It felt like it could use some filling in, like chunks of the story were missing and the flaw was not seamless. ‣ I couldn't get a clear image of the supernatural world, of the sirens and the fae and the Bargainer himself, everything was rather muddy. ‣ I have developed a strong aversion to fae mates, courtesy ofA Court of Mist and Fury,so the eye-rollings were inevitable (though not due to Laura Thalassa's fault). ‣ Callie was not an easy character to root for, mainly because I couldn't understand her decisions. The Bargainer, on the other hand, was as alluring as they come, but there are still many secrets about him and I don't think I have the patience to uncover them. ‣ The plot was very intriguing, and it was wonderfully interlaced with the romance. ‣ The chemistry between present Callie and the Bargainer was extraordinary. However, their connection when she was a teen was a tad unsettling, given than the Bargainer is (we pressume) an ancieng being. ‣ Iseehow talented Laura Thalassa is, but I can'tloveher stories, even though I want to. ...more |

[image] Listen up, folks.Seventh Bornis definitely neither a miracle nor a flawless piece of art. One of my biggest pet peeves (aside from love triangles, instalovetriangles, love squares and every other variation of love geometry) is thelack of solid worldbuilding, and in this case there was zero. Zilch. Nada. Rien. There were also some things about seventhborns, their power and the hatred towards them that werefuzzyto say the least, and Sera was your typicalact first-think of consequences laterYA heroine. I am sure you're perplexed by now, but there are some serious reasons to grabSeventh Born, since it wasan utterly fun and addictive ride. ✔️ Professor Nikolai Barrington ✔️ Witchling Academy ✔️ Mystery ✔️ Magic ✔️ Barrington ✔️ Gruesome murders ✔️ Necromancy ✔️ Slow burn romance ✔️ Dangerous cult ✔️ Cute supernatural pet ✔️ BARRINGTON “Safety, companionship, and adventure with the possibility of blood, murder, and death, all the while investigating love.” Monica Sanzinadvertently (or not so much?) described her novel in the above sentence.Seventh Bornemanatesa sinister vibe, coated in mist, smoke, and scars, smelling of burning flesh and sulfur, touching forbidden aspects of magic. It's the story of a seventhborn, a pariah constantly bullied because of her birth order and things out of her control; about a girl who wishes nothing but to become an investigator and find her family, and is brought one step closer to her goal when her moody and brooding professor asks her help in order to solve some mysterious deaths. Their research will bring them to dangerous paths that will uncover secrets that may shake their beliefs to the core, but they cannot stop, or else more bodies will pile up. And Sera might be one of them. “There would always be monsters to find.” And oh my, this novel was full of monsters of all kinds. Most of them were human, embracing cruelty over compassion, power over gentleness, prejudice over justice. And you simply wanted to wear a cape, shed your glasses and defend Sera and all those unfortunate souls like her. But enough with the somber tone, let's focus on other aspects of the story. Namely, Barrington. [image] The boorish professor clad in black is definitely made of book boyfriend material. That is if you like your book boyfriends shady, mysterious and dangerous but also big softies when it comes to all the things that matter. I loved how he respected Sera, gave her space and time and treated her like a partner (most of the times). There was swooning involved, which arised out of simple gestures and light touches. Setting Barrington aside, the writing flow was fluid, and thecombination of crime, suspense and magic made it difficult to put it down.Mind, though, that there are aspects of the lore that will left you confused, and questions about the world outside the Academy that will not be answered, cueminor frustration. In my case, though, these deficiencies, albeit important, did not deter me from savoring all the things that were done right.Seventh Bornis a delicious lil' candy waiting to be relished, and I had a great time doing so! *ARC generously provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review* Note: The quotes used in this review are from an uncorrected text and subject to changes. Sparrow, Oregon. 1823. TheLady Astorarrives in the gloomy town of Sparrow, carrying the Swan sisters. Exotic, elegant and sensual, Marguerite, Aurora and Hazel Swan rattle the foundations of the close-knit society with their numerous dalliances and scandalous affairs with men that are not available. Whispers about potions and hexes become cries and screams, and the town of Sparrow finds them guilty of witchcraft in a desperate attempt to defend all those innocent citizens the amoral sisters seduced. And so, on summer solstice, they drown them. “We wait for death. We hold our breath. We know it's coming, and still we flinch when it claws at our throats and pulls us under.” Sparrow, Oregon. Present Day. In the small town of two thousand and twenty four inhabitans, nothing interesting happens. Well, almost nothing; on the first day of June comes the singing, signaling the beginning of the Swan Season. Each year the three wrongfully murdered sisters claim the bodies of three girls, taking control of them. Then the drownings begin. And so does the distrust, and the witch hunt. It's on the eve of the Swan Season that Penny Talbot meets Bo, a strange boy with ghosts in his eyes. Together, they try to stop the Swan sisters before the town mourns once more the loss of young life. But Bo and Penny are tethered to the haunting of the Swan sisters in fundamental ways, and stopping the killings might have fatal consequences to them both. I readThe Wicked Deepone of those days. The days in need for a forgetful cake to wipe away the sour taste of disappointment