a myriad of law enforcement agencies matched wits with nine diabolical agents of chaos who roamed the streets of Boston at will, setting more than 460 blazes, injuring several firefighters. Before Southern California’s John Orr and Seattle’s Paul Keller seared their place in the annals of history as the 20th Century’s most prolific serial arsonists, nine cunning and elusive men re-wrote the arsonist’s cook book spawning malevolent infernos with ingeniously-crafted incendiary devices. Wayne Miller puts the reader into the center of the action. From riding with investigators as they piece together a red-hot jigsaw puzzle, to walking the streets of Boston with the arsonists and thrill seekers themselves, sitting in the interrogation room with suspects and finally, into the courtroom for the climax of the case which stretched authorities to the limit. After listening to this book on Audible, I was very impressed with Mr. Miller’s literary style. If you enjoyed reading or listening to Monica Hesse’s “American Fire: Love, Arson, and Life in a Vanishing Land,” then Wayne Miller’s gripping investigative report “Burn Boston Burn: The Story of the Largest Arson Case in the History of the Country” is worth the time to read or listen. ...more |

“If not me, then who?” That is the solemn sentiment and overriding drive for those who make it their life’s mission to serve their country. For United States Marine Travis Manion and Navy Seal Brendan Looney, that sacred pledge is what motivated them to be a part of the world’s most elite fighting force. West Point roommates and graduates bound together by love and camaraderie, drawn to military service in the wake of the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks, Brendan and Travis vowed to ensure that the atrocities of 9/11 would never happen again. Their kinship would see them through both good times and bad as The War on Terror has them deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. Ironically, Travis Manion and Brendan Looney would be inexplicably linked in life and in death. Now, their story is told in the poignant biography “Brothers Forever: The Enduring Bond Between a Marine and a Navy Seal that Transcended Their Ultimate Sacrifice.” Written by Colonel Tom Manion (United States Marine Corps retired) and co-authored by Tom Sileo, the audience is introduced to a patriotic duo of elite servicemen who are fiercely devoted to their families and their country in the first eight years of America’s War on Terror. “Brothers Forever” goes beyond the media spin and hot button politics of the War on Terror, offering an intimate portrait of the lives of two Blue Star families and the indescribable anguish of losing two valiant men of honor just three years apart from each other in two of the most dangerous places on earth. After listening to this book on Audible, I was very impressed with both authors’ delivery and writing styles. In a time when the noble deeds and sacrifices of America’s heroes are left by the wayside, the steadfast courage and legacies of U.S. Marine Travis Manion and Navy Seal Brendan Looney serves as an inspiration to us all. While an emotional rollercoaster, “Brothers Forever: The Enduring Bond Between a Marine and a Navy Seal that Transcended Their Ultimate Sacrifice” is a must-read or listen. In the streets of 1940’s New York, there lurks an enigmatic killer who prowls the bustling metropolis planting explosives. He is a cunning psychopath who possesses a deadly background in electronics and engineering; skills that in the right hands, would usher in a new age of prosperity, but for New York City’s Mad Bomber, these trades would be put to deadly and terrifying effect in what would be known as sixteen years of terror that rocked The Big Apple to the core. That’s the premise behind the gripping historical account of “Incendiary,” written by Michael Cannell, the reader is taken back in time to the pre-Pearl Harbor era as the city and suburbs of New York are besieged by a series of deadly and disruptive bombings. From 1940 to 1957, New York is held in the vice-like grip of a faceless terrorist bomber known simply as FP. His targets were widely scattered and his aim was eerily similar to that of Ted Kaczynski, the infamous Unabomber. FP’s agenda is anti-government and anti-business, employing simple yet crude devices that maim and kill. The clock is ticking with very few leads and law enforcement is desperate for a swift and proactive solution to stop the carnage. That’s when NYPD Captain Howard Finney, head of the bomb squad, enlists the aid of psychiatrist Dr. Brussel who pioneers a radical and revolutionary technique that would turn the tide and change history. Enter Criminal Profiling; the centerpiece of countless detective thrillers and TV series over the years, before CSI and Criminal Minds, criminal profiling would be put to the ultimate