“I dream of you, Rain. Then I wake up and I don’t have you, and it’s a nightmare.”
this was a fun little regency era romantasy w fae, witches, familiars, and all other sorts of fantasy creatures.
i did expect a little more plot-wise as it was mostly focused on the romance, but it was a fast read and there's definite promise of more action in the future.
omg that ending!!!! i have to know what happens next 👀

First, just to get this out of the way - this is Book 1 out of a larger series, NOT a standalone as I had somehow assumed when I preordered it (based on the really fabulous snippets posted by the author on her social media accounts). So, I was really startled when I hit the cliffhanger ending - and I usually hate cliffhangers! BUT: this time, I really and truly didn't mind it. As the location bar on my e-reader had crept closer and closer to the end, I had found myself really regretting that I was nearly finished with the world and the characters, and feeling that I hadn't had enough time yet with any of them. So it was great to realize that I would have more after all (and soon! I immediately preordered Book 2, which is coming in May, I think). Also, although there is an action-y cliffhanger that involves great peril, the emotional core story of the book did feel resolved to my satisfaction at that point, so I wasn't left feeling frustrated, only interested in what will happen next.
This is a fantasy romance between two ancient fae (the heroine even older than the hero, to the point where Rain can't even remember exactly how old she really is anymore), and I loved that they both felt truly fae and other. Despite what the blurb might imply, the hero, Night, is not at all an obnoxious alpha type - the kidnapping element in the storyline is playfully done and carefully positioned within fae cultural imperatives (with the total understanding that Rain is far too powerful for him to hold her against her will for long - and he's too ethical to do that anyway). The setting is gaslamp fantasy, with a rich sense of worldbuilding, and while the witchy fae heroine's last 500 years of solitude (spent alone in a forest except for her familiar) have left Rain feeling shy about conversation/flirting tactics, she is still absolutely an ancient and powerful warrior. At one point, she lovingly promises Night the head of one of his enemies as a gift, and he LOVES that she is strong enough to fulfil that promise! Their whole dynamic by the end is just fabulous.
I loved the hero's real charm and his strong ethics, I loved the heroine's true, inhuman wildness, huge heart and deep loyalty, and I absolutely adored Rain's familiar, a demon named Bernard who spends most of his time as a cat (and would be SHOCKED to learn that he looks adorable in that form). Also, there's a great Yaga witch (Sora Yaga) among the side characters, and her house is every bit as fun and deadly as she is.
I do think it's important to give a CW for mention of sexual violence. That violence is never explicitly shown in action on the page, but Rain has appointed herself the protector of a trio of vulnerable women in a brothel near her forest, so she does charge to the rescue a few times to violently punish men who have treated them horribly.
I am really looking forward to book 2! So much of this book was about Rain re-investing in the outside world and connecting to a new found family after her centuries of solitude. I can't wait to see how she wields her strength now that she's ready to charge back into the wider world once more!

I one-clicked this on a whim and am shocked that I enjoyed it?! Love this for me. My “have to read new purchases asap” resolution is terrific. It was 99 cents a few days ago but it’s back to $4.99 now (still on KU, though).
I don’t know how to recommend this to folks because 1) the first half is kinda slow/confusing and 2) there’s periphery discussion related to sex work I feel conflicted about (fwiw it’s like 80% okay and and 20% questionable). However, I can’t rate it 3.5 stars because I would pay money to read the upcoming sequel immediately and a sub-4 rating feels dishonest. So. Very much a 4 star on pure enjoyment level, not because I think the worldbuilding is perfectly coherent.
I’m *obsessed* with the ship and the mating rituals (my god, the mating rituals. Incredible stuff related to feeding and bathing 🥺). Flew through the book in two hours and am pissed the sequel’s not out until May. Alas, this one ends on a cliffhanger but I knew that before purchasing. Be warned. Romantically, it ends in a good place (it’s not a “I hate you and we’re breaking up forever” cliffhanger).

This book omg…our main character is Rain, a centuries old fae, who doesn’t remember basically anything from her past. She is a warrior, covered in scars, and she is a witch.
For a fae to become a witch, they have to give a part of their soul to a demon, and turn the demon into their familiar. Because of this, their souls are ‘broken’. You can also make a fairy your familiar, but they are very rare, and it’s even rarer to have a fairy as your familiar.
In ‘Court of tricksters’, there is a war waging between the dragon king, and the seelie queen (who by the way is a witch with a fairy familiar and she’s like, 𝘮𝘦𝘨𝘢 powerful.
Night, is our other POV and Rain’s mate. (In the beginning I thought this entire book was a lot like A Court of Thorns and Roses, but it actually wasn’t at all!) Night is the Duke of the lunar province, and he is being forced by the dragon king and seelie queen to pick a side to support. They both want him to marry someone of their choosing, and the queen can mend people’s mind with her powers, but if you have a true mate bond, you can withstand her power. So Night needs Rain to accept the bond.
Rain doesn’t want to accept the bond, because Night doesn’t believe in love.