and discomfort from my mouth. Using a note reminding me to take delivery of a certificate from the Court of First Instance as a bookmark, a turmoil of unpleasant thoughts and emotions raging inside me, I dived into its wicked, deep waters, I tasted the salt of the sea, I stood in the rain while waterdrops cascaded my face and soaked my clothes, I felt the chill piercing my skin, reaching to the marrow. And I smiled. Its haunted pages reflected my dark mood, and I relished all those moments laden in mystery, danger and heartache. The Wicked Deepwas the answer to my silent pleas. “Love is an enchantress—devious and wild. It sneaks up behind you, soft and gentle and quiet, just before it slits your throat.” Shea Ernshawis also an enchantress. While her debut was spooky, it had a fairytalish vibe I found deeply endearing, like coming home after a long day.Her writing hada nostalgic spark of magicthat illuminated everything in blue and grey shades, depicting the emotional state and the secrets of her heroes. Sharing tidbits of the past during the unfolding of the current events, she eventually shed light on the tragedy that took place all those years ago in a cursed town that paid the price of the cruelty and ignorance of its inhabitants. It was not a happy story. It was soaked in revenge, fear, and something more. The desperate need to belong, and shape a future of your own. Penny and Bo were two equally tormented characters that managed to speak to me. Their connection was depicted in a sweet, heart-warming manner that was a ray of sunlight in this bleak and dreary town. “I once read a poem about love being fragile, as thin as glass and easily broken. But that is not the kind of love that survives in a place like this. It must be hardy and enduring. It must have grit.” The reason I didn't give the fifth star to a novel I devoured is rather complicated. I figured out the plot twist pretty soon, and, while it was brilliant, a part of me wishes it would never happen, because it messed up my feelings, and left me with a bitter taste after I finished it. But, like I said before, this story wasn't meant to be happy. It was a peculiar mix of water and sun, warmth and cold, and I can't help but admit that the ending was oddly fitting. The truth remains thatThe Wicked Deepis a splendid debut I highly recommend! Review also posted on BookNest! ...more |

This is the first step towards your doom. [image] ➸IFyou were weak like me and gave in to the temptress called Cover, you must be prepared to shut your moral compass. That is necessary if you do not wish to spend your entire reading experience hearing the voices in your head screaming error.404.this.is.not.right. ➸ACCEPTthat you WILL NOT dive into a dark, paranormal, heart-pounding adventure. That your eyes will feast on apocalypse smut, that the world will literally burn but the heroine will be busy gawking at the sculpted abs of the human incubator of plague and judging the people who try to kill him in order to save their families and, you know, MANKIND. ➸TRYnot to cringe every time Sara calls Pestilence well, Pestilence, even in their, ehem, intimate moments. (wait, scratch that, it cannot be implemented) ➸SITback and *sigh* This is wrong on so many levels. [image] If you follow my reviews, you must have known by now thatI don't do 2 stars.I've always stood for the idea that authors expose themselves when they publish a book, because willingly or not they pour a part of their souls into their works, so 3 stars has been my lowest rating, out of (maybe misguided, maybe not) respect. But this time, I couldn't help myself. It's not becauseLaura Thalassais a bad writer; on the contrary,I enjoyed her prose in general, and liked thesarcasmthat laced her narration, so this is by no means an attack to her talent, or the author herself. I also know, taking into consideration the average rating of this book, that I expressa highly unpopular opinion, without intending to offend all those readers that enjoyedPestilence. The truth is, I envy them. The blame for not likingPestilenceis all mine, since I knew it was about theunlikely romance between a human and the first of the Four Horsemen, thus being aware that the line between right and wrong would be blurry. But guys, the way the main heroine, Sara, perceives things is allmessed up. Let me give you an example: the last time Sara (who was taken captive by Pestilence) and Pestilence entered a big city, riding his undead stallion, the citizens had set up an ambush, resulting to Pestilence being gravely injured (note that he cannot be killed). So, the next time they approach a big city, Sara wants to get off the main road, because: a) she wants to spare the people that didn't evacuate from a horrible, painful death b) she's afraid she might be killed in the ambush c) she doesn't want undying Pestilence to get hurt And yes, Sara goes for option c). I suspect she wanted them to throw Pestilence a welcome party as a thank you for, you know, exterminating human race. Don't get me wrong, along the way they encountered some really nasty people who committed atrocities against them, and I do not condone that. However, Sara was present when children and sweet elderly people died because of Pestilence, when children lost mothers to plague and parents lost their children when Pestilence commandeered their homes in order for Sara to eat their food (!) and rest (!), something Sara gradually came to accept. I am sorry, but this isbeyond disturbing. [image] One could say that the whole point of this book is to show that Pestilence came to understand humanity and found compassion through the power of luuve, to depict Sara's inner battle etc. I beg to differ. I don't blame Pestilence for his nature (even though, to be honest, he was able to spare people but he did so only for the hot chick he encountered),I blame Sara for her tolerance.Pestilence tortured her, abused her, made her suffer again and again, and she stood by his side when he spread death and mourning, getting angry at the people who tried to stop him. Sadly, this f!cked up relationship was not my only issue. The entire book consists of the same routine: Pestilence and Sara travel on horseback, they find some poor fellow's house to rest, and once in a while they encounter desperate people trying to stop them. It eventually got really tedious, it felt like I witnessed the same events again and again. *another sigh* To sum up,Pestilencewas not the book for me. BookNest|Instagram ...more |

