it was amazing
bookshelves: ya, realistic-fiction, magical-realism, 2014, dark, family, reviewed, favs-recent

Minute I saw Jim Kay’s cover illustration I knew I’d read this. Edgy, his use of rapid, almost angry slashing strokes and a palette of grey capturing the tone that permeates this novel to perfection. Young adult but read it anyway, only takes a few hours and does what the best fables do, speaks to all ages. It never lets up from this hook of an opening line “The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do.” In the category of contemporary fairy tales I’m putting this right up there with Coraline– and I’m nuts about Neil Gaimen.
I envied Conor his monsters; how useful it would be to distill your fears into something palatable that you could then face head on. While this story deals with bullying and Conor’s terror of losing his mother, just insert your own personal demons. We all wrestle with accepting things beyond our control, maybe Conor’s monsters can teach you a few tricks. It’s dark but it’s also hopeful - he comes out the other side.
I’ll never outgrow fairytales, especially those with a lesson or a moral. “There is not always a good guy. Nor is there always a bad one. Most people are somewhere in between.” Admire their clarity – sometimes need the obvious spelt out. In this one the monster tells three tales, each is ponder worthy:) Good twist that the fourth is left for Conor to tell.
Cons: I dislike having my guts wrenched, thought the author went a little overboard pulling the old heartstrings. Unfair I know considering the tough subjects it tackles. So I’m knocking off a 1/2 a star and rounding it to 5. It's worthy.

“You do not write your life with words” the monster said. “You write it with actions. What you think is not important. It is only important what you do.”

Shaun Florence, I loved, loved this. I cried and cried and cried...and then I really cried. I love the imagery and symbolism in this book and thought the illustrations/cover art were spectacular. Hope you've got a box (big box) of tissues close by.

Florence (Lefty) MacIntosh I do and I'm gonna need it (: It's beautiful though.

Lynda I've read so many great reviews about this book that I went out and purchased it. It's going to be on my reading list for this year. Looking forward to it.

Caroline Gosh, what a stunning review.

This is on one of my teetering t-r lists, but obviously I need to move it up the pile.

And wow, that last quote was toughie....

Kwoomac Beautiful review!

message 6: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Peto Right up with Coraline? Quite a recommendation.

message 7: by Mary (new)

Mary Great review! I LOVE that first line. And also, you know how I feel about Coraline, so I may just have to read this. Not sure if I can handle having my heart wrenched at the moment - just finished a book that knocked me for a loop...

Laura Very, very good and thorough review! My feelings exactly!!!!! Could you imagine Gaiman and this author doing a book together? Fabulous!

The writing is simplistic, hope it doesn't disappoint but don't think it will though Lynda. Look forward to your review.

Agnes Houston Yup, I'll read this Florence. Do you have it?

Katrina Dumas "Just insert your own personal demons" I could use some help wrestling with mine as well. Loved this review Florence. Still not sure I'll read it but very tempted.

Florence (Lefty) MacIntosh Jonathan wrote: "Right up with Coraline? Quite a recommendation."

Yes, I know! Quite a bit different though Jonathan, I know you're a Gaiman fan as well. This one targeted more to teens, leaning more towards realistic-fiction. Patrick Ness did a fine job genre blending.

Love a great opening line, and thanks! What book? Hope you do read this Mary but DEFINITELY take a break between, something featuring sexy men in kilts would work:)

Just finished I Shall Be Near To You. It was powerful and heart-wrenching, and I haven't been able to pick up anything else for the last two days. Might just read it again right away. It was that good. (Haven't written a review yet, but I will once I can get my thoughts straight).

Doug Bradshaw I'm a sucker for these. Guess I'll have to read it. Thanks for the great review

Shaun I agree, this is a fairy tale for adults. And he did pull and tug on the old heartstrings. I literally sat at my kitchen table and cried while reading the last third of the book. No sooner had I got it together than another passage had me reaching for the Kleenex. Usually that bothers me...but this just had so much more I couldn't help but fall for this one, hook, line, and sinker.

I loved the monster imagery and the illustrations. This is truly a work of art on many levels.

I've never picked up a book and re-read it immediately - good on you.

Exactly Shaun, it was a work of art. I was imagining a young person going through the loss of a parent reading this. Wondering if it would be helpful/healing or just to much... I've decided the former. Quite the book.

I've only ever done that with The Sea Captain's Wife, but I have a few others where I've listened to the audio immediately after reading: Outlander and White Rose Rebel.

Florence (Lefty) MacIntosh Judith wrote: "Great review...and I, too, love CORALINE!"

Thanks Judith! So hope you enjoy it. Don't want to mislead, it's alot different from Coraline (includes a strong dollop of realistic-fiction) but I thought it was just great.

Young adult fiction is SO much better now than when I was a teenager - pretty amazing little book Michael.

I always have thought that books shouldn't have "age" or "sexual genre", meant to be read by readers of any age or sexual genre, but I know what you meant ;) Hehehe. yes, definitely YA books nowadays are really good.

I know what you're saying and agree Alejandro, old habits die hard:) Just saying Nancy Drew never did it for me.

Well, I never had the chance of reading Nancy Drew :P And even that I knew that the book series isn't the pinacle of literature about detectives, I still want to read some novels from this series eventually ;)

Hehehe, not always I read books looking for top rating options ;)

Most excellent Kelly, I almost wish we could read this as a group read - but historical fiction it ain't...oh well.