What I enjoyed the most?… the lyrical writing. I loved how I just wanted to keep on reading it.
Set in historical world this book has magic, soulmates, Faes, Dragons, seelies, mortals, giants and so much more. Unique but enjoyable world building was introduced slowly but surely. So there wasn’t any confusion regarding characters. Even though I was never bored, I did feel impatient in the first part.
Night the hero was equal parts fearsome and naughty. Naughty to heroine Rain (I love their names) and fearsome to all others. Their relationship was utterly cute.
Loved Rain. She was a badass and an introvert. Her loneliness touched my heart. I loved her familiar Bernard. He was such a menace and cracked me up with his witty personality.
The books and characters had depth. About halfway the story picked up it speed and I truly started enjoying. The unseen players started showing their hands, plots and politics were thickening and just when I was so invested, it ended in a bloody cliffhanger.
Can’t wait to read the next book.

“There is no greater act of trust, no greater act of love, than to bond with your one and only true mate.”
What initially drew me to Court of Tricksters was it's gorgeous magical cover - the shades of blue, the silhouette of the couples caught in an brace was enough to reel me in. But, sadly it just failed to hit the mark that I was hoping for. It's a fantasy romance between Night, a young fae Duker searching desperately for his mate in order to establish political stability to his kingdom, and Rain, a much older fae warrior who constantly rejects Night's intentions, because in her heart she hopes for a marriage based on love, not a marriage of convenience.
And despite my many attempts not to compare Night to Cardan, it was unfortunately inevitable. 😂😂 Night was a fascinating character, in his own right, of course. Trickster he may be, he had a very compassionate heart who cared very much for his people. I also liked the relationship with his half-brother and the dragae familiar, and hope we'll get more of them in the sequel.
True to his word, though, Night is a VERY passionate sweetheart who is very forthcoming in his advances to claim Rain as his bonded mate - often times, a little too much so, that made me cringe. But, you could clearly see how much he wanted her, and how affectionate he was in trying t make her as comfortable as possible. He certainly didn't shy away from expressing how much she meant to him.
“I dream of you, Rain. Then I wake up and I don’t have you, and it’s a nightmare."
What girl wouldn't fall for a declaration like this? Well, clearly Rain could, and y'know? I liked Rain - she may be very innocent when it comes to romance, but she was an absolute badass with her fighting skills and determination. I liked how steadfast she was in her beliefs, how she didn't shy away from protecting the brothel human girls from the violent abuse of their clients. Her heart ached for their pain and mine did, too, when she failed to protect one of them. That moment in the forest, when she humbly requested the tree for aide, was definitely most of the most beautiful scenes in the book. 😢😢
I also very much enjoyed the witty banter between her and her familiar, Bernard the cat. He stole the show with every scene he was in, with his defiant grumpiness and his unflinching loyalty to Rain. Their deep-rooted bond between them was one of the driving forces that particularly shined at the unexpectedly cruel cliffhanger ending, S.L. Prater ended the story on.
The writing was also pretty decent - nothing too grand, but it still kept a steady pace with the direction of the plot. There weren't many spicy romantic scenes, but I liked some of the sweet tender moments Rain and Night shared - like the little details of leaving a note, saying Don't touch my things. Hope you are well. Very sweet, very cute, very original, very much them.😊😊

It's funny how it can almost be read as a slow burn, since they didn't really get together till towards the end, but the fact that he's been smitten with her from the start, made it a little interesting to see how Rain will yield to his advances. What I COULD have lived without was the constant reminder of how important it was that Night and Rain were bonded soulmates. I know a lot of people would not have minded it, rather find their mating rituals cute and endearing. Maybe it was the wording, or the emphasis on how significantly important it was to the kingdom that Night HAD TO FIND a mate that didn't sit well with me. It's strange for me to be so fixated on it, but it was definitely a point that may have ruined my experience with a book that could've fared much better if not for this irksome detail. 🙂