[image] I am familiar withAmanda Hocking's work, since her Trylle Trilogy and Kanin Chronicles hold a special place in my heart. That is why it saddens me to no end to admit thatBetween the Blade and the Heartwasa big miss for me. Between the Blade and the Heartis the first book of a duology based onnorse mythology. The world is divided between Mortals and Immortals; Mortals have a short lifespan, but they can determine their own fate, whereas Ιmmortals live forever, but their path is set in stone, and fundamental choices about their nature do not belong to them. In order to maintain the balance, the gods created the Valkyries, mortals bestowed with supernatutal strength and abilities, assigned to murder immortals and return them to the Underworld. Malin is a Valkyrie in training, but when she discovers a horrible truth about her mother's past, she becomes a pawn to a conspiracy set into motion hundreds of years ago. In the end, it seems that her mother's choice will cause the end of free will, and humanity. Perhaps I shouldn't read this one so soon afterNorse Mythology.I was mesmerized byNeil Gaiman's storytelling, and the way he preserved an authentic, nostalgic vibe to his narration of nordic myths, and as a resultAmanda Hocking's approach did not sit well with me.I was introduced to a world which at first seemed like a cheap imitation of the Mortal Instruments, only to later realize that humans and supernatural beings coexist (for example your car mechanic has horns and it's totally cool, even sexy if you're into those things), and then hovercrafts and flying motorcycles were thrown into the mix and my expectations were scattered to the wind.Amanda Hocking's universe did not lack imagination, but I wanted something more traditional, I guess, and the futuristic element took me by surprise. To be fair, my not so enthusiastic reaction towards the world-building is something entirely subjective, and I would propably overlook it if that was my only issue. Sadly, the characters and the romance did not help either. The relationships werefrustratingly superficial, they didn't evoke any emotions, and their backround was poorly established, they were friends or lovers because the author told you they were, not because she showed you the way their bonds ran deep and true.I didn't care about them at all,I was totallyindifferentto their fates, they could live or die, hurt or smile and still I didn't give a damn. And it only gets worse. Most of you must know by now thatthere's nothing I hate more than love triangles. So yeah,Between the Blade and the Hearthad one of those, too. [image] There's your girl, Malin, who broke up with her girlfriend for reasons I can't quite comprehend but still pines over her and salivates at her glowing hair and her crooked smile, and then she meets this gorgeous guy who makes her feel safe and warm and gives her palpitations, and she has a thing for them both. And she acts on the thing she has for them both. [image] The world is literary burning butMalin can't control her hormones. She is overcome with lust at the most inappropriate times, and the heat fogs her brain and she can't make rational decisions. I haven't encountered the need to play savior so far, but I'd rather think that my mind would be on the demons I'm facing next day instead of kissing the one love interest and ten minutes later cuddling with the second. Or maybe it's just me, I don't know. I skimmed the last chapters because after a whileI gave up trying to feel something about these characters except from irritation and exasperation, but I still wanted to learn the conclusion of the story, and that's how I made it to the end. I may sound harsh and bitter, but believe me, my heart is full of sorrow because I know Amanda, I know she is capable of magic and great things, and it kills me to say thatBetween the Blade and the Heartwas not one of her best works. It was still fast-paced and action-packed, and the ideas behind it full of potential, so if you're up for the task, please give it a try.But if you want to truly appreciate her storytelling abilities and swoonworthy romances, I'd say read the Kanin Chronicles instead. *ARC generously provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review* ...more |

3.5 stars, maybe? Trickerywaschaotic. And I haven't decided whether in a positive or negative way. [image] “It’s your own fault, Will. What did3.5 stars, maybe? Trickerywaschaotic. And I haven't decided whether in a positive or negative way. [image] “It’s your own fault, Will. What did I tell you about walking?” Willa Knight is a freakingdisasterof epic, almost-get-impaled-burned-killed-on-a-daily-basis proportions. She lives in a world divided betweensols, the superior beings that strive to become Gods when they die, anddwellers, their servants/slaves who are equal to dirt. And...that's pretty much all the world-building we get, at least in the first book of the series. Of course there are also the actual Gods, but the information concerning their whereabouts is scarce and mostly confusing. But I'll come back to this later. Our aforementioned protagonist finds herself in a precarious situation (well, more precarious than usual) when she is chosen to attend Blesswood Academy as a servant to eligible future Gods, and is assigned (by