test to defeat New York City’s Mad Bomber. During an exhaustive and frenetic sixteen-year manhunt, with New York’s Finest in hot pursuit, running a gauntlet of bomb calls and scouring blast sites for clues to the Mad Bomber’s identity, it’s a desperate race against time to save lives in a life and death chess game of technology, ingenuity, intelligence and bravery. Before Unabomber Ted Kaczynski took his place in history as America’s most feared serial bomber, George Metesky, New York’s Mad Bomber wrote the book that generations of anarchists and lone wolves would reference for indeterminate campaigns of terror. After listening to this book on Audible, “Incendiary” is as gripping and intriguing as any Hollywood blockbuster or police procedural gets. Author Michael Cannell accomplishes an exceptional literary feat taking the reader on a journey into the mind of the lone wolf serial bomber, the articulate methodology of the Criminal Profiler and the unwavering valor demonstrated by the gallant men of the NYPD bomb squad whose actions in the line of duty saved countless lives during the Mad Bomber’s reign of terror. Sadly, the squad’s courage wasn’t without tremendous cost. Special mention is given to two fallen detectives: Joseph Lynch and Ferdinand Socha who lost their lives downrange on the afternoon of July 4th 1940, at the British Pavilion on the grounds of the World’s Fair in Flushing, Queens, New York while inspecting a suspicious black suitcase containing a time-delay IED. If you’re a fan of police procedurals or just want to check out a real-life detective drama, Michael Cannell’s “Incendiary” is well-worth the time to read or listen. ...more |

Sixty-one years before September 11th 2001, and a year and a half before December 7th 1941, The New York City of Britain would be rocked to the core as an armada of German aerial bombers reigned terror from the night skies over London and across Europe. In September, 1940, London is besieged by fifty-seven consecutive nights of relentless bombardment in the form of massive bombs and unexploded ordnances littering the streets of the United Kingdom’s capitol. At the center of these unprecedented days of infamy, is newly-elected Prime Minister Winston Churchill; a man of few words but unflinching character. Over the next year, he would demonstrate to the British people and to the world that the tenacious nation of Great Britain would not be intimidated nor held hostage by the tyrannical grip of Adolf Hitler. Now, acclaimed author Erik Larson takes the reader, or in my case, the listener, beyond the historical prestige of the iconic and heroic Winston Churchill in the best-selling biography, “The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz.” Here, we explore the very intimate trials and tribulations of Churchill and his family as they contend with history in the making and stand on the verge of World War II in the face of Adolf Hitler’s terrifying onslaught for global domination. In London alone, from September 1940 to 1941, more than twenty-eight thousand men, women and children were murdered along with more than thirty thousand people maimed by the indiscriminate fires and weapons of war. Overwhelmed by horrendous tragedy, surrounded by enemies on all sides, Churchill is determined to stand his moral ground as the battle to reclaim the capitol rages for the next four years. By World War II’s end on May 6th 1945 and Hitler’s suicide, victory is overshadowed by the immense human cost from 1940 to 1945. After listening to this book on Audible, it was an arduous listen but a very enlightening one. Erik Larson does an exceptional job taking the audience back in time to a long and sadly, forgotten era in history where not unlike today, evil marshaled its forces to wage war against the innocent and the defenseless. Fortunately, there was a ray of light in the darkness that shined through in the hearts and actions of millions of brave men and women whom comprised Britain’s military forces and thousands of first responders in cities throughout Europe who held the line as fires burned and deadly explosive devices sat primed to detonate as police and British Army bomb disposal teams labored tirelessly to defuse them. All performed admirably under Winston Churchill’s watchful eye. “The Splendid and the Vile” is a wonderful biographical glimpse into Churchill’s life and legacy, I especially liked listening to the real radio broadcast of his Christmas address in 1941, eighty-two years ago. As someone who toured London and visited the Imperial War Museum, I saw Churchill’s cabinet office and radio room and experienced a visceral simulation of the Blitz in an air raid shelter. I have great respect for those who fought and survived War World II in both the Pacific and European theaters. They are heroes whose courage and sacrifices can never be repaid; only remembered and cherished for generations to come. Erik Larson’s “The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz” is a great book for the entire family to read or listen. ...more |

