I loved the close rapport between Mimi (70+mother) Grace (50+ daughter) Mimi, the elderly grandmother is quirky, outspoken, fragile and brave. She lives with her daughter Grace, a stage actress...who is preparing for an upcoming role in Hamlet. I did not expect this book to be so light and filled with believable, casual dialogue. What was the hook? Page 7....then you will not want to put the book down! Jennifer Johnston (Dublin 1930) was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award 2012 from the Irish Book Awards....more

Unlike the synagogue, the house of study, the community center, or the Jewish deli, the café is rarely considered a Jewish space. Yet, coffeehouses profoundly influenced the creation of …modern Jewish culture from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. Shachar Pinsker (professor of Hebrew literature) discusses on the influence of cafés on modern Jewish culture. Democracy was not made in the streets but among….the saucers! Irony:We all go to coffee shops…but today nobody talks. You only hear the click/clack of laptop keyboards. How…times have changed. This book may interest someone is a avid fan of 19th C Jewish literature. I found it difficult to like because of my lack of knowledge of this literary genre. But you may like it!...more

All these stories are important. People are being very honest and telling us what makes Finished:20.12.2018 Genre:non-fiction Rating:B+ #TBR Conclusion:
All these stories are important. People are being very honest and telling us what makes them be who they are. I took something from all these selections ...but most of all I loved Marlee Silva. Her father used a great analogy to explain to his young daughter what it means to be a product of two cultures. Her father poured two cups of black coffee ...adds creamer to one of them. "..no matter how much milk you add: they'll never not be coffee." Marlee uses this image as a shield to this day. This book was an eye-opening education about growing up Aboriginal in Australia. #MustRead

For the first time I approached a collection of short stories as a slow reader. I read each and every word Julie Paul wrote. Not every story is a home-run....but she hit a few out of the ballpark! Curious?
Bad News: Bah, humbug......and this is why: Crime fiction….it is always about the quality of the writing. For example:

Friedrich Dürrenmatt A crime is committed—almost always a murder— and the action of the story is the solution of that crime: determining who did it and why, and obtaining some form of justice.
Personal Kati Hiekkapelto?…crime fiction? This was the contest of wills between the detective and the killer who is on the loose mixed with a multicultural back round (Serbia – Finland). I found nothing baffling in this CF book…. just another formulaic in which cop and the killer trade knockout blows. #Disappointed...waste of time.

Friel sets his plays among people diminished by need. Characters that are on the edge ....in terms of residence, employment ...the marginal figures. These days you have to look long and hard to find towns like Ballybeg with shared values, rituals and and a strong sense of nostalgia (Celtic agrarian roots). This is a detailed reference book for Friel's plays. You can easily zoom in on the play you are interested in.
