I don't believe I have ever read a book by this author so I really wasn't sure what to expect with this one. I tend to stay away from any type of angst-type books. I don't like stories that make me feel bleh so I try to stick with the happy (i.e. fluffy) ones...unless I'm stepping out of the romance genre. While this had a sweet love story, it was still emotional in some places. I love how the two main characters, Darryl and Billy, came together. I fell in love with Billy immediately. Everything about him. I liked Darryl a lot. His wanting to protect Billy and the twins was very touching. The twins were adorable. I know how some folks don't like children in books and the "kid speak" annoys some. I, on the other hand, love reading books with children in them if they are written well. I feel that Davey and Donnie were written well. Maybe it's the mom in me but I am one of those who actually looks for books (depending on my mood) that have child characters in them. Again, if written well. Not many authors can pull it off. I'm glad that this one could. I enjoyed the secondary characters though I didn't really get a feel for any of them, with the exception of the twins. I don't understand Sebastian and where the author was going with him. In the beginning it looked as if he was going to be one way and then it turned out that the author went into an entirely different direction. I am not sure how I feel about that. I know that Sebastian is the main character in the second book in the series so I guess I will reserve my judgment on him until I read that one. I shed a few tears while reading this (something I rarely do). For Billy, the twins and even for Darryl, though Darryl's back-story didn't really do it for me. While it was explained (for the most part) I couldn't quite grasp specific things in regards to it. I won't go into the details because it would be too telling, but I will say that I am not sure how I felt about all of that. Mainly when Billy came in later to help him resolve his issues. That was a "huh?" moment that I'm still not sure how I feel about. Overall a good book. I am glad the author added an Epilogue because it showed that the HEA wasn't just a HFN, in regards to not just Darryl and Billy but the twins as well. I look forward to reading the others in the series and other books by Andrew Grey. **spoiler alert** I totally loved this book....... was thinking this was going to go on my favorites shelf. Then it went downhill fast, around the 50 or 60% mark I guess. It started out good. Flynn (a drifter) accepts a position at Gable's ranch. While the ages of the two were never mentioned (I don't think) it was stated many times throughout the book that Gable was old enough to be Flynn's dad. Gable had suffered a serious accident in the past, though I'm also thinking the time lapse between the accident wasn't mentioned either. It may have been and I missed it. There is instant attraction between the two men but neither is in a hurry to act on it for various reasons. I loved watching them come together as a couple. There was a lot of talk about Gable's ex, Grant. None of it flattering. Grant is described as a cruel, cheating bastard who disappeared after Gable's accident. A manly man who was deeply in the closet and would brag about sleeping with one woman after another in front of Gable while they were together. A total jerk. Then there is Calley, Gable's so-called best friend. I had a hard time even in the beginning liking her but then that dislike turned into total disgust. I totally hated her character completely by the time I got to the end of the book. So what made me go from wanting to give this book 5 stars to totally hating it? First it was when Grant came back into the picture. Though it took a little while, he was forgiven for what he did to Gable. Not only forgiven but became FRIENDS with Flynn and Gabe. Huh? I understand forgiveness but please. That so would not happen in the real world. Not in mine anyway. Now Calley. Calley is Gable's best friend...... supposedly. It is hinted throughout the book that there was some type of history between Calley and Gabe that went beyond basic friendship. Also, Gabe is in the hospital after almost dying as a result of his past injury and Grant shows up and Calley is all buddy buddy with him..... even after knowing what he did to Gabe in the past. Then she tells Flynn "I can't choose sides." Well yeah, you do. You stick by your friend (BEST friend) when you see someone hurt him/her. That was the beginning of my dislike for her. Then later it comes out that Calley had had an affair with Grant while Gabe and Grant were together. Oh and she's married at the time. Not only does she cheat on her husband but she cheats WITH her best friend's lover? And Gabe accepted that and STAYED her best friend? Not just cheated but got pregnant with the man's baby, which she later lost. And then later Gabe donates his sperm so that she could have the baby she wanted so badly? Even after all she did to him? Some best friend. That totally killed it for me. Also, there was a lot of talk about Flynn not getting along with his father and having to leave his family yet nothing was explained. It was just mentioned in passing. Considering that Flynn was basically the only character