Although written by a homeschooled teenager (and it definitely shows, especially in the sequels), I was entertained by this novel. I had seen the movie first which makes it look like the world was cobbled together while trying to bridge the gap betweenStar WarsandLord of the Rings,and was turned off to reading the novels. After being told by a cousin of mine that the book was next to nothing like the movie, I tried it out and fortunately found the statement to be fair.
While not the most original story (seriously, there are too manyStar Wars+Lord of the Ringsmoments to count), I have to give the author credit for plodding onward into his bloated first novel. Other than the fact that the story seems contrived, I was completely taken out of the story when they start talking about molecules and cells in a medieval-ish setting. It just seemed completely incongruous and anachronistic.
I give it 3 stars only because it was written by a 15 year old. If a thirty year old had written this, it would receive 2.

Great review! I own this series but have never read them - they are merely a place for me to rest my Viserion PopVinyl; )I don't think I'll be rushing to change that any time soon.

Those Pop figures... so many great ones. The thing is if I bought one, I know I would end up with a ton of them. Like Lego, Funko Pop has a great grip on licensing.
It's a sickness. But since I admit that I have a problem I'm halfway to recovery, right?

There are a bunch of them that I want, but I know they would just take over everything so I must resist the urge to buy even one.

If you're looking for a binge-read and like heavy books and both Star Wars and LOTR, then you'll probably enjoy them.:-)