mistake, mind you) to take care of the Ab(b)curse* Brothers; Siret (call me Trickery), Yael (call me Persuasion), Arol (call me Seduction), Rome (call me Strength) and Coen (call me Pain), who are extraordinarilygorgeousand suck Willa into their divine world infused with super powers, devious Gods and secret missions. Sounds like a fun ride, doesn't it? [image] And it isa fun ride. The reason I pickedTrickery(besides the cover) was the desire to read something similar toDemons at DeadnightbyA.E. Kirk, and the truth is that the authors indeed delivered alighthearted, entertainingstory that makes you chuckle at Willa's precious inner monologues and penchant for nudity and disaster, and thus you inhale it in one sitting. Add to the mixmythologyandrivalries between Godsandfive seriously hot dudes, and that's the recipe for success. At least it should be, but sadly I am a tadunderwhelmed. Like I said before, the world-building needs further exploration. My brain hurt from the confusion over the country of Minatsol, its history and its origins. It wavered between high fantasy and urban fantasy, there were trains and shorts and then godlike powers and swords but no explanation regarding this world's creation, only some vague and inadequate references to the past. And then there is the mythology. It was utterlyunderdevelopedand weak; we know there are Gods with varied abilities (cue some random names), and that some prominent sols become gods, but the reason of the division between sols and dwellers is a mystery to be solved. The second thing that bothered me was the Willa/boys relationship. I loved their dynamics and their banters, and frankly, I loved all the guys (even though I have a crush on Siret), but thetension, theangstand thesexually charged atmospherebetween Willa andall of themwas... cringe-worthy. I'd preferred if she picked one, hell I'd even preferred a love triangle at this point, but beingequally attractedto fivebrothers? And all of them attracted to her? I'm about to believe that all those raging hormones will lead to a kinky sex [image] Even though I expected something more, I recognize the potential for improvement in the following instalments, and I do recommend this series if you're up formindless funand some delicious eye-candy(ies)! *Because having abbs like those (cue excessive drooling) is definitely a curse. **Vote for Team Blake! Oh boy, this is going to be awkward. ➸Disclaimer:I lovedMy Lady Jane.Every time I think of this marvel of a book a huge grin takes over my face. An Oh boy, this is going to be awkward. ➸Disclaimer:I lovedMy Lady Jane.Every time I think of this marvel of a book a huge grin takes over my face. And, partially, that's the reason I may be too harsh onMy Plain Jane(well this and my slow but steady transformation to a judgy old lady that is too difficult to please). I really wanted to love it. Iexpectedto love it. I'm afraid, though, thatMy Plain Janewas exactly what the title promised.Plain. [image] “Northern England, 1834, and the aforementioned penniless, orphaned girl. And a writer. And a boy with vendetta. ➸ Add to the descriptionghosts,a not-so-secret organization that relocates said ghoststo talismans - and occassionally to the other side - (say hello to the Royal Society for the Relocation of Wayward Spirits), amurderor two, a seriously creepy estate, and that's your story. Oh, let's not forget it'sa Jane Eyre retelling. There is your girl, Jane, who is the plainest of them all (in the human world, because the ghosts ask her for skin care tips. Because yes, she can see ghosts, talk to ghosts, even become friends with them). There is also Charlotte Brontë (theCharlotte Brontë), another plain girl, always holding a notebook and her glasses, an aspiring writer that switches genres once or twice (or maybe five times but who cares) and keeps poking her nose in everyone's business. And finally, there is Alexander Blackwood, the star agent of the Royal SRWS (see above) whose mind is constantly occupied by two thoughts: how to best serve the dwindling Society, and avenge his father's death. It all started in a shady pub, featuring a not-so-helpful assistant and a mysterious pocket watch. Then Jane's journey brings her to Thornfield Hall, a charming and welcoming house where piercing screams wake you up in the middle of the night and arsons go unnoticed, and the master is none other than the dark and brooding Mr. Rochester, who may be bipolar but Jane falls for him anyway, because why not, with Alexander following suit because he wants to hire Jane and Charlotte also following suit because meddling is her second nature (maybe first, who knows). And then things escalate quickly. There arepossessions, conspiracies, spirits, castles(palaces), ➸ For starters, I must publically admit thatI haven't read Jane Eyre(yes yes shame on me, I can practically hear Septa Unella ringing her bell somewhere), so on the bright side the story was not particularly predictable for me (the only thing I recall from the movie is a very dashing Michael Fassbender and that's all). And, likeMy Lady Jane, the pop-culture references(The Princess Bride, Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter, to name a few)were highly entertaining.And...that's it. No swooning, no piglike laughter, not the heavy dose of mirth I expected.I did enjoy it, of course, but I missed the spark ➸The humor fell flat and strained. The authors puttoo much effort into creating witty retorts that didn't turn out that witty. They were downright silly. Once more, I can't help but compare it to its predecessor: there, the humor felt natural, an integral part of the narration and the dialogues. Here, it wasforced, the product of too much thinking instead of instinct. It had its moments, though, and that was its saving grace. Well, that and thesupernatural element, because the departed were actually smarter than the living and more