I really don't know how to sum up this book. At times it was obnoxiously cheesy (just like the movie listed above), but I also couldn't stop reading it. The characters didn't make the brightest decisions, but again, I read late into the night. (I should also mention that I love the girl-disguised trope and that played a big part in how much I enjoyed it.) The only complaint I have is the ending. It was just...off. Not bad, but not good either. That being said, I picked up book two right after finishing this one. I also ordered a physical copy too. :)

However, I got a Kindle copy from the library and started it right after. This was a good YA book. I liked how the content was actually appropriate for the age group without sacrificing the story. I don't know that I really loved Gabe and Maddie as a couple, but they were both strong characters. The setting was also quite vivid. I have been to Chicago before and reading this book felt like I was actually back in the city.

(Liv and Shane were adorable.) The pranks were top-notch and I was laughing throughout. That being said, this book couldn't decide if it wanted to be Christian fiction or secular fiction. There were multiple conversations about God and Maggie is a strong Christian who spends a significant amount of time in prayer and at church. Shane is an atheist. Also, there was a surprising amount of strong language. This book could have benefited from another round with an editor as there were errors and the book could have been shortened. Reading this review, it may sound like I didn't enjoy the book, but that couldn't be further from the truth. It just needed a little more to reach its full potential.

The book has a 15/16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy. That does not mean the book should be in the YA section though. This book is firmly new adult due to the excess of language, topics (very detailed physical abuse scenes/bullying), and talk amongst the guys. Against all odds, this story pulled me right in though. It has been years since I have read a 600+ page book in one sitting. Shannon went through so much, I just couldn't help but feel for her. It was about time that she had someone on her side. Also, I liked how she and Johnny developed a deep friendship over the course of a few months before they became a couple.

There was literally nothing wrong with this novel. I just didn't enjoy it. Looking back, I have only ever given one book by this author a decent rating, but it was one written with Emma St. Clair. I think that Jenny's books just aren't for me. Don't let this review discourage you from reading the book if you think that it seems interesting. I am just the odd duck out for this one.

A shocked silence falls over the room. I expect it's the calm before the storm. And man, I've never been so excited for a storm. I snuggle into Seb's side. "Oops." I spread my left hand over my husband's chest, flashing my ring for the room to see. "Did I forget to mention that Sebastian's my husband?"
"You look at her like my daddy looks at my mommy. And they're super happy together. So, I'm going to say yes. She is lucky to be married to you."
"And if you feel like killing someone, I'm not above stabbing Adam's gingerbread man with a toothpick." "Excuse me?" Seb raises a brow at me. "Didn't you say you have a tradition where you make gingerbread people in everyone's likeness for Christmas?" Wow, I mentioned that once, weeks ago. This guy listens. "Uh-huh," I reply. "Well, I'm bringing a new tradition." Seb shoots me a cheeky grin. "Voodoo cookies for anyone who upsets my wife."...more

I'll start with the negatives. First, Aiden is a jerk at the beginning. Seriously, I did not know how the author could ever redeem him and was about to quit. Second, there was a lot of language that was completely unnecessary, especially when one character made a point not to swear. Third, a good round of editing could have cut out over 100 pages. Many thoughts were repeated over and over again. Did I mention that there was a lot of repetition? Seriously, there was a lot of repetition. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten. Now I must start over in order to calm down. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten. I think I can get over it now that I have counted to ten two times in a row. Now for the positives. This is not a love-at-first-sight type of story. The characters did not like each other and then gradually became friends and then gradually started loving each other. They got to know each other as people, with goals, hopes, and dreams. I don't see that much in romance, even in the Christian fiction that I typically read. For some reason, this book was just really difficult to put down. I also thought it was super cool that Vanessa was not happy with how out-of-shape she was so she decided to get up and do something about it by training for a marathon. She did not give up even with situations were tough and that is part of why she and Aiden were a good couple.

Unfortunately, I have been in a bit of a reading slump recently and have not enjoyed most of the books I've been reading as much as I typically would. This does extend to this book. I kept on thinking that the book could have been about 50 pages long if the characters would only talk to each other like mature adults instead of avoiding every single hard topic. I do want to add that Eli had a great personality and overall character. He was such a sweetheart.

There was the tiniest huffing sound before she swallowed it down, which is a win in my book. I’ve started counting her blushes. Keeping a mental tally, my achievements glowing like a scoreboard.

I enjoy when a girl attempts a sport that guys typically prefer in books and it was just as fun with a guy attempting a sport that girls are more likely to be drawn to. The narrator is one of the best male narrators I have listened to. It was a little rough-going when he was voicing a girl at times, but I enjoyed it overall.
