This was my least favourite of the series. That isn't to say it was bad. But I am conflicted about my feelings of this book. First the mystery is so obvious I have a hard time even calling it one. I felt a bit like I was getting beat over the head with the evidence, there was no real twist here. At least this part is dealt with fairly early and then the rest of the book is dealing with the aftermath. That aftermath though, it was long. Parts of it were intriguing but I do think the book dragged on. Pip is still an interesting character, she is suffering from PTSD from the last book and wants a last case to save herself. Her struggles feel very real, I just wish we would see healthier coping mechanisms or her getting actual help. Her reliance on Ravi is both sweet and borderline obsessive at times but I do like how she uses his voice in her head to help her through difficult moments. For that matter Ravi does the same with Pip's voice. I wish there was more of an epilogue, as while it was lovely I wanted more about what Pip is doing. After how long it took to get there, not getting more of an epilogue made me feel a bit cheated?
While I did enjoy the trilogy, book 2 was the best of the series for me and I found this one to be too long and a bit of a let down. Still glad I read it and I will read more of the author's work in the future....more

I feel like I'm missing something storywise from not having read the light novels. I do enjoy the artwork though. I found the last couple chapters flowed a bit better. Maybe that is because the characters have been introduced now. I like the merchant city, the auction was a bit underwhelming but that guide was obviously worthwhile! I want to know so much more about Lizel and Gil too for that matter. Beyond a love for finding strong things to kill, what makes Gil tick. Anyway, interesting enough, I think I'll give it one more volume to win me over....more

I found it a bit confusing to start. Lizel finds himself in a different world that is quite similar to his own but doesn't know how or why he got there, nor is it ever really dealt with. Instead he goes calmly about getting some money and a partner to show him around. There isn't much for conflict as Lizel decides he wants to be an adventurer, becomes one and is good at it immediately. I am curious to learn more about him and his partner Gil though. I just want to learn more about the world he is in and just more about the everything in general. The art however is beautiful. I will likely give the second volume a chance to expand and see how things go....more

We get some interesting tidbits, I'm quite interested in who Melo really is. We had a hint in the last volume that she might not be the same girl Mystia thinks she is and this volume made that even clearer with her not recognizing the book. Robert and his anger was good, the switch after when he finds out how wrong he's been was a bit drastic but not as drastic as his plans to drop out and run away! I'm not sure how to feel about Feena. Nice that she wants to be friends but everything else is a bit much. Actually all the obsessions with people, particularly Mystia does get to be a bit much. But still overall it's an entertaining series. Not sure I have access to the next volume but if it becomes available I'll happily continue....more

We get a surprise outburst from a character who now thinks Mystia is a fake and a bully, it's in character with the way the game acts but was out of the blue for the way the characters have been actually treating her. I also liked the end when Mystia finds out her class wants to get to know her and thought she despised them all with her hiding and running away. Not a lot of romance movement in this volume. I look forward to when they actually get to the school but I understand why they did a flashback to prior to introduce all the targets. Mystia doesn't want the end that is supposed to happen, her incarceration and death, to occur so she is trying to remember the details of the game and make different choices. She's too sweet to be a villain and seems to be well on her way to changing her fate. I wouldve liked a bit more villainy with the title what it is, but this will be a cute series anyway and I'll be continuing....more

Their eyes are opened to the paranormal and now that they have seen they cannot unsee nor can they just leave things be. Watching them fight beings that they have no idea what to do with was great. I hope Max comes back though in future volumes. I liked how different some of the beings were, with alien goblin's and mushroom spaceships! Also, props for how well drawn the flayed being was. Overall I quite enjoyed listening to this one but there is some annoying repetition that made me wonder if I had hit rewind on the book. It is considerably longer than it needs to be. I also missed having Daron and Kallia together on the page as they were apart for most of the story. I do wish there was a more final ending as things are wrapped up in some ways but not there is a piece missing to that ending. I loved the magic, particularly the golden rings which are just so cool. Its a good sequel and I enjoy the world that was created. Overall enjoyable and so easy to listen to....more