fun. Which brings us to the next issue: ➸Most of the characters were extremely, I-want-to-punch-you-in-the-face-then-strangle-you annoying. Our plainJane's brain was clouded by misplaced love for a great part of the book, and for the rest she kept refusing to join the Society without good reason. And speaking of reason, this word wasn't in her vocabulary, along with the term "common sense". Everyone, living and dead, pointed out the oddity of Mr. Rochester's behaviour. Did she listen to them? No. Did she melt when he gave her attention and forget all the times he mistreated her? Yes. See?No common sense. She was simply a lovestruck girl that grew a backbone in the last pages. And then there wasCharlotte.I hated her.So much. What others called curiosity, I call it gossip. She forced her way into the Society even though she lacked the most basic skill, simply because shewantedit andthoughtshe would be good at it. A little presumptuous, aren't we? She kept intervening in affairs that did not immediately concern her, she was the worst kind ofintrusive. And dear Charlotte, I have news for you: we all know that Bran had good intentions when he screwed everything up (even though, to be honest, being this clumsy and prone to mistakes is simplyunrealistic); Sam Winchester had also good intentions when he drank demon blood and listened to Ruby, but he ended up starting the freaking Apocalypse. See my point? And finally,Alexander.I had a itty tiny crush on him at first, but eventually I got over it. He was an intriguing character, with so much potential, but he didn't ignite any flames like I hoped. Which brings us to theromance,or the lack thereof. ➸ Well, aside from the oh so icky relationship between Jane and Mr. Rochester (and I'm not talking about the age gap), there was another love story on the making, andI couldn't care less about it.There were no signs of romantic feelings until the very end, and I just couldn't root for these characters to be together. And that made me angry because the premise promised me a sweeping romance (like the Other Jane and G - cue swooning) but this one?I would be more interested in reading about the weather. ➸ The way I see it,the authors deconstructed a classic story, but unfortunately didn't manage to reconstruct something wholesome.Their attempt was creative, and definitely fun, but there were gaps and patches instead of a polished, laugh-out-loud, toe-curling work like the ones I know for a fact they can deliver. [image] Alright, it's notexactlylike Pride and Prejudice. There is no Mr. Darcy, only an infuriating earl that may of may not have killed his wife. And there is no Elizabeth, only a girl whose curiosity leads her to anunderground demon-hunting cult, but is too reluctant to follow her call. The resemblances lie in thevivid and detailed depiction of the English society, with its etiquette, its balls and fancy gowns and dreams of marriage, all of them wrapped up in a ribbon ofpropriery, that demands from women obedience and good manners, with as little brain and spirit as possible. “No, you are not an angel, Lady Helen. You are a Reclaimer.” As you may have realized, the story follows Lady Helen, a young woman who must try her best to secure a wealthy husband who will overlook the scandals and secrets that surround her dead mother. And her debut would be truly successful, if only she could quell her restlessness, her inability to sit idly and obey orders, when her soul longs for something else, something she can not comprehend. Until she meets the mysterious and infamous Lord Carlston, a man dangerous yet alluring, who will be her guide to a hidden world, full of foul creatures that threaten mankind. Helen doesn't know whether she should trust the Dark Days Club. Her rational part keeps repeating that she is a lady, and has no business with secret clubs, that her Reclaimer powers are a burden and not a call that must be answered. Terrified and torn, she must decide who she is, who she can be and who she must be, when the stakes get even higher and prophecies, demons and rogue hunters threaten her life and her reputation, when Lord Carlston invades her senses and gets under her skin. When she faces the danger of losing herself. “Sometimes there is no good choice.” There is somethingfamiliaryet oddlymystifyingaboutThe Dark Days Club.Alison Goodman's attention to every detail and the thorough investigation she has conducted are truly astonishing, she has left nothing in chance. Every gesture she describes, every piece of clothing and dialogue and dance, they transfuse anauthenticityto her narration. While I must admit that I found the first part ratherslow-paced,and at times wished she wouldn't elaborare this much in things that didn't seem important nor interesting, I admired her dedication. [image] Her underground London, with the Deceivers and the Reclaimers was alsoresourceful, she didn't follow the demons-hunt-humans trope to the letter, she marked her own path, witha dash of paranormal, a plethora of social events and a pinch of slow-burning romance.Lady Helen is not your typical heroine. Even though she felt a rash of excitement when she discovered her true nature, she wasn't sure that she wanted this life, a life of danger and responsibility. I was not particularly fond of her decision towards the end, mostly because she resolved so for the wrong reasons. But in general, she was a fresh and witty character, with a spark of mischief and a brave heart. “You have far more courage than you think you do.” Lord Carlston is anenigma. The truth about him is a riddle to be solved, his motives hidden, but I strongly believe in him, that he is a genuinely good person, albeit somehow tainted by the darkness he keeps facing. He isirresistible. The romantic aspect of his relationship with Lady Helen started forming towards the end, and thetensionbetween them was utterlydelicious.Bound by the rules of propriety, and his lordship's rotten reputation, Lady Helen tried to fight her attraction. To deny her growing feelings. But if there is a word to describe them, that word isburning. What a great story! And it would have been even greater, if it weren't for Ms. Mackayla-call her Mac-Lane. Allow me to explain by posing some questions What a great story! And it would have been even greater, if it weren't for Ms. Mackayla-call her Mac-Lane. Allow me to explain by posing some questions. 