I liked, I would have liked to have seen his story explained more. I didn't understand the point of the 4 men donating sperm for Calley to have a baby. Not only was all of that just weird, it made no sense that Calley's husband would go along with the man she had had an affair with (Grant) being one of the donors. The author took an excellent story..... and it WAS an excellent story....... and totally killed it with the Calley and Grant thing. I see that Grant and Hunter have their story after this. I can't see where anything would make me like Grant after this book so I'm thinking I will definitely take a pass on the sequel. I'm glad this was a freebie from the publisher. I am REALLY glad I didn't pay for this. I like the author. I have read other books by her that I liked. And as I said, I DID like this one. Until it took such a strange turn. I am huge fan of friends-to-lovers stories if they are written right. Not only was this one written right, it now ranks up there as one of my favorite friends-to-lovers stories ever. Bailey is a genius scientist who was publicly disgraced when his former employers used his work in the wrong way. He is humiliated and vilified by the science community. He is pushing 40, balding and slightly pudgy (as he describes himself). His friend, John, hires him as an editor for his small science magazine. John somehow talks Bailey into writing an astrology column for the magazine. The only way Bailey will agree to it is if his name is in no way associated with the column (he says... constantly... in a hilarious way that astrology is bogus) and if he can write op-ed articles calling out and criticizing others in the science community. Surprisingly the astrology column becomes very popular because of it's accuracy. Of course, Bailey still claims it's totally fake. So John sets it up where Bailey will have to go on 12 dates with 12 different people and cover all of the individual star signs. Bailey has no clue who the dates will be with or what their sign is. At the end of the experiment (that is also a bet between John and Bailey) they will compare notes and see how accurate it really is. The dates were a blast. Some of them had me cracking up. And Bailey is so damn funny. His superiority over everyone...... he tells everyone constantly that he is so much smarter than them..... could have made me dislike his character but it had the opposite effect. He was hilarious. John and all the secondary characters (Lauren for one... loved her!) accepted Bailey's eccentricities and went along with it even when it annoyed the hell out of them. John and Bailey each have feelings for each other. Neither will act on it or let the other one know because they are scared that it will destroy a good friendship. And trust me, Bailey is not a very likable guy so he wants to keep whatever friends he has. We (the readers) know how they feel about each other. They on the other hand are totally clueless. It was awesome watching as they finally get it. It takes awhile but they definitely get there and the way it happens is totally perfect. I loved Bailey. John is the ultimate in patience. Lauren (John's assistant) is a great secondary character. She had me laughing a lot. Be prepared... Bailey has sex with others. This is long before he and John finally figure things out between the two of them... way before they have any kind of relationship other than friendship. I know a lot of folks are bothered by that so I am just pointing it out as others have. This actually helps the story. If you read it you'll know what I mean. This is my first by this author and it definitely will not be my last. Merged review: I am huge fan of friends-to-lovers stories if they are written right. Christian gets dumped the day before he and his lover (Andrew) were supposed to go on a 3 week holiday. He's drowning his sorrows when the loser ex's best friend (Trip) shows up at the pub and somehow gets himself invited to go on the holiday with Christian. Okay, there's your story. You know what's going to happen from there. They spend 3 weeks together and then later on have their HEA. There are 3 or 4 things that are pretty much game-over for me in a book. This had one of them and it came out only a few pages in. I'm not sure why I continued reading but I did. Neither of the main characters are likable in my opinion. Their whatever it was seemed to work somehow though. I personally did not enjoy watching them get to that point. (view spoiler)[The entire book is about cheating. Andrew cheats on Christian with his ex wife and dumps Christian for her. Christian is getting drunk when Trip walks into the bar and they end up drunkenly planning the 3 week vacation together. Of course they sleep together pretty quickly once they get to Italy.. their vacation destination. It comes out very early on that not only did Andrew cheat with his ex wife but he also cheated on Christian with TRIP the entire time they were together. So there's Trip in Italy trying to get close to Christian as he mourns the loss of his relationship with Andrew. Trip never felt any guilt in regards to being the "other man" in the relationship. When Christian is told about the relationship he gives in much too easy. There is no drama at all in regards to it and he simply lets it go and then jumps back in bed with Trip like it's no big deal. HUH? Christian is a wimp and Trip is a cheating bastard. I liked the first 10% of the book and then it went down hill from there. There was no recovering from that. If I dislike the main characters I'm not going to like the story. I couldn't stand either main character so it killed the story completely.