In a world where apathy and chaos are all-too commonplace, one man embarked on a life-changing journey that would alter television programming and change the world forever. Enter Fred Rogers, one of television’s most influential icons. For nearly half a century, what began as an independent children’s program utilizing puppets and going into the World of Make Believe on the Canadian series “Children’s Corner,” evolved into one of the most beloved educational phenomena in history, “Mister Rogers Neighborhood.” The popular PBS series ran from 1963 to 2001 and spawned more than eight hundred episodes which are still enjoyed by millions of children and parents through syndication on PBS Kids and online. Through his endearing work, Fred Rogers would go on to earn a prestigious Peabody Award, Primetime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997, and induction into the TV Hall of Fame among many accolades throughout his renowned career including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Fred Rogers said during a Primetime Emmy speech: “Fame is a four-letter word, like tape or zoom. What ultimately matters is what we do with it. We have but only one life to live. We can choose to demean this life or we can cherish it in creative and imaginative ways.” In a time when everyone knows your name, Fred was a deeply modest individual who believed, “I have never considered myself a TV star. I always thought I was a neighbor who just came for a visit.” Now, Fred Rogers Family Communications alum Maxwell King goes beyond the magical, child development powerhouse to reveal a deeply personal and in-depth glimpse into the life and legacy of Fred Rogers. Through interviews, oral histories and archival documents, the biography of America’s Favorite Neighbor is finally told eighteen years after Fred Rogers’ sudden passing at the age of 75. With permission from Fred’s wife, Joanne and closest supporters, Maxwell King delivers a profoundly moving and visceral biography in: “The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers.” Growing up watching Mister Rogers and Levar Burton on Reading Rainbow, Fred Rogers was a genuine force of nature. Having seen documentaries such as, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” and the Michael Keaton special “America’s Favorite Neighbor,” there’s a special place in my heart for Fred Rogers. I was lucky to find this book on Audible. Maxwell King does an exemplary job taking the audience into the real world of Mister Rogers Neighborhood. Narrator Levar Burton is perfect to lend his voiceover talent to this exceptional work of art. There’s even a candid interview with Maxwell King discussing the backstory behind writing the book and the many people who made it possible. Fred Rogers would be proud! Rest in Peace Fred Rogers. 1928-2003 ...more |

The place, Atlanta, Georgia. The year is 1996. “The City in the Woods” is the host for the Olympic Games. As millions flock to Atlanta and tune-in around the world, all eyes are on Atlanta’s Centennial Park, the epicenter of the games. Despite some of the most elaborate security measures implemented to ensure public safety, the 1996 Olympic Games will be forever remembered as an indelible event marked by terror and tragedy. That’s the premise behind the biography “The Suspect” by Kent Alexander and Kevin Salwen. The source for the Clint Eastwood film “Richard Jewell;” the authors delve into the backstories of security guard Richard Jewell and a nefariously cunning bomber Eric Rudolph who eluded capture for seven years wandering the Georgia wilderness free to maim and kill. As depicted in the film “Richard Jewell,” the book highlights the horrendous smear campaign launch by the Atlanta Journal Constitutional (AJC) instigated by Cathy Scruggs, a narcissistic, agenda-driven Journalist. The media attention puts Richard Jewell at the center of the investigation. All the while, distracting the FBI and the media from the real culprit, Eric Rudolph. To see my movie blog on Richard Jewell, click below. https://www.goodreads.com/author_blog... After seeing the independent film “Richard Jewell,” I wanted to get my hands on the original source material. Listening to this book on Audible gave me a greater perspective on the real Richard Jewell and the cold-blooded lethality of Eric Rudolph. If you haven’t seen the movie, this book makes for a great precursor to get more in-depth analysis on the 1996 Olympic Centennial Park bombing and the players involved. Well worth the time to read or listen. ...more |

When disaster strikes, there is an elite team of rescuers who will prowl the largest rubble piles, scour demolished buildings and comb flooded cities.