I honestly needed a day to think about this. The beginning was rocky. The story felt like it began halfway through the story already. At the start of the story, Night and Rain had already met and had been secretly meeting each other in the woods for months, and she is already in love with him. I feel like this story would have been better if we got to see them meet and get to know each other. I was curious how Night was able to coax Rain to talk to him at first because she's so skiddish. Instead, this book was entirely built on insta-love. I get it, they're mates, but there was absolutely no hesitancy or denial or anything remotely interesting about the romance aspect of this book. Yes, Night "doesn't believe in love," except he is very obviously already obsessed with her, so that plotline is just stupid. The insta-love wouldn't have been a problem for me except for the fact that the quote that made me start reading this book (promoted by the author, I believe) was something about how he had kidnapped her to be his bride when they first met, which really implies that this is an enemies to lovers story. It is most definitely not. I'm not even sure if what Night does qualifies as kidnapping because Rain is thrilled about it. She loves him already. It was a bit boring, to be honest, and I kept pausing this book. I pushed through because it's pretty short. The blurb for the book also does not really accurately portray the dynamics of the relationship in this story, in my opinion. It's technically all true, but it makes it seem like Night is more cold-hearted and anti-hero than he is.
The story became a bit more interesting when Rain ran away from Night's estate by sneaking out on the tree and then she was kind of badass in how she handled her deal with Sigard. However, the book became meh again because she went back to literally the exact same tavern that Night had originally found her in, so he quickly finds her again. Also, the world-building is pretty shaky--I'm still unclear on what a trickster is.
Overall, I was incredibly underwhelmed by the romance in this, but the ending fight scene, the sad death, and the cliffhanger was pretty good. Also Bernard is the one really really bright part of this book. I loved Bernard, and he made me laugh out loud several times in this book. His loyalty to Rain and the women of the brothel is amazing. I hope he plays a bigger role in the next book with more of his sass/evil-but-loving attitude.
The story became a bit more interesting when Rain ran away from Night's estate by sneaking out on the tree and then she was kind of badass in how she handled her deal with Sigard. However, the book became meh again because she went back to literally the exact same tavern that Night had originally found her in, so he quickly finds her again. Also, the world-building is pretty shaky--I'm still unclear on what a trickster is.

This book broke me. It is funny. It is dark. It is romantic. It is perfect.
I think I highlighted about 80% of this book! Here's one of my favourite quotes:

Night, Duke of Lunar Court, knows he's found his mate as soon as he spots her lounging on a tree branch. With war looming, he knows she will be the secret card up his sleeve to protect his people.
He isn't prepared for how much Rain will resist him or their inevitable connection. But he's not a fae to accept defeat, and so his game of seduction begins.
Rain doesn't stand a chance against his 'broken smile' and wicked humour.
My thoughts:
I can't explain how much I loved this book. But here are a few reasons why I will be thinking about this book for a long time:
- Prater's style: There is something almost poetic in her prose. I can't help but feel like I am 'watching' her books. Her style is unique; I feel like I'd recognise it, even without her name. She really is incredibly talented.
- The characters: Oh, my goodness. Rain is brilliant. A witch who's lived many, many centuries, she still somehow manages to stay innocent. Previously a fierce warrior, she doesn't hold back when her loved ones are threatened. Night *swoon* The dark fae Duke is drool-worthy. The gentle way he chases his mate, the humour and resilience *chef's kiss*
- Bernard: Rain's familiar, usually in the form of a 'terrifying' cat. He stole my heart. His devotion and protection of Rain is heart warming. The humour he brings to this book genuinely were some of my biggest highlights. I want a familiar too.
- The 'Boot' girls: Rain's girls, her family. The glimpse into their world at the tavern and the way they protect and look out for Rain was a true portrayal of selfless friendships.
- The world: Prater creates a magical world that doesn't feel forced or too info-dumpy. The reference to the trees, to the witch's house, the butterflies... actual perfection. I love it so much.

The smut:
This book is not smutty, but it is romantic. The characters do not kiss until 70% or so and although they are intimate, that doesn't happen until later. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that the book isn't sexy. It is! The sexual tension is so, so sweet. The small touches, the glances and the longing make those physical moments all the more powerful.
The ending:
The cliff hanger at the end and some of the events building up to it left me heart broken and in tears but I wouldn't change a single thing about this book. I have decided that this is my all time favourite Prater book and can't wait to get my hands on book 2.

I love this book so much. And I have made a grave mistake because the next book isn’t out yet.
If you like Robin McKinley’s beautiful writing, you will love this book too. It’s absolutely gorgeous. With spice.

I am just so upset that I didn’t realize this book isn’t standalone until I was caught in its spell.
Kickass heroine who knows her worth and sets boundaries. A kind and mischievous hero who also knows her worth and pushes her boundaries to win her. He “doesn’t believe in love” and yet is loving and pines so hard for her. He doesn’t know that he already loves her.
For once, the age gap isn’t crazy. They’re both on their 500’s and she’s a bit older. And a warrior. A tired warrior who walks with her trees and loves her girls.

