A Cinderella-inspired, slow-burn historical romance with a paranormal twist set in Taisho-era Japan!

A browbeaten and mistreated daughter is cast out of her home and sent to audition as a bridal candidate for the heir to one of the most powerful families in the land…

Miyo Saimori, the eldest of her clan and yet unblessed by the supernatural talent that graced her father and half sister, is sent off to marry into the Gifted Kudo clan. The young and aloof clan leader, Kiyoka Kudo, finds himself intrigued by this girl who stands worlds apart from the spoiled, social-climbing women who usually vie for his hand. All too soon, Kiyoka comes to regard Miyo with affection.

Kiyoka and Miyo make their engagement real and official, but Miyo still worries she lacks the training to be a wife worthy of the Kudo clan. Enter Kiyoka’s older sister, Hazuki, who takes it upon herself to tutor Miyo—and tease Kiyoka along the way!

Suddenly, Miyo and Kiyoka encounter a mysterious man named Arata Tsuruki. What does he want, and what connection does he have to the enigmatic and powerful Usuba clan that Miyo’s mother hailed from?

it’s really interesting reading the manga whilst watching the anime to see how different they are. the way the anime is written, it’s changing really tiny details in ways in which the main characters take in certain information which might not seem like a big difference but i feel like it does affect their characterisations. this is why i’m some ways i do prefer the manga over it, they’re much more logical which i appreciate. then again they’re probably doing this in the anime so that they can then later make the characters learnt the truth and change their mentalities i suppose as a part of their character arcs but also as a way to elongate certain plot points. but i like how almost to the point the manga is. however i do prefer the art style of the anime

I am tempted to not continue the series. It is very slow moving and it seems like each chapter is a repeat of the last. The FMC is constantly thinking the same thoughts over and over again. I get that it is her biggest struggle, but we are on book four of this.

Pre Review:
So, we just out here forever waiting on the next volume?

Review of series so far:

I was genuinely surprised on how much I enjoyed this. For anyone who follows me and sees my manga updates, I generally prefer really dark, brutal manga. I bought this on a whim to branch out and I was absolutely not disappointed. I adore this story. I read all four of these volumes in one sitting (which I do slightly regret because what am I supposed to do now?) and I immediately started searching for things that were similar to fill the hole this series left.

The art was stunning. The covers are stunning. I ADORED the relationship and seeing it develop and if I don't get more soon, I might actually drop dead.

Oh, this volume was insane and more emotional than the previous ones!

I'm happy to see their relationship develop more and more. You'd think that they take a step back because in this volume they don't really spend that much time together now that he is very busy at work and Miyo is suffering from nightmares and becoming ill because of them. They are apart a good quantity of the volume and because of this, they sometimes feel like they grew apart.

But I don't think so tho... because they are more open to each other. Miyo is not the same girl from the beginning, it's clear that she feels more at home than ever... But she still has some doubts and she is afraid to get hurt, that history will repeat itself once again. So she has a few things that she keeps close and doesn't want Kyoka to know which is understandable.

Kyoka feels like he isn't there for her and it translates into him trying to make her see that he's there for her in any way possible. Some things happen that make her think she disappointed him, but that's totally not it. There's a lot of miscommunication but that's the beginning of a relationship. Slowly, they'll come to realize that communication is key but this is a slow-burn romance and we'll eventually get there!

I love the way this manga is going and I'm a die-hard fan of Miyo and Kyoka. I feel like they both needed each other and before meeting they were missing something, you know? I'm so glad they were able to meet in this life and I know they're perfect for each other <3 I know Akumi Agitogi will deliver on that slow burn because the way it's building up? OOOOF so good! We got a hug at midnight in this volume and I'm ON MY KNEES FOR THEM.

I'm excited for the next volume to come ⋆.˚🦋༘⋆ The cliffhanger?! I need more!!!

"It's important that you give your all to what you can do. Just like you're doing now. But it's also important to honor your own feelings."

Why must each volume be so heartbreaking?! *sobs*

The first half was definitely NOT heartbreaking thankfully because these volumes are VERY good, but so hard to read at the same time. Saying that though, I really enjoyed Miyo taking lessons to be a gentlewoman as well as her asking Kudo what family means to him. I think that was one of my favorite parts of this volume is Miyo seeing what a REAL family is and how family acts. She has never seen family in a loving and positive way, but now she is starting to and it makes my heart happy for her because she deserves nothing less but happiness.