When disaster strikes, there is an elite team of rescuers who will prowl the largest rubble piles, scour demolished buildings and comb flooded cities. Searching for survivors and those lost to man-made or natural disasters; when all hope seems lost, it takes a special breed of heroes to be a beacon of light in the darkness. Meet America’s valiant Urban Search & Rescue Dogs. Comprised of a motley assortment of high energy working breeds, search and rescue dogs and their stalwart handlers are the tip-of-the spear whether it’s a terrorist attack or major disaster. That’s the premise behind the inspiring and emotionally-raw book “Hero Dogs: How a Pack of Rescues, Rejects, and Strays Became America’s Greatest Disaster-Search Partners.” Written by renowned Search & Rescue Dog guru Wilma Melville of the Search Dog Foundation and co-authored by Paul Lobo, “Hero Dogs” chronicles the incredible true story of how one brave and fiercely-determined woman embarked on an odyssey that would change her life and history forever. The story begins interestingly enough at a disaster site in 1995. The place, Oklahoma City. In the wake of one of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil, Wilma Melville and her Disaster Search Dog Murphy are hard at work combing the rubble of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Their mission is righteously straight forward but incredibly daunting: find any live victims buried alive under six stories of concrete, pulverized steel, and exposed rebar. After hours of searching, one man catches Wilma’s eye standing off to the side holding a photo of a loved one in his hands. “Have you found her yet?” He would ask repeatedly day after day; the answer sadly would be “No.” That is the catalyst for a personal crusade that would consume Wilma Melville’s life for the next ten years as the seeds for a robust, superbly-trained and versatile Disaster Search Dog response team are laid. Ready to respond at a moment’s notice to a myriad of natural disasters and terrorist attacks, the California-based Search Dog Foundation (SDF) a non-profit organization that relies solely on generous donations. The SDF spearheads training and procurement of dogs to be partnered with specially-selected handlers from various fire departments across the state of California. Ironically, the main go-to place for promising canine candidates are shelters and local pounds where breeds of all kinds are screened for selection into an elite fraternity of loyal and dependable search and rescue specialists. Ready and willing to go anywhere at anytime across America or even halfway around the world to bring trapped survivors back from the brink of certain death. Even though, the training process to join this elite unit is arduous and unyielding, it isn’t long before very green canine teams are put to the ultimate test. Between the fall of 2001 and the summer of 2005, America’s elite Urban Search & Rescue teams would mobilize for a series of unforgettable national tragedies: the September 11th 2001 terror attacks at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and the 2005 calamities of Hurricanes: Katrina and Rita. The SDF would be working hand-in-hand with firefighters and other gallant rescuers to turn the tide in what would be their darkest and finest hours. Also highlighted, is the foundation’s response to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti’s Port-au-Prince and the amazing rescue of three trapped women buried in their house who were found alive by Wilma’s expertly-trained search dogs. Having seen Wilma interviewed for a segment on Animal Planet in 1997 and participated in a USAR K-9 Workshop at College Station, Texas in 2007, getting to know the caliber of men and women who do this crucial work, I knew I had to get this book, and after listening to it on Audible, I’ve gained a new found respect for those in the USAR K-9 community. “Hero Dogs” is an amazing tale of courage, sacrifice and humanity forged by the love and devotion of America’s Search and Rescue Dogs. ...more |

The year is 1972, the place, Belfast, Northern Ireland. In what has become one of the most explosive places on earth triggered by religious strife between Catholics and Protestants, there is all-out civil war. In the crosshairs are innocent men, women and children. Jean McConville, a 38-year-old mother of ten, is abducted. She puts a human face to “The Troubles,” a more than thirty-year campaign of terror and civil unrest; turning neighbors into enemies and once prosperous towns into war zones. That’s the premise behind the non-fiction account of “Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland.” Investigative Journalist Patrick Radden Keefe goes deep into the volatile political powder keg of Northern Ireland and examines the untold human cost of “The Troubles” in what is still a very sensitive hot button topic for those who endured horrendous hard times. From the surviving McConville children, to the loyal supporters of the Provisional IRA and the political power vacuum between the United Kingdom and the United States, tensions reach critical mass in Northern Ireland. After listening to this book on Audible, I was very impressed with Mr. Keefe’s work and his extensive research over a three-year period gathering the facts from various sources in the United States and Northern Ireland. If you want to go deeper into the root of the conflict, Patrick Radden Keefe’s “Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland” is a must for any historian or reader interested in the history of Northern Ireland. ...more |

