December 2023 Review: I don’t even have words for how great this book was. I went into it not expecting much but it blew me away. It was jam-packed with unrealistic but exciting events. The characters had depth and it was a joy getting to know them. The plot was so different from anything I have read before with the apocalypse event. I can’t believe the author ended on that cliffhanger. ...more

Instead, it would appear that it was prepped for a third book. Also, I don’t like that the couple fell into bed with each other. If I’m right about a third book, I won’t be continuing with it.

I was not expecting this to be good but it most definitely was. It’s a plot that is fairly uncommon in YA so that added a new level of interest for me. The ending was so open (I was like, “really, it ended?”) but also satisfying if that makes sense.

First, inconsistencies with people. The characters lived in a very rural area yet every other page, they met someone who wanted to kill him. Second, a lot of Cain and Abel type of circumstances as well as a husband who crucified his wife. It just gave me the creeps. Also, despite the fact that (again), they were in a rural area, they get forced to join a cult where old men and young women... Also the government was putting people in gas chambers and killing by the 100s. Basically, there was just a lot of stuff in it for shock factor.

There were hundreds of swears in this book, usually multiple per sentence. Hawk was 15 but acted a lot older at times and a lot younger at times. 2) Max and Hawk were indistinguishable from each other. They both spoke the same (read: swearing), acted the same, and thought the same. 3) As I was reading, I was doing the math. Max had Hawk when she was 15/16?!?!