(hide spoiler)] I only read this because there is another book that I'm interested in by this author (these authors) and I wanted to get the idea of the writing style. The book I'm interested in is pretty serious and this one was supposed to be light. I'm not sure I'll be reading the other book now. I may but it's up in the air after reading this. Most definitely not my thing. Merged review: Christian gets dumped the day before he and his lover (Andrew) were supposed to go on a 3 week holiday. Great continuation of Josh, Nick and Daniel's story. They were first introduced in "His Christmas Wish," the first in the Men of Charleston series. I'm normally not big on series that center on the same couple throughout. But this one is an exception. Shiloh's story was number two in "Yummy Indulgences" so it's not like all three books were centered on this one little family. I fell in love with Daniel in the first story and loved him even more after this one. The same applies to his Uncle Josh and Nick. As with all of this author's books that I have read, this one doesn't have a lot of drama or misunderstandings. The book starts off with Daniel involved in a homophobic incident at school but this is quickly resolved. It was heartbreaking, sure, but it only lasts for a few pages. The rest of the story is like her others.... very sweet and happy. I've enjoyed this series and I have enjoyed another one by this author. Sometimes it's nice to be able to sit down and know when you are going into a book that it won't be full of a bunch of angst or silly misunderstandings. These books are sweet and the love story is sweet. Not just between Josh and Nick but with Daniel as well. Another good read by Andi Anderson. I am such a sucker for books with kids in them if the kids are written right. Daniel was perfect. Daniel goes to live with his Uncle Josh (his mom's brother) after the death of his parents. For over a year Josh does what he can but he always feels as if he is failing Daniel somehow. Daniel, sad because he wants him and Uncle Josh to be happy again, makes a wish to God and to his parents. He wishes for a family. He loves his Uncle Josh but wants more... maybe someone to share their little world. His wish comes true when Josh hires Nick as a live-in nanny. There is instant attraction between the two but they hold off on acting on it. But when they do it is so sweet. Sure, once they kiss the first time everything happens pretty fast. They get close pretty quick... fall in love pretty quick and decide on forever pretty quick. But it works because of the length of the story. Sweet story with a sweet ending. Another really good one by this author. Merged review: I am such a sucker for books with kids in them if the kids are written right. Daniel was perfect. This is the second in the "Men of Charleston" series. Shiloh is the co-owner (with his sister) of Yummy Indulgences, a bakery, and was introduced briefly in the first book of the series "His Christmas Wish". He is out and proud and has the rainbow flag outside his shop to prove it. Allen works at a rendering plant and is only out to his family. His co-workers are homophobic bastards so he is careful to keep his sexuality to himself at work. Allen is pushed by his sister (Megan) into going into Yummy Indulgences to pick out and order a cake for their parents upcoming 40th anniversary party. Allen does it grudgingly. The minute he meets Shiloh everything changes. Instant attraction between the two. With the short length of this story, you know going in that everything is going to happen pretty fast. While the relationship progresses nicely, the feelings between Shiloh and Allen happen quickly. While it kind of has the feel of insta-love that rarely works in stories (in my opinion) the relationship is allowed to play out a bit before the words are actually spoken. There is really no conflict in this at all with the exception of the jerks who work with Allen. That particular part of the story was resolved rather (too) quickly. Shiloh and Allen are simply sweet... sometimes too sweet. I find myself using that word a lot to describe this author's books... sweet (that is not a bad thing). The story was nice. The characters were perfect. I am very happy with the way it ended. This is my third of hers (so far) and in each there are a ton of sweet and "aww!" moments. I really liked this with the exception of a couple of minor things that were easy to overlook. I can't wait to read the third one in the series. I look forward to seeing what else happens with Josh, Nick and Daniel. Merged review: Another sweet love story by Andi Anderson. This is the second in the "Men of Charleston" series. Not to mention that the stories were simply too predictable. This was so not like the others I've read. This was recommended to me by a new friend who knew that I needed something light after a fiasco of a book I read yesterday. This