I would give my left kidney for every single main character in this book. Rain, Night, Bernard, the women of Red Boot - it would be black market on my organs if they needed a single freaking thing.
There are just some books that are so lovely and light and fluffy and warm that you just fly through them and this was that book for me.
The banter between Rain and Night was on point.
“You have kind eyes,” she said softly, her cheeks heating.
"They’re kind because they’re looking at you.” He spoke in a baritone that reminded Rain of warmed honey.
"Does no one else think you’re kind?”
"No,” he confessed. “But don’t let that trouble you. I vow you will always think I’m kind.”
Fucking KILL me. They're so fucking adorable.
Night is a simp and I am here for it. And honestly so am I. I'll hold the signs outside of every one of Rains performances, sports gathering, job interviews. I do not care. Sign me up. I mean, the way this man talks to her when she's not even conscious?
“Sweetheart, don’t listen to a damn thing my stupid brother says. You’re coming home with me. You’re all mine now,” he purred over her, and her breathing slowed.
"Are you at all worried what this warrior woman with all her knives is going to do to you when she wakes up?” Erickson noted.
“It’s good that you have such fight in you,” Night whispered to Rain, ignoring his brother. “There’s a war coming. You’re going to need it, darling.”
Even the interactions with Bernard made me want to start the adoption papers.
Why is she touching me? Bernard groused.
Rain’s cheeks filled with a smile. Then the pungent scent of demon magic hit her nostrils and she grimaced. She wants to be your friend.
We are not friends. Tell them I am an ancient and powerful demon. Hell itself spat me out. Its fires could not hold me.
“He’s happy to see you again,” Rain told them, dropping her cloak over the back of the chair. They both cooed at the demon.
Bernard flexed his claws. Fear me, mortals!
Everything about this book just worked for me. I loved the affection and adoration that Rain and Night had for each other. I loved that Rain and Night were actually similar in age. I loved that Rain was gentle and yet resilient and there was such a core of loneliness inside of her that I understood and that made her unease in being with Night so legitimate.
Her exhale shot a burst of vapor into the cool night air. “I know, but you don’t just get to do whatever the bond wants you to. You’re forgetting to use words like ‘please’ and ‘may I’ around me. It’s making me feel . . .”
“Feel like what?”
“Like I’d like to stab you with something,” she confessed, trying to wriggle her fingers and toes. It was unnerving that she couldn’t.
“Wonderful. You make me just as violent. The audacity of forcing me to come and kidnap you again.”

Rain was not a card. She was a player. A warrior who tricked tricksters. There was no doubt in his mind that she was worth the effort, worth the chase, worth his bond. She was the wife he wanted, the partner he needed, the true mate that could save his court.
I wasn't ready for Court of Tricksters, and I mean that in the best sense. Usually, when I go into an S.L. Prater book, I can expect healthy amounts of fun, romance, humor, spice, a touch of whimsy, and great tension and action - all packed compactly into about 200-300 pages. With this offering, I got all of that, and yet more, but what that more actually is remains indefinable to me. An adequate description eludes me. I just know that whatever it is, that extra spice or zest or magic she wove into Court of Tricksters... whatever it is, I love it, and I want more.
Anyone who knows me knows I HATE cliffhangers with a passion that burns with the fire of a thousand suns... but I broke my "no unfinished series with cliffhangers" rule, because our authoress is fantastic and I just couldn't help myself. The things I do for love... And while yes, this cliffy was mean, it's worth the angst I'll have to deal with until the next book drops.
I don't wish to spoil this one because it deserves to be experienced to its fullest, so I'll just sum it all up as so:
Rain and Night are wonderful characters, I adored their courtship and the push and pull of their budding relationship. I quickly grew attached to a number of the side characters, Rain's demon familiar in particular. And this may put me in the minority, but if you're looking for a fast burn spice-wise, look elsewhere. Are our two mains totally lost for each other almost from the jump? Yes (and its adorable). But considering the histories of these characters and the personal hurdles they have to overcome, the "delay" in being physically and even emotionally intimate not only makes sense, but it makes that sexual tension exquisite and those moments of feels more poignant.
That cliffhanger is very cruel, though - even though I can already anticipate what will happen in the next book, that feeling of "unfinished" is just so mean! lol
But the TL;DR is I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a quick, fun read with memorable characters, a captivating world of fae and witches and magic, and the prose sometimes has this poetic/lyrical quality to it, and I just love that.
An excellent afternoon read!

Wow, so I liked this book more than I thought I would and I mean that in the best way. This book was so enjoyable overall and just such a fun and quick read! All of this to say, this is my first S.L. Prater book but it will not be the last.
Also, before moving on to the rest of the review, this book does end in a cliffhanger! It is the first book of a series and honestly, I loved the ending and it left me on the edge of my seat as I wait for book two.
Rain was such an incredible character. She was like, a breath of fresh air? I don't know if that's the best way to explain it but she was such a perfect mixture of a brave warrior, who is also a shy, kind character with a heart of gold. She wasn't overly rough, but also wasn't overly soft. Like I said, a great mixture. Her resistance to the bond and the fear of giving herself to another and trusting her heart in the process, her soul, it was such a relatable reaction. I rooted for her the whole book and was giddy with her when Night made us swoon.
Night, I really liked his character. He is kind and caring, but also fierce and powerful. He is such a sweetheart to Rain and it was so beautiful to see. I loved how this book focused on their bond and how it grew when they focused on it and did acts that made it blossom. I've read many books involving mating bonds, but I had never seen so many acts focused on making that bond thrive and how happy and it made both parties. It was cute, what can I say?
Bernard, I want a Bernard. Where can I get one? A demon familiar who says he does not love "love and physical touch" but definitely does? Yes, please. New best friend material. And he is so loyal and just loves Rain. He has been her only family for years and it shows the love goes on both sides.
Overall, yes, you should read this book! It will have you giggling, it will tug at your heartstrings but it will also have you stressing at moments. But if you love books with the found family trope, the mates trope, and books with magical familiars, this book is for YOU!