1)You were warned that you are going to learn how to kill Fae. What do you wear? a)Fabulouslavender shorts with matching top and high heels-oh my God is thatbloodon your clothes? b)Something cozy you wouldn't mind throwing away later because, you know, mutilated bodies and stuff. c) Does it even matter? Just give me the dagger! 2)You just realized your sister's killer may be hiding in the dark neighbourhood that is inhabited by a caste of Fae that suck your life force until the only thing left of you is dried skin. What do you do? a) Head straight to darkness without telling anyone because you're so badass that Fae should be running away from you. b) Run to the opposite direction. c) Make a solid plan and get some help. 3)You found out that the world is in danger and for reasons unknown you are one of the few who can help. Put your priorities in order: a) Pink nail-polish, hormones, fate of the world. b) Hormones, fate of the world, pink nail-polish. c) Fate of the world, hormones, pink nail-what? Yeap, you guessed right. Dearest Mac's answers were solid A's. If you like your heroinesBarbie-like, you're going to love her. She had her moments of course, but she wasshallow, impulsive and self-centeredto the core. I can understand her reservations to believe in the extraordinary, her reluctance to accept her destiny and her need for closure after her sister's murder, but that's it. I can't justify every single stupid decision she made (and trust me, they were many), and her fixation on her appearance when everything was falling apart, but hey! if you are killed in your sleep you should at least be fashionable, right? [image] I think, though, that I started off the wrong way. BecauseDarkfeverwas actually adeeply addictive, action-packed and ingenious story! As you can already tell, it follows the adventures of Mac, whose sister was brutally murdered in Ireland and so she decided to travel there and find the answers she was denied. But there is something ominous in the streets of Dublin, and she soon encounters creatures that came straight out of nightmares, she searches for objects of dark magic and gets in the middle of the ancient war between Men and Fae, a war that is about to be rekindled. She doesn't know who to trust. The most obvious choice is the sensual stranger who has saved her life a couple of times, but has many secrets and seems to use her for his own purposes. There is only one thing she knows for sure: the Mackayla Lane who first arrived in Ireland is not the same Mackayla Lane that will leave. If she leaves at all. “There are two kinds of people in this world, Ms. Lane: those who survive no matter the cost, and those who are walking lambs.” Fast-paced. Eerie. Other-worldly. And a little on the sexy side. That isKaren Marie Moning's Darkfever, and it deserves all the hype around it. Setting aside my huge dislike of Mac, I loved this wonderful and intricate world, with itsrich mythology, itsgothic vibeand its strongmysteryelement. The narration, with its ominous warnings, the foreshadowing and the way Mac talked to the reader made me even more curious about the events to come. Fae have always been fascinating, and this sinister version of them made Darkfever repulsing and seductive at the same time. And there was alsoJericho Barrons. [image] This man is clouded in mystery, he oozes sexuality, and he's not scared of letting Mac know what he thinks about her. The tension between them is so thick you can cut it with a knife, and I am certain explosions and earthquakes will take place in the next books. Well, count me in! “It's what you choose to believe that makes you the person you are.” All in all, Darkfever is apage-turner,and I'm looking forward to returning to Dublin's dark streets! ...more |

Vicious (adj.): 1) Having the nature or quality of vice or immorality. 2) Dangerously aggressive, marked by violence or ferocity. 3)Victor Vale. “Victor was out. Victor was free. Eli and Victor used to be best friends. Smarter than the rest of the students of Lockland University, they tried to play God. Fascinated by the rumors about EOs, ExtraOrdinary people with supernatural abilities, they studied them at first, but later, they decided to create them. But the sacrifices they hade to make in order to achieve this transformation took something away. Their fear. Their conscience. Victor went to jail because of Eli, but he escaped with one goal in mind. Destroy his nemesis. His best friend. While Eli dedicated his life to the eradication of EOs, since he considered them as something unholy, Victor dedicated his life to revenge. The ultimate fight is inevitable. The question is, who will survive? “But it's a trade, Professor, with God or the devil...” Wow. [image] Viciouswas adelicious surprise, the perfect way to start 2017. While I did not enjoyA Darker Shade of Magicas much as I expected, after some coaxing and a mix of curiosity and hope, I decided to giveV.E. Schwabanother try, and I am so glad I did. I dived into agripping and wicked tale of revenge and superpowers, with characters who were, well, psychopathsbut extremelyfascinating, and while the concept reminded me ofX-Menand the rivalry between Magneto and Professor X,V.E. Schwabfollowed a different path. Eli wanted the extermination of his kind. He fancied himself as a hero, a crusader blessed by God to rid the world of these unnatural beings and protect the innocents