While I normally do not rate books based on the character of the author, given that this book is centered on mental illness and that the author has repeatedly used her mental illness in order to pull the victim card and blame others for the consequences of her own actions, giving it a high rating puts a bad taste in my mouth as she has displayed a consistent behavior of using her mental illness as a weapon to harm other people and as a shield from accountability. And as someone who deals with mental illness myself, I find it incredibly disrepectful, harmful, and ableist for her to perpetuate the idea that mental illness equals bad behavior and lack of trustworthiness that should always be excused.
Discourse surrounding mental illness should always serve as both an exposé on its harsh realities as well as a call to action to either treat them properly or embrace those who experience it. And while this book arguably delivers on the former, it fails on the latter. Discussions on mental illness should never be used to take advantage of or exploit other people and the author has repeatedly shown a pattern of doing just that....more

This was pretty good. I struggled with figuring out the rhythm since I didn't have the audiobook, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The social commentary on religion and sexuality was noteworthy, but the resolution to the story felt rather abrupt. I liked this enough to appreciate it for what it is, but I don't know that I am interested in reading more of Acevedo's work, or novels in verse for that matter....more