OH.MY.GOD!!!
Is it possible to fall in love more with this book than I already do? I did. What an amazing story that I never thought I needed!!! It was painfully beautiful and heart warming romance!!! I loved and enjoyed soo much it hurts. This is the best fantasy romance I ever read in my life. I loved Night and Rain. They are wholesome and has my heart in a chokehold. Bernard is the sweetest thing and I really want to pet him. Night and Rain are the cutest couple and they make my soul sing! My, My!!! I clearly have no words to describe how much I loved. I'm sooo looking forward to the sequel!!

Court of Tricksters is the first book in the Fae Tricksters series, featuring the courtship of Night, a duke from the Lunar court and Rain, a witch living in the woods almost like a hermit. He could offer her wealth and power but she gave up things that trivial so long ago. If she is to marry, it will be for love and nothing else. Night is going to have to figure out a way to woo her if he is to get the marriage he desperately needs to save his kingdom.
This is a slowish burn romance. Rain is a weather witch; she has been living on her own in the woods for centuries with not many for companionship. She has her familiar, a faery demon she bonded when on the verge of death around 500 years ago and the women at a brothel in town she has taken under her wing. Other than that, she lives off the forest mostly alone, until the Fae male found her recently and has been coming to read and walk with her nightly. She never talks to him, but she is drawn to him in ways she cannot explain.
Night knew the moment he set eyes on Rain that she was special and would be the key to keeping his Court safe from the war that is bound to break out any day now. To keep his Kingdom from being a pawn, he will need to marry his mate. Rain is that woman, but she is not interested the the things Night could easily give her like comfort and wealth. She wants his heart and while he is willing to give her his body he doesn't think he will ever be able to love. The Fae instincts run strong and mortal moralities do not count when one is trying to win his mate. So if he needs to kidnap Rain for a time to keep her safe and try and convince her to be his mate Night will. He just didn't expect Rain to be even trickier that he is.
Both characters are very likable. Rain with her attachment to a group of whores in a tavern and how she loves those women. Also her relationship with Bernard, her familiar, is fantastic and Bernard steals the show every page he is on. Night is also likable, I do so love broken characters and he has definitely been broken. Rain might be the woman to show him what love looks like and convince him it is worth having in his life. The what they treat each other and the courting rituals for their mate bond were interesting and I enjoyed them.
My only complaint, well two actually, is it seemed we were getting to the meat of the plot late in the story. Rain doesn't remember anything before her near death and bonding to Bernard, but as a reader we all know the who of what she is will be important later. Also Night's story and why he is so desperate not to take sides in the war and why he thinks the mate bond will save him also doesn't come out until late in the story and then it is over. My second semi complaint is this ends in a pretty decent sized cliff-hanger. The good news is the next book is out so hopefully that will be on audio soon.
Overall an interesting story on the mating rituals of Fae, moon magic and the power of witches. I had a really good time overall and was disappointed when the story ended. I will definitely continue on as I must know what happens to our scarred and battered witch Rain and if Night will ever open his heart and realize it isn't just Fae instincts but also love. SL Prater is a new to me author but I will be interested in some of their other works based on this story.
Narration:
Victoria Aston and Liam Price performed the story well. I thought Liam captured the tortured broken Night well and his voice was clear and fit the role of the educated and world savvy Duke. Victoria Aston brought both the fierceness and vulnerability of Rain to life. She was able to portray the strength and weakness of our scarred heroine well. I liked how each PoV offered a different narrator making the characters really pop. They did great to differentiate the characters. I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

Victoria Aston and Liam Price performed the story well. I thought Liam captured the tortured broken Night well and his voice was clear and fit the role of the educated and world savvy Duke. Victoria Aston brought both the fierceness and vulnerability of Rain to life. She was able to portray the strength and weakness of our scarred heroine well. I liked how each PoV offered a different narrator making the characters really pop. They did great to differentiate the characters. I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