who were endangered by this lack of balance. Victor, on the other hand, could not care less. He was fixated on his desire to make Eli pay, using his cunning and devious mind, and a young girl with an ability that rattled Eli. A girl also hunted and betrayed. “There are no good men in this game.” InA Darker Shade of Magic, what bothered me was the lack of connection with the characters. InVicious,I relished this detachment.Victor and Eli weremorally grey(borderline black), so I could not actually empathize with them. They were victims of their ambitions and the circumstances, villainous masterminds who, instead of being repulsed, they embraced all the ugly things that had to be done. Even Sydney, the young EO girl, lost her innocence. And so, I savored every time they outmaneuvered each other, every plan and move that led to the final confrontation, mesmerized by the twists and turns, the action, the suspense. And I have to admit that Victor intrigued me in an I-know-you-are-a-bad-person-but-still-I-root-for-you way. [image] “Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human.” Viciousisan ingenious storyI absolutely recommend to all those readers who craveparanormalwith a dash oftwisted. ...more |

[image] I hadn't read a book focusing sol “She had become the author of her own fate.” AndElena Maybecame the author of aremarkable debut! [image] I hadn't read a book focusing solely on vampires for a very long time. I went through my vampire phase in high school, meaning I attended every single Twilight premiere and hung Edward posters on my bedroom walls and fought Damon Salvatore's fans online (Stefan girl here) and dressed up as a vamprire on Halloween etc. Later, I decided that I grew up and was too old for this drama. So, when Elena May asked me if I would be interested in reading an advanced copy ofKingdom of Ashes,it took me by surprise how eager I was to give it a try. And I am very glad I did. Let's start with the plot, shall we? “He didn't conquer the world. He destroyed it. He rules over an empty world of ashes and death.” The human world had progressed. The scientists created a device, the WeatherWizard, that could control the weather. But it turned out that this device was a fatal mistake, since a vampire named Vladimir organized what would later become the Nightfall; he hid the sun, and the vampires left their secret, dark hideouts and came to the surface, determined to make the world theirs by soaking it in blood. There were two types of humans they didn't kill; the most beautiful ones that were turned, and and the ones who were taken to the Farms, bred and raised in captivity as food supplies. But there was also a third group. The Resistance. The Resistance that suffered terrible losses and decided to launch an impossible mission, the assassination of Prince Vladimir. When Myra volunteered for the task, she thought they would decline. She thought she would die fighting of return a victor. But when she was captured, and kept alive for reasons she could not understand, she realized that the vampires were not the faceless enemies anymore, but beings with their own feelings, ambitions and desires. Surrounded by bloodsuckers that wanted to be her friends, torn between the need for revenge and the thirst for knowledge and culture, the urge to finish the mission and the unholy wish to stay in the Palace and enjoy what she was offered, Myra eventually became the author of her own story, and the impact of her decisions would alter the fate of the world. For better or for worse, it remains to be seen. “This is war. The right way is the way that works. Your pseudo-conscience will one day doom mankind.” I can't possibly deny that there were manyclichésused in Kingdom of Ashes. A plain girl suddenly thrown into a court full of schemes and power games she doesnt' know how to play, an enemy with a tormented past and a depth she didn't expect to find, a world swallowed by darkness and fear in a dystopian environment, we've seen all these things before. But somehow,Elena May made them work.Mixing thepost-apocalypticwith themedieval, describing withvivid(and sometimesmorbid) details a blood culture that creeped you out but also fascinated you, she managed to capture your attention, to drive you insane with the desire to sink your teeth into thisdisturbingly delicious book that was not coloured in black and white, but in every shade of grey you can imagine.Yes the vampires are evil, and we witnessed their atrocities and cruelty many times. But they still can love, suffer and dream, they are the victims in their own story, the ones hunted like animals until they stood up and claimed the world for themselves. And precisely, this grey area, where you can understand the ways of the most dangerous creatures of the night, is Elena's greatest achievement in my opinion. “Why does everything I learn about vampires involve either blood-drinking or orgies?” Myra's character was refreshing. She wasn't someone who played the hero or was certain that her decisions were the best, she was just a girl that loved reading and writing stories and found herself in a precarious situation, trying to survive. What made her special was her ability to create, not her fighting skills or her snarky remarks, even though there were plenty of them. I understood her inner battles, I could justify her confusion and her reluctance to kill Vladimir, I could relate to her, even though I recognise some of her choices were stupid. The vampires, they were allspellbidingin their own way. Vladimir was a riddle I could not solve, cunning and always one step ahead, enchanted by the human culture and fixed on preserving it, even though he was the one that drove it to the brink of extinction. I could never guess his thoughts and his motives, and despite his wickedness (or because of it), I was transfixed by him. Tristan was also an intriguing character I came to love, but I haven't made up my mind about Armida. If you are worried there might be a love triangle, I can assure you romance is not in the spotlight of this novel, it is barely there, but I can see the connection forming between Vladimir and Myra and I am curious about the possible consequences! [image] Kingdom of Asheswas apleasant surprise, and I highly recommend it to paranormal lovers who are looking for a promising new author! *ARC generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review* Instagram|Twitter|Facebook|BookNest ...more |