Within the cloak and dagger world of geo-political warfare, there exists an elite few sworn to defend their countries interests in the name of national security and survival. Comprised of elements from the CIA and elite Paramilitary units such as Delta Force, these top-secret operatives work in the shadows, far removed from the glaring spotlight of the media. Answering to the President of the United States and Foreign Heads of State, their mission… to get on the ground and eliminate high profile targets before an act of terror or indiscriminate murder can be executed. Now, award-winning Journalist and Author Annie Jacobsen goes behind the scenes for a rare in-depth glimpse into the clandestine realm of a real-life James Bond and Jack Bauer. That’s the premise behind the intriguing Book “Surprise, Kill, Vanish: The Secret History of CIA Paramilitary Armies, Operators and Assassins.” From the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) to the United Kingdom’s Special Office Executive (SOE), Annie Jacobsen delivers a compelling account of covert action during some of the most pivotal moments in history. When the President needs America’s best and brightest to discreetly dispose of some very bad actors, Direct Action is authorized. Operatives deploy anywhere in the world, at any time, conducting their missions with “Plausible Deniability.” In other words, they were never there and more importantly, they don’t exist. Annie Jacobsen goes beyond the stark headlines revealing when bold covert action was the best option versus a full-blown military campaign. From Adolf Hitler to radical revolutionaries like Che Guevara to Libya’s ruthless Dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi, no job is too big for the CIA’s Paramilitary units or the U.S. Army’s Delta Force. Annie Jacobsen even explores the terrifying realm of the professional assassin when a trained killer working for the enemy achieves his deadly objective. From the 1963 John F. Kennedy assassination, the attempted assassination on President Ronald Reagan in 1981, to the Secret Service’s Counter Assault Team (CAT) protecting President Clinton while traveling to Israel against a litany of unknown assassination attempts orchestrated by Islamic Extremists. Former Green Beret and Secret Service Director Lewis Merletti talks candidly about his tenure as Director with his head on a swivel and his brain working in over-drive anticipating the worst-case scenario. Even enlisting the aid of Delta Force who launched a mock raid on the White House to better help the Secret Service rectify weaknesses in their protective bubble. After listening to this book on Audible, I was very impressed with Annie Jacobsen’s literary style and her vocal delivery narrating her book. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to play James Bond or Jack Bauer for real, this book is a must-read or listen for anyone interested in covert clandestine operations behind the headlines and deep behind enemy lines. ...more |

Deep within the evolutionary chain of nature, there lies a dark and foreboding world of diseases, viruses and horrific pathogens ready to unleash global annihilation. While most people go about their everyday lives blissfully unaware of the hidden assassins that have the potential to infect and kill millions around the world, an elite team of military experts and doctors assigned to the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRID) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) are frontline combatants in a war that largely goes unnoticed. That’s the premise behind the best-selling medical chronicle “The Hot Zone: The Terrifying True Story of the Origins of the Ebola Virus.” Here, investigative author Richard Preston goes inside the lethal realm of infectious diseases examining the origins of: Marburg, Ebola Sudan, Ebola Zaire and Ebola Reston. From the notorious HIV ridden jungles and villages of Africa, to the vast airline routes where an unknown carrier of a deadly virus can travel anywhere on the planet accompanied by the threat of infecting millions, one biological serial killer stands above the rest: Ebola. With a ninety percent mortality rate capable of infiltrating the body through touch, bodily fluids and becoming airborne, the stakes have never been higher for the medical community. Richard Preston reveals a chilling account of when Ebola made an unwelcomed stop on U.S. soil in 1989. Enter the town of Reston, Virginia where an animal research facility housing monkeys has potentially deadly patients; Ebola infected primates. The situation demands a swift and proactive response but the work must be done in complete secrecy to avoid panicking the public. That’s where U.S. Army Veterinarians Nancy and Jerry Jaax enter the equation. Husband and wife experts in the field of infectious diseases in animals, cloaked in space-age biological hazard suits, the Jaax, assigned to USAMRID at Fort Detrick, Maryland are the ghostbusters whenever and wherever deadly pathogens or global pandemics threaten human lives. Unlike the movies, when the bell rings for these unsung heroes, they’re fighting an invisible enemy. Working in conjunction with the CDC, military and government officials are in for the mission of their lives as a desperate race against time ensues to prevent a mass extinction event in their own backyard. When Ebola strikes too close to home, science, technology, courage and the grace of God will prove to be the magic bullet in a real-life “Andromeda Strain.” I was fortunate to find this book on Audible, and after listening to it, Richard Preston delivers an intriguing and profoundly-frightening account of a global public health emergency. With National Geographic’s miniseries based on this book coming out on Memorial Day, I wanted to get ahead of it by learning more about what really happened between 1976 and 1989 with the eye-opening events in Africa and Virginia. Richard Preston combines reality with the drama of Michael Crichton’s “Andromeda Strain” and Dustin Hoffman’s 1995 thriller “Outbreak.” Unlike the world of fiction, the events and the people chronicled in Richard Preston’s award-winning book are real and so is the danger and the fear that Mother Nature’s Biological Serial Killer possesses. ...more |