was absolutely perfect. The characters are perfect. The story line is perfect. No whiny female getting on my nerves to the point where I wanted to stop reading midway through. All of the characters, whether they are main or secondary, are strong. There's the bad guy (and his cronies) who were perfect. I didn't get bogged down with a bunch of b.s. page filling details that were not necessary to the story. Everything played out exactly as it should. This is an excellent beginning of a new series (and a new author) for me. I totally loved it and can't wait to read Julian's story (who I totally love) soon. Now I must go and read the stories that occurred before this one to see how those characters (secondary in this one) got started. Great book. Seven years earlier, Jase woke up on a park bench with no knowledge of how he got there or of even who he was. The only hint was a tattoo of the number 40 on his arm. He finds out later that he has special abilities and in order to regain his memories he must save 40 people using those abilities. Lucas works for Child Protective Services and goes to a home to retrieve a child, Macy, who witnessed the murder of her parents. Macy is the 40th person that Jase must save. Working together, Jase and Lucas must protect Macy from those who try persistently to harm her. When she is kidnapped, they are in a race against time to find the little girl and those who murdered her parents. This is a very unique book with very unique characters. While I would have liked to have gotten a couple of answers in regards to why certain things happened, this did not detract from my love of the story as a whole. The resolution shocked me... in a good way. I can honestly say I did not see that coming. Overall, an excellent book. I highly recommend it. Full review can be found atOn Top Down Under Book Reviews. I am a big fan of this author. I've read several of her books and have enjoyed them all. This series seems to be highly recommended but for some reason I shied away from it until now. The first half of the book was amazing. Watching Cooper and Shawn as they got to know each other and as their relationship grew. I absolutely loved it. The second half? Not so much. While I understand that Jordan is a major part of who Cooper is and what made his character the way it is, I could not warm up to Jordan at all. I didn't like him from the very beginning and as the story went on I liked him even less. I enjoyed the book until he came into the picture. The story was fine. The plot was fine. The two main characters were fine. But Jordan and the other secondary characters pretty much killed it for me. Especially Stan. Is there a more annoying character? I see that Jordan's story is the next one in the series. I know that I will read it eventually but I'm thinking it won't be an immediate go-to for my next read. I can't exactly pinpoint what it is about his character that I disliked so much. Doesn't matter. I just know that I'm not that eager to jump into his story. Shawn and Cooper were amazing, especially Shawn. I totally fell in love with his character and would have loved to have read more about him and his life. Overall a good book, as always by this author. Merged review: I am a big fan of this author. I've read several of her books and have enjoyed them all. This was almost a DNF for me. I'm not talking 50% in. I almost put it down at around the 20% mark. I read other reviews before I started this, as is my habit. I decided to read it anyway and then I kept going. My fault, of course, because I saw what others had to say before I ever bought the book. Mason has been in love with his brother's best friend (Jack) for ten years, since he was 16. Jack is straight (he thinks). After loving Jack secretly and watching him bring various women to family gatherings over the years, Mason makes a decision to move across the country to finish getting his college degree. The plan is to get as far away from Jack as possible so that he can try to get over him and finally move on with his life. That was really good. Mason tells his mother during a family gathering that he's moving. He goes to leave a little later and is confronted by Jack. Instead of allowing Mason to explain things (without giving away his secret crush), Jack basically attacks him and treats him like a child. Hello...? Mason is a year away from his PhD in Psychology and 26 years old. He's not a child. I was able to get over the fact that Jack was a complete jerk. That is part of the story in the beginning... I get that. I also get that Mason has always acted like an immature child every time he's been around Jack. So all of that was easy to let go. It was from that point on that it went completely downhill. I'll start with the dialogue. Any time I read a book that is laden with exclamation points I feel as if I am reading a children's book or the diary of a teenage girl. That drives mecrazy. The sentence structure was way off. Terms and expressions were used that would never be used in the real world by adults.... or even by teenagers to be honest (I've raised three and have never heard them talk like this). Mason is in college, a year away from getting his PhD. He supposedly has a very close relationship with his family yet his brother has no clue what he is doing in college. He just assumes he is goofing off because he has been in school for so many years. I didn't like the brother in the beginning and disliked him even more by the time I got to the end of the book. Most of the book is about Mason trying to convince his family that he is a grown man and does not need to be babied or treated like a child. The more I read the more I saw that all he did was act like a child. There were times that I had to keep reminding myself that this character is supposed to be 26-years old. He acted like a 12-year old. And seriously... nobody is that naive. Not one time did he come across as the adult that he is supposed to be.