I am a civil engineer and work with utilities and water distribution on a daily basis. A lot of the issues that the author discussed are not as black and white as he made them appear (I’m specifically talking about water use here). For example, the book jumped straight from “poop in the streets” to “it’s not an issue anymore” without any explanation of what went behind that. I know that I’m probably going into too much detail and expected too much detail, but I was really hoping that methods of cleaning surface water to make it usable would be discussed at least a little. Also, there are downsides to wind and solar other than just being dependent upon weather. Wind and solar appliances take resources to produce that were totally glazed over while every other energy generation method had significantly more detail. Last but not least, this book leaned quite one way when it came to politics. I think you already know which direction. Anywho, it’s overall a decent book, with some things that could use a more rounded view....more

It is set over a period of eight years, from shortly before Poland was invaded until Estelle was settled in America. I'd recommend this to any middle-school aged student and up who wants to learn a bit more about the events of this era.
Well, well, well. That was quite the ending. I can certainly see why more than 1.1 million here on Goodreads have read this book. To be quite honest, Well, well, well. That was quite the ending. I can certainly see why more than 1.1 million here on Goodreads have read this book. To be quite honest, I was expecting that ending simply because I have already read many of the author's other books. That being said, it was still executed very well *pun intended*. Also, I read 90% of this book in one sitting without putting it down.

Since the book(?) was so short, the information was very introductory. I also have to say that there was a lot of name-dropping of cathedrals that I was not familiar with. If I knew more about them, I could have enjoyed it more.

The book has a 15/16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy. That does not mean the book should be in the YA section though. This book is firmly new adult due to the excess of language, topics (very detailed physical abuse scenes/bullying), and talk amongst the guys. Against all odds, this story pulled me right in though. It has been years since I have read a 600+ page book in one sitting. Shannon went through so much, I just couldn't help but feel for her. It was about time that she had someone on her side. Also, I liked how she and Johnny developed a deep friendship over the course of a few months before they became a couple.
3 Stars [would have been higher without the language and locker room talk (for lack of a better phrase)]...more

The characters were well-developed and there was growth in them despite all the hurdles the authors threw their way. I highly recommend this one.