I cannot believe I read a romance book where the cat has more rizz and personality and protective instincts and pure love than the H oh my god. Honestly, this book should've just been a princess & the frog style romance between Rain & Bernard.
"You've gone mad with bond lust." --> a perfect summary of the entire plot.
If you've read Lord of the Fading Lands, you'll probably like Rain & Knight in this book as they read veryyy similarly.
I would've enjoyed this book more if it began with Rain & Knight meeting for the first time. Instead, they've known each other for a while, have embarked on a shy but endearing courtship where Rain leaves gifts and Knight goes on walks with her in the woods. But we don't actually see any of this happen.
This book picks up from when Rain finds out the one guy she's ever liked in her more than 500 yrs of existence is a duke and gets stressed that he could never like her for being witch. Meanwhile Knight is ready to bond with her for exactly that reason - having a witch mate would mean he'll be saved from a war... somehow.
And then basically he kidnaps her over and over again. It's not as hot as it sounds because the guy actually has very low rizz.
But Rain doesn't want to marry him or be his mate because she wants love, like fair enough I would too. And do you know what Knight's response to that is? He basically says I can't give you love, but like how about duty? Isn't that soooo much hotter, marrying and mating for duty?!
Give me a break. So in summary, the writing style doesn't really give you the feels. Only Bernard can give you the feels but he's a demon cat so...

I loved this book!
The world the author created is very rich and magical.
For me the pacing is great. The story flew fast but not too fast. There is a very good balance between dialogue and action scenes. What i really like and i appreciate is that we don't have to many and to long descriptive passages.
The story is very dynamic and even though it's a little bit to short for me (i wanted more) i managed to get attached to the characters.
The two main characters are lovely and the fact we had the opportunity to read the story from (both) their point of view is great.
My favorite character is Bernard. From the moment he showed up i had the biggest smile on my face. The humor he brings is perfect.
I think the secondary characters are well developed and i even got emotional toward the end of the book (when you read it you will know what I'm talking about).
But i didn't expect that kind of ending. Now i don't know how i will be able to wait for the next book. I want it now because i want to find out what will happen next. I have many theories so now we wait.

I picked up this book randomly for two reasons. One, I saw a post made by the author comparing it to Howl's Moving Castle and I being the mood reader that I am thought, I could totally go for that right now. And two, the cover is absolutely GORGEOUS!
With only those two things in mind I went and found myself a copy on Kindle Unlimited (yay!), and I think it was a pretty great decision if I do say so myself! This books had so many things things that I adore: fae, badass female MC, alpha male, slow burn, found family, mates, just to name a few.
I loved Rain and Night together, they were so friggen cute...and hot. I am taking a minute here to yet again thank god for adult fantasy! Right, back to task, I love when the MC knows what he wants (her obviously) and goes out to get it. I also really enjoyed the true mates aspect here, because unlike some other books where "mate" is fated instalove, in this one the term "mate" more referred to compatibility and the bond had to be nurtured by taking care of each other (feeding, bathing, just generally making the other happy) to be complete. It worked really well and completely avoided the instalove vibes that I normally so dislike.
Something that was a bit unexpected for a high fantasy, the world building took a surprisingly small role. The main focus of the book was on the relationship with some fantastical elements and nefarious creatures scattered throughout. This is in no way bad, but if you are looking for a book with those lush descriptions that will make you vividly picture a fantastical place, you may be a bit disappointed. That being said, the story was an excellent pace and had me enthralled to the end...and that cliffhanger ending, ACK that was mean, I want to read the next one now!
Finally, a shout out to Bernard the familiar, he was freaking hilarious!
P.S. I should probably address whether I agree with the author's post that this was like Howl's Moving Castle. I really enjoyed this book! I loved the characters and their relationships. Here's a quick overview:
Night = grumpy and surly on the outside but a major softie on the inside. Says he doesn't believe in love but literally folded within milliseconds of seeing Rain for the first time.
Rain = honorable and protective. Just wants love and happiness. Also touch them and d*e to the max.
Bernard = mischievous demon that will be bribed with cheese. Very protective of his family but will deny it till the end of time. Scared of cats.
Margot, Penny, and Susan = fiercely loyal and supportive, they care for and lift Rain up in the very best way.
12/10 recommend if you're looking for something sweet and cozy that's quick with relatively low stakes!

2.25⭐️ This was fine, I enjoyed Rains character and her relationship with nature and her friends in the brothal was sweet. However her familiar, Bernard, was probably the saving grace of this book. I loved him.
The romance started out cute but by the end up the MMC was just annoying me and the world building was lacking.
But if your interested in giving it a go it’s pretty fast paced, has dual POV, found family, fated mates and it’s on kindle unlimited💫

The way it ended blew my mind 😭😭😭 Court of Tricksters was a great read! Rain has lived through centuries of battle and survival and was content to live out in the woods until Night came along... 👀 Check this book out if you like fae trickster lords and badass elven-fae heroines!

