it was amazing
bookshelves: horror

One of the most influential all time classics, an absosute must read. I never ever want to go on an antarctic expedition like that told in this story. The description of that unearthly city and its inhabitants will haunt you for the rest of your life. Be aware! Reading that story means meeting with a horror that remains.

Stephane Lionel Exactly the feeling i had after reading this sublime novel. I mean this could be easily considered as Lovecraft's best story of all time.

Peter Hi Stephane, thanks for your comment. Good to hear that you had the same feeling when reading the story. I was hanging on the edge of my seat with all those lurking shadows and those enormous buildings. This is an absolute masterpiece of hair raising horror. All the best Peter

Peter Thank you very much, Lost Knight. As I said this is one of those stories you'll never forget. All the best Peter

Autoclette Replete with monstrous albino penguins!

Peter Hi Autoclette, interesting point! The town described in the novella can easily give you nightmares. All the best Peter

Autoclette Really, I just found the penguins sort of quaint in a way. Mr.Lovecraft sitting in his attic writing the manuscript in Providence Rhode Island 1936, wondering what lives in the Arctic?
Polar bears? Penguins? Ah, yes! Monstrous penguins!
It just seems like such a different time, or something.

Peter Hi Autoclette, well, maybe he was fascinated by penguins and thought them ideal for his surreal world. Lovecraft could even turn those harmless animals into monsters:-) All the best Peter

P.E. What makes this one of your main candidates for the title of favourite story from H.P. Lovecraft according to you, Peter?:)

message 9: by Peter (new) - rated it5stars

Peter Hi P.E. the eerie things lurking in the dark, unseen, threatening. The visualisation of a lost city inhabited by former gods now forgotten but wanting to come back. The moment of absolute horror creeping in through buildings presumably empty populated by shadows. The Old Ones and the whole setting. This story is a real haunting nightmare. So far some thoughts. All the best Peter