(view spoiler)[He gets a call in the middle of the night from a bartender asking him to come pick up Jack, who is drunk. Mason picks him up from the bar and takes him back to his (Jack's) place. He leans in to kiss Jack while he is passed out and Jack pulls him down and kisses him. One ends up getting a blowjob. Mason crawls naked in bed with him and stays the night. Did I mention that Jack was totally wasted? Jack wakes up freaking out and Mason acts like a big baby. The guy is drunk... you basically took advantage of him while he was in that state... and you get upset when he freaks? Mason then takes off and leaves for his trip across the country early because of Jack's actions. He goes on a 4-day bender and doesn't remember anything beyond that first bottle of Tequila. Uh huh.(hide spoiler)] Jack is a total jerk from the very beginning. It's hard to even pretend to like a book if you dislike both main characters the entire time. Jack is domineering and mean. He allows Mason to make no decisions on his own and if he dares to try, Jack screams and pouts like a big baby. I liked some of the secondary characters. Cooper and his friends were all pretty good. Cooper is still pining for his long lost love who abandoned him 10 years ago (there's something about the "10 year" thing). This long lost love is Alec, who conveniently appears later in the book. One thing happened that is always automatic game over for me when it comes to any book.(view spoiler)[What the hell was the point of the menage between Jack, Mason and Cooper?(hide spoiler)]I decided to continue reading after that even though it was absolutely one of the dumbest things the author could throw in, especially considering the book isn't that great anyway. Let's just add to it so that folks will like it even less. I don't understand what she was thinking but then again, it's not my place to. It was out of place and made a really bad book a really horrible book. That's my opinion anyway. There is a bad guy of course. A bad guy who suddenly just has to have Mason after one meeting on a dance floor. That story did not play out well. Mason did not handle it the correct way.(view spoiler)[He comes home to a destroyed apartment. Instead of calling his cop friend who had just dropped him off, let's show up at the parents house but just cry and hide in your room instead of telling someone what has happened. Oh, and before this, he and Jack had a huge argument and Mason walked and walked and walked and doesn't remember anything of the hours he was walking. Jack of course shows up at the parents house to try to fix things with Mason, still with no clue of what had happened at Mason's apartment. It takes forever for that to come out by the way. Oh, and later Cooper... Mason's best friend...... is kidnapped by the bad guy. So what does Mason and Jack do? Have sex, of course. Yeah, that showed all kinds of concern for the kidnapped friend.(hide spoiler)] I think I need to stop here. I could seriously go on and on about what I did not like about this. I've already said too much. I really hate writing bad reviews. I almost just left this one alone without saying anything. I couldn't. While I am kind of interested in Cooper and Alec's story, I am not sure I can do this again. Merged review: This was almost a DNF for me. I'm not talking 50% in. I really liked this. Sure it was totally unrealistic. I mean seriously... Eric dumps Brock nine years earlier because he felt that Brock didn't want what he wanted, a family. Eric adopts Josie 6 years later. She is now 3. She is kidnapped and suddenly Eric shows up in Brock's life again... 9 years later. Of course Brock drops everything to help his old lover. No anger over Eric's disappearing act 9 years earlier. No bitterness over Eric just walking away from what apparently was a really good relationship. No real questions about it really. Brock just moves Brock and Josie into his home to protect them after Josie is rescued. Eric is injured pretty severely and Josie is basically dumped in Brock's lap. Not only that but Eric had made Brock Josie's legal guardian years earlier in order to keep his psycho mother away from her in the event something happened to Eric. Not just made him legal guardian but had spun fairy tales to Josie about their "guardian angel" Bee (Brock). That was a little (a lot) on the presumptuous side. What if Brock had not been single? What if he didn't WANT the responsibility of a child? What if he was totally and completely over Eric? As I said, it was 9 years after the break up. Luckily it wasn't like that. Brock accepted Eric