January 20, 2023I feel like every time I review an SL Prater book I’m restating the same things: amazing characterization, wonderful world building, enchanting descriptions, super hot sexy times, etc. And let me just say, her latest release, Court of Tricksters (Fae Tricksters #1), is no exception. How she manages to weave figures from folklore within our real world with such normalcy blows my mind. I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about her writing, it’s gorgeous and effective while, at times, extremely comical.

Well, not a cat perse, but more of a demon cum familiar (twss) cat-type being. I don’t know how she made me fall, but she did.
Bernard, the former hell demon turned cat familiar of our heroine, Rain, is a delight. His Garfield-esque delight in overeating and similar need to seek vengeance on their attackers is quite endearing.
You’ll have to excuse me for a second while I describe the what I imagined when reading this dialogue:
Bernard flapped his ebony sings overhead. Do you want me to shit on his hat?
Rain repressed a snort. You probably shouldn’t.
Are you sure? I’ve cleaned out most of an ice box. I’ve plenty of ammunition.
This may be the covid talking (yes, I have covid, again dammit), but I envisioned the Salem cat puppet from Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Giving Sabrina some total sass while being absolutely adorable. You know, how jerkoff cats are most of the time. But in the show, I’m sure Salem wasn’t talking about shitting on like Harvey’s hat, I mean, he might have, I didn’t watch the show that closely. Still, delightful. His dialogue throughout is fantastic and memorable - always quick to maim or poop on someone. An animal after my own heart.
But we all know how side-kicks are portrayed in media; most of the time they’re insufferable sycophants that just want attention or play the hapless friend that sets off the ‘inciting incident’ that "got us into this mess in the first place!" With the exception of Bucky Barnes (I’m biased) and the like, how many times did you hope that a batarang beefed into Robin’s head?

Here we have a wisecracking, lethal, shape shifting, loyal, former demon who you actually worry about if they’re not referenced for a few pages. The dynamic between Rain and Bernard is beautifully played out - he’s grouchy and sarcastic but extremely loyal. One of the most beautiful lines in this entire book is “I want to walk with you through the stars for the rest of forever” and it’s said by a cat… to a person. The idea that we would love to know what our pets truly think of us and our own special bond - and Prater has given us this. It’s pretty amazing.
Also, damnit Prater, now I’m crying again.

Angst. I’m not even going to address this, you know how I roll. I put up with it here because I love this writer, but make me cry and we will have words.

S.L. Prater has a way with prose that elevates her work in so many ways. For example, I've read tons of fantasy romance and some authors have attempted to ‘over design’ their worlds. It would explain why every fantasy novel on the lengthy side. For Prater, she can easily work within the confines our world by drawing out elements of the fantastic. Within a world of carriages, dukes, gaslights, and old english taverns, exist fae, giants, demons, and the like. It’s a brave choice, for sure, other authors would feel the need to over develop every piece of machinery, conveyance, mode of communication, etc. Why? When you think about the turn of the 20th century, most of our modern inventions seemed like magic at the time - this is the same ideal. If it ain't broke?
I'm going to devote the rest of my bottom bun to some of my favorite passages:
Rain turned in his arms. He let her, gazing down at her with two silver pools she could drown in. His hands rested on her hips, a heavy welcomed weight. In that moment, Night was the living embodiment of a fairy story. He had stars in his smile, obsidian in his hair, and the moonlight of his eyes was so piercing, so extraordinary, Rain couldn’t get enough oxygen into her lungs. Being near him made her weightless. If he let her go, she might just float out of the meadow”.
Again, crying. Dammit.
Lastly, I would just like to say that if you've never taken a foray into S.L Prater’s oeuvre (that sounds weirder than intended), literally stop whatever you are doing, go to Amazon, and 'one click' on any of her novels. Although part of the same world, you won’t be lost, they are all absolutely amazing. I mean, you'll get lost..in her world. (I'll see myself out…)

It was almost too cold to cry. Rain’s tears fell hot down her cheeks, then cooled quickly, leaving icy streaks that froze in the bitter wind. “Thank you,” she sobbed, pressing her flat of her hand to the oak’s trunk, the bark veined with green and gold that glinted in the night. The tree’s essence had changed. It wasn’t just warm and ancient now. It was sweet and coltish and full of vibrant life… This was the best she could do for her now. Her body would always be safe, always cozy, Her essence would always be at peace here.

The hero is the Duke of Night, ruling the neutral territory of the Lunar Court, and has to balance the competing political demands of his much larger and more aggressive neighbours. The heroine is fae and a witch, and her demon familiar Bernard just about steals the entire show.
The romance unfolds slowly and playfully - the kidnapping mentioned in the blurb is light-hearted and fits within the cultural mores of fae courtship.
The book ends on a BIG cliffhanger, so be warned. Fortunately, the next book is due out later this year.

I couldn't conect with the heroine . I was angry that she was tricked and had to left her home ( they exchanged gifts before he kidnaps her ) and idk 🤨 I just couldn't get into the book's vibe.