We got a lot of time with Damien in this one and how he just wants to be good enough for his father. I did like their trip out to the woods and how much his followers really do seem to care about him. Also got some Bond time finally which was great but I don't like seeing him so stressed out! He's still the cutest though. The Thorn Princess is questioning whether she should continue in her line of work but is entering one last mission which has the chance to be quite interesting. Gwen was both frustrating and understandable at various times. H2.5ish stars. This was okay. I may have enjoyed it more 10+ years ago but hard to say.
Gwen was both frustrating and understandable at various times. Her refusal to believe in anything when she is at a school with other kids who obviously have powers and she has her own psychometry just seemed ridiculous. Her use of the word yucko and how squeamish she was with kissing or anything at age 17 seemed a bit farfetched. I like the idea of her gift, but with it you would think she would believe that the myths exist so much sooner than she does. She's also on the dense side as what was going on was pretty obvious. What I did understand about her is her grief. She has a lot of pent up guilt about her mother's death which she needs to deal with, but the grief over it and the not wanting to have fun in her absence makes some sense. As does her anger at being forced to go to this new school in the first place with no real explanations given to her.
There's a lot of double standard in this book as well, girls that have sex are sluts and guys well its just expected of them. For an attractive male its understandable but a pretty female oh no that is the worst kind of person. In general Gwen likes to label people, mean girls, band geek, etc.
There's supposed to be all these different mythologies mashed together but it doesn't work all that well. We only see a couple types of characters, Valkyries and Spartans and we don't get a lot of what make them what they are either. We do learn a bit more about the Valkyries by the end but still. Also of the types of people there only one is actually myth based, Valkyries, the others are all groups of people, Spartans, Celts or professions Ninjas and Samurais. You have an academy called Mythos, lets have some mythical beings please! Also I don't get the pitting a relatively minor Greek Goddess in Nike against a well known Norse God in Loki. There had to be better options here. Most of the gods and goddesses are just background. I think I'd have liked the book better with its own mythos instead of using what it felt like from parts of existing ones without actually going into details.
The book could've been shorter as there is a lot of repetition. Reminded over and over how her mom is dead but was a detective and its all Gwen's fault somehow. That she is an oracle girl, also why was that chosen as the term, make up a new one, an Oracle was a rather major thing in Greek myth and it doesn't fall to Nike... That Gwen has no friends and doesn't fit in, even though she really didn't try so what can she expect.

I enjoyed it while I was listening to it but writing this review almost 2 weeks later and I'm struggling to remember my thoughts about it. Part of that is from listening to the books back to back and not being certain where the last ended and this one started. All the food with Lethe got annoying, I get it she always wants to eat and never gains a pound and hormones and all that. Please quit repeating it constantly. Also quit with the consistent whining of Grier that she wants her curves back and all that too. I do wish Grier had to work for her amazing magical powers and it wasn't all blood memory or whatever. It just made her so overpowered without having to put the time and effort in. The incredible healing properties make things feel less of a risk. All that being said, it was still a fun book to listen to and I do love the characters. Linus is adorable. I appreciate what happens with Boaz. As well as the resolution with Amelie even if it seems a bit out there(view spoiler)[ ya know with the whole she reaches for too much and all the problems that causes but hey sure become the potentate of Atlanta. Makes total sense...(hide spoiler)] We do get some much needed answers, who killed Maud and everything that happened after. I did get sick of hearing Grier's nightmare over and over again in the same words with just a few added on each time though. But I thought the answers were enjoyable.
I know this review sounds a bit more negative, but I really did enjoy this book and the series as a whole. Super easy to listen to. I do think this one was a bit weaker but still absolutely worth reading. I'll get to the spin off eventually....more

I would still love more knowledge of the magic system and vampires and everything else really. The relationships though, fabulous. I love Lethe and her friendship with Grier. Hood is great too. And well of course I love Linus and all of his depth and the things he will do for those he loves. As for the story of this one, I don't want to say a ton. Read the series, its worth it....more