Courage. Dedication. Loyalty. Magic. While Cabeswater kept fading, while Glendower remained hidden, Blue and her raven boys had to make important decisions, untangle their feelings, understand the metaphysical powers that threaded their web around Henrietta and face demons and corruption and opportunists and monsters. The fight was difficult, sometimes hopeless, but they were never alone. They had each other, and that was enough. For how long though? “What a strange constellation they all were.” I don't know what else to say about this series. Like I can't remember the exact context of this bizarre dream but I can recollect scattered images and emotions.Bliss. Anger. Agony. Pain. Love. For this series and its raw, complicated andrealcharacters. “It was mint and memories and the past and the future and she felt as if she’d done this before and already she longed to do it again.” The Dream Thievesis more focused on Ronan's history, his past, his secrets and his terrifying ability of pulling things out of his dreams. At the same time, Adam struggles to come to terms with the sacrifice he made, Gansey continues his relentless search of the long dead Welsh king and Blue realizes that heart is a traitorous thing and you can't choose who you fall in love with. When a mysterious man appears and strangerparanormal activity strikes their little town, Blue and her raven boys must solve the riddles of their abilities and the ley lines and discover what they're looking for before it is too late. Before someone else does. “All of us have secrets in our lives. We’re keepers or keptfrom, players or played. Secrets and cockroaches — that’s what will be left at the end of it all.” I lovedThe Dream Thieves, but not as much asThe Raven Boys.I was overwhelmed with a constantrestlessness,I almost skipped sentences and pages because I wanted somethingmore, somethingelseto happen but I can't pinpoint what that was. Perhaps I got tired from the frequent switch between dreams and reality, and I ended upa tad unsatisfied. [image] “In that moment, Blue was a little in love with all of them. Their magic. It explained Ronan's hatred against the world, it uncovered the secrets he safeguarded for so long and I fell for his wounded, more vulnerable side. Adam on the contrary became more unpredictable. I can't shake the notion that he isjealousof Gansey and that's the source of his bitterness. [image] “Once there was a little girl who played her music for a little boy in the wood.” But the girl grew up, and forgot about the boy. She continued her life as if he never existed, she kept her family together, composed her music in the dark and wished, for attention, for desire, for greatness. For a world where she was the protagonist and not the one hiding behind her siblings. But the boy remembered. He waited in his gloomy kingdom, until he ran out of patience and kidnapped the girl's sister, in order to lure the girl into his cold and cruel domain. They became enemies, friends, strangers, lovers, but their story was not meant to have a happy ending. Unless they made one for themselves. “Now the days of winter begin, and the Goblin King rides abroad, searching for his bride.” Liesl's story was indeed a Wintersong. Ahalf-remembered lullaby, sang softly in a cold, white night that filled you withlongingandnostalgia,a music your mind could not fully comprehend but a part of you recognized. When you dive into Wintersong, reality is not something concrete. Just when you think you finally grasped it, it slips through your fingers. You can't read it with your eyes nor your brain. It tears down the barriers of reason, until you are lost in atempest of images and illusions, sinful thoughts and deeds, shadows and light. You read it with your soul. “There is music in your soul. A wild and untamed sort of music that speaks to me. It defies all the rules and laws you humans set upon it. It grows from inside you, and I have a wish to set that music free.” Liesl's story wassheer magic.Devious goblins, a Lord of Mischief, a kingdom underground, a set of laws that demanded the greatest sacrifices. And this different, mystical world, despite its lack of colour and life, was fully capable of bewitching you.S. Jae-Jones' narration was both raw and lyrical, her characters good and evil, tainted and pure, cunning and innocent. Liesl was a puzzle for me, I liked her and hated her at the same time. She was too selfish, too jealous, too self-absorbed, too shallow, too vain, too real. She wasn't a heroine polished by her noble deeds, just a woman who was broken in order to find herself. And the Goblin King? A tragic figure bound by immortality, cruel yet unexpectedly tender, a hero and a villain, young and ancient, pious and sinner. “The kiss is sweeter than sin and fiercer than temptation. I am not gentle, I am not kind; I am rough and wild and savage.” Liesl's story was alament. An ode to things lost and found, to love, to art, to tears and to laughter, to music itself. Liesl's grandmother advised her to beware the goblin men and the wares they sell, but I saygive in.Taste Wintersong. Covet it. And let the winds of winter warm your heart. “Once upon a time, there once was a great king who lived underground...” *ARC generously provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review* Instagram|Twitter|Facebook|BookNest ...more |