I really really like Kudo's sister! Her backstory made me so sad and I admire her the same way Miyo does because I don't know how anyone can tell that story with a smile on their face (even if it was sad).

I was definitely surprised by that twist at the end! That was something I did NOT see coming and definitely hoping there are GOOD answers to come! Not only that, but I hope it will lead to Miyo finally getting SLEEP without worrying or having nightmares. I also hope Kudo can find peace and that Miyo will be more open to sharing everything with him because she is NOT alone in anything. (Seeing how adamant and open he is makes it even harder to see her struggles.)

So again, another great but also heartbreaking volume!

That ending! 😯

I hope that turn will help our Miyo overcome her hardship, as we can see how she tries her best.

And that panel of Miyo and Kudo is just magnificent. 🥺

I’m still really loving these characters and their story! BUT this one felt like it was lacking just a little bit more interaction between our two leads, and seeing them together is really what brings me the most joy.

There is a decided lack of action as the story goes all in on mopey angst as the lead characters are weakened by sleep deprivation from Miyo's incessant nightmares. Still, I enjoy the company of the characters, and the cliffhanger at the end promises to break open the logjam next volume.

FOR REFERENCE:

This fourth manga is an adaptation of the middle part of My Happy Marriage, Vol. 2 (light novel) (My Happy Marriage.

Contents: Chapter 21. A Match for the Master -- Chapter 22. Arata Tsuruki -- Chapter 23. True Family -- Chapter 24. The Visitor -- Chapter 25. Feelings Unaligned -- Chapter 26. Tear-Streaked Morning -- Special Short Story: To Ease the Pain of Loneliness

We’re really enforcing gender roles in this one. I am a bitter feminist, and I understand that the roles are different in different cultures. But I hate to see a female protagonist so pathetic. I keep comparing it to Fruits Basket, and I really think there are better ways in writing broken, humble, sincere women without making them pathetic. I’m curious about the magic and where this will lead but cut out Miyo.

Not a ton happened in this volume. The majority of it is Miyo’s worsening condition and Kudo tiring. The mix of the supernatural plot and the interpersonal politics continues to be a bit imbalanced. I liked learning more about Hazuki though. I think she’s a great character.

Hello!

Fall is definitely in the air where I live, and I am really enjoying it! With the fall came the release of not only the next volume of My Happy Marriage but also the release of the anime on Netflix. I have already watched almost all of the first season (I believe I have one or two episodes left) and I have really enjoyed it so far. I know it has already been announced that there will definitely be a second season but in the meantime, let’s talk about the newest volume of the manga!

SPOILERS AHEAD

Miyo is still striving and working hard towards her goal of being the perfect future wife for Lord Kudo. With the help of his sister, she is learning more and more every day. She is slowly feeling more confident in her skills. However, the weird dreams are still plaguing her at night and causing her to not feel so good during the day. But one day, Lord Kudo and Miyo meet Arata, a man who may be linked to Miyo’s family and may be able to help with her nightmares.

I absolutely love Miyo’s story. I love seeing her become this whole new person as she slowly learns new things, meets new people, and creates a found family that adores her. I am excited to learn more about Miyo’s powers and her mother’s side of the family. I am hoping we can get more of the manga before season 2 comes out. While I am awaiting volume 5, let me know in the comments what you are reading or watching!

I disegni poi? STUPENDI!

I absolutely love the illustrations of this manga!! The way the characters’ emotions are captured is stunning. And the details that go into each panel are meticulous. This volume is a bit sadder than the previous one. Miyo and Kiyoka are learning how to communicate with one another and they find themselves lonely and exhausted for different reasons. A relationship takes time and effort to develop, and they are going through a difficult stage in theirs. Hazuki, Lord Kudo’s sister, is a wonderful addition to the story. Her bright, happy personality is contagious, but beneath it all, she has a real depth and has gone through a lot. I love how gentle and kind she is with Miyo. A new character pops up and adds some mystery to the story. And with a significant revelation comes more questions than answers. This one ended on another huge cliffhanger and I’m clamoring for the next volume!!