and Josie with open arms. He protected them and he made it very clear that he was and had always been in love with Eric. I think what I liked the most about this book was that there wasn't a bunch of going back and forth between Eric and Brock. No fights. No major disagreements. All of that was with the people who were trying to harm Eric. When I read a book I normally want at least some type of back and forth between the two main characters. But sometimes it's refreshing to read something that is part of a bigger picture. In this case it's Josie and protecting her and Eric. The story came together well. I like how everything was resolved at the end. I have read quite a few Sean Michael books, though none of his series. They have been hit or miss for me, one of which I couldn't even rate. This is my 2nd in a week and each has received 5 stars. Apparently I've been picking the wrong books. Maybe I will start on one of his series soon. I really enjoy his writing style. I look forward to starting on the next one. Merged review: I really liked this. **spoiler alert** I liked the story okay. I like how Elijah and Kirk met. But I did NOT like Kirk at all. He started out fine. He has a secret crush on Elijah, a fellow passenger on a bus. Elijah doesn't seem to notice Kirk at all. The bus is involved in a serious accident and Kirk helps Elijah. They both go in the hospital and there is a misunderstanding and Kirk believes that Elijah's injuries are worse than they actually are. He soon finds out otherwise. All of that was good. Really good. At that point I really liked both characters. Elijah is shy, unassuming. A nerd, as Kirk describes him. Kirk is pretty straightforward but not enough to speak to Elijah on the bus until the accident. They finally get together after weeks of Kirk wanting Elijah. And what happens? Kirk turns into a jerk. They have sex and Kirk doesn't bother calling him in the days following. Elijah calls him only to find out that Kirk is on a date with another man. That pretty much blew it for me as far as Kirk is concerned. Kirk's excuse? He had made the date before he and Elijah hooked up or something but didn't bother to cancel it afterward. That killed it for me. And then sweet, unassuming... dying for someone to love him... Elijah accepts Kirk's lame excuse and all is well. That did not sit well with me. I have read a few others by this author that I have liked fine.... one I actually loved. This one just did not work for me. I will not allow my opinion of this to keep me from reading the others in the series or others by this author. After seeing Toby in this one, I look forward to his story. Merged review: I liked the story okay. I like how Elijah and Kirk met. But I did NOT like Kirk at all. He started out fine. I am not going to go into a long, drawn out description of what the book is about. The blurb and others have done that better than I could. But I will say that I totally loved this. Watching everything play out between Tim and Matt was a blast. Matt is such a klutz and so adorable. Tim is so funny about the way he is about his life and those around him. I really liked watching him come into his own. His family is hilarious, especially his crazy, overbearing mother. Everything came together so well and the ending was perfect. Great characters, both main and secondary. Overall a great book. Merged review: 4.5 Stars What a fun story! I am not going to go into a long, drawn out description of what the book is about. I love friends to lover stories so I thought this one would be my type of story. It started out well. Rafferty and Nick are both cops. They have been partners and best friends for 4 years. Nick is gay though Raff doesn't know this. Nick is also secretly in love with Rafferty. Rafferty is straight and has just ended a miserable 5 year marriage. Once his divorce is final he starts seeing Nick in a new light. They get together and go out on Rafferty's boat for the weekend, something they have done many times in the past. Neither knows what the other is feeling. I love everything that happened on the boat. The way they finally worked up to that was pretty awesome. I loved both main characters at that time. Then they come home and Raff turns jerk. While I can understand his fear and confusion, I did not like the way he handled those feelings when it came to Nick. Nick has been his best friend for 4 years and he turns his back on him. Nick had already confessed his feelings at that point so to simply turn wuss and not even allow a conversation made him out to be an even bigger jerk. No thought or feelings in regards to what he is doing to Nick or what Nick is feeling. It was a good story and I'm not sorry I read it, but I had a hard time getting beyond Raff's attitude. I felt that the ending was quite rushed (I'm not talking about the sex part... the emotional part). I felt that the story behind Nick leaving Boston was thrown in as an afterthought. I would have liked to have seen more character development between the two. Also, an epilogue would have been nice to see what happens after. The entire story was centered on Rafferty's fear but there is no explanation for what happens later. Merged review: I love friends to lover stories so I thought this one would be my type of story.