⚠️ 𝐓𝐖 : Death, Profanity, Sex, and Abuse
If you’re looking for a simple, fast-paced and funny fantasy romance then you can give this one a try.
The world building is very interesting, the seelie and unseelie Fae as well as the mage which has different powers. I would like to see more of them as the series goes.
Most of the characters are also likeable, especially Bernard, the familiar. Even though he keeps saying he’s a powerful demon, deep down he’s a cinnamon roll whose adorable and care for Emery.
I also like Emery, I can feel that she’s a badass character and it was proven in the last few chapters. I wish I got to see more of her badass side in the next book.
As for the romance part, while I like their sweet moments together and how they are protective towards each other, I don’t feel a huge spark or chemistry between the two of them. There’s no angsty feeling when they are forced apart from each other.
Nonetheless, I’m still rooting for them by the end of the story.
The last few chapters is my favorite part, lots of actions and it also ended with a VERY HUGE CLIFF-HANGER!
I’ve been warned with the cliff-hanger and thank goodness the next book comes out this year too in May (the last time I checked!) so I don't have to wait for a long time.
I’m looking forward to read the sequel, I’m hoping for more actions, feelings between Emery and Night as well as more sassy comments from Bernard!

If you’re looking for a simple, fast-paced and funny fantasy romance then you can give this one a try.
The world building is very interesting, the seelie and unseelie Fae as well as the mage which has different powers. I would like to see more of them as the series goes.
Most of the characters are also likeable, especially Bernard, the familiar. Even though he keeps saying he’s a powerful demon, deep down he’s a cinnamon roll whose adorable and care for Emery.
I also like Emery, I can feel that she’s a badass character and it was proven in the last few chapters. I wish I got to see more of her badass side in the next book.
As for the romance part, while I like their sweet moments together and how they are protective towards each other, I don’t feel a huge spark or chemistry between the two of them. There’s no angsty feeling when they are forced apart from each other.
Nonetheless, I’m still rooting for them by the end of the story.
The last few chapters is my favorite part, lots of actions and it also ended with a VERY HUGE CLIFF-HANGER!
I’ve been warned with the cliff-hanger and thank goodness the next book comes out this year too in May (the last time I checked!) so I don't have to wait for a long time.
I’m looking forward to read the sequel, I’m hoping for more actions, feelings between Emery and Night as well as more sassy comments from Bernard!

Fae, witches, familiars, and all the assortment of other fantasy creatures. The banter between characters is perfect and Rain's sassy familiar is the star of the show. The ending hurt and I will ababsolutely be starting the next book after that cliffy.

Court of Tricksters is one of those beautiful stories that I didn’t realise I needed in my life. The lush character building of Rain, the main female character had me hooked from the first few pages. I read this book in two days, the writing style so melodic and stunningly written. I felt as though for each setting I was a sneaky background character peering into the windows, or hiding behind a tree listening and watching the conversations and activities unfold. The author really has the talent to suck you into the scenes AND send you on a toboggan ride zig zagging you through emotions of excitement, fear and sadness right until the very end.
Our main female character I was absolutely engrossed with from the get go. She is an unsung hero who doesn’t quite see her own worth, but carries terrible memories within her that she would like to forget. Oh… did I also mention she has a specific type of companion with a tardy and bossy attitude who I absolutely loved. He is probably my favourite character apart from Rain.
Night, who is our main male character… oh my goodness what a dream boat. The description of him is dare shall I say… sexy as hell! Some moments while reading I forgot he was speaking to Rain and not me…*sad face*
A full-blooded Fae he embodies steamy masculinity and a sensual demeanour that makes you go weak at the knees. He is probably the character that leads this story the most in regards to its concept as he brings with him a political issue that he is embroiled in which he must find a way to tame the flames before repeated history shows its ugly face.
The character development between Rain and Night is enthralling and had me hitching at my stomach PLENTY of times. Rain’s shyness and sometimes awkward manner make her very relatable but her moments of fiery courage make me internally squeal ‘YES YOU GO GIRL!’
The slow burn development between the two is gorgeous and even though parts between them were familiar and outcomes between them may be a little bit obvious, that did not steal away my intrigue and I was content when their relationship was going in the direction that I hoped it would go in. Stories don’t always need twists and turns at every other page. Sometimes nothing is better than a familiar setting which feels like an old friend you haven’t seen in a while.
Plus, the fact the story features one of my FAVOURITE fairy tale classics made me smile from ear to ear, I won’t spoil it for readers but if anyone knows a good fairy tale may be familiar with a special kind of house 😉
I am so happy this is only Book 1 of the Fae Tricksters series because that ending had me reeling as I wasn’t expecting it! I truly believe this will be a hit with the Book Community and I don’t want my time with Rain and Night to end just yet!
