R.L. LaFevers (Robin Lorraine when she’s in really big trouble) grew up surrounded by shelves of old dusty books and a passel of brothers. She has also spent a large portion of her life being told she was making up things that weren’t there, which only proves she was destined to write fiction. She is the author of over fourteen books for young readers, including THEODOSIA AND THE SERPENTS OF CHAOS, (Houghton Mifflin, 2007) which received starred reviews and was a Junior Library Guild selection, a Booksense Summer Pick, and nominated for the Malice Domestic’s Agatha Award, and the NATHANIEL FLUDD, BEASTOLOGIST series. R.L. also writes the His Fair Assassin books using her full name,Robin LaFevers, but cannot get Goodreads to link the two, so you have to check out a separate profile for that. Just as great as the first book, with maybe a little more action, a little more "Brit-ness," (ie the Navy). Also there are even a few more secret societies to be unearthed, to, in my mind, hilarious results. Also there seems to be the ever mounting shadow of the great war to come...

Only flaw, has to do with the cover illustration, which I love, but where are Theo's gloves? Like she would really be holding that staff and not be prepared!

I am officially in love with this series.
It was humorous, witty and full of adventure.

Some might think it a bit childlike books but wasn't Harry Potter suppose to be for children? I think my age has given me a chance to appreciate books more than as a child.

Theodosia's comments and thoughts made me laugh and giggle more than five times throughout this book. I can't wait for the third and hopefully more.

"Do whatch your step, Lavinia." He advised.
"I've got it. I'm not infirm you know."
He winked at her. "I know that very well, madam," he said, his words causing her to blush slightly.
And may I just say that old, wrinkled cheeks aren't made for blushing?

For undisclosed reasons that are probably only in my head, partway through Theodosia's second adventure I started being reminded of the American Girl series. Theodosia is a great character, smart, brave, and resourceful, and the fantasy elements are well-done and unique. What tripped me up was that I could never figure out how I was supposed to feel about Theodosia's parents. It's the classic kid-adventure dilemma: the parents have to be dim or uncaring enough to let the life-threatening adventure take place, when, as Katherine Paterson points out, it's the job of capable and well-meaning parents to *stop* anything like that from happening. But in a lighthearted adventure, the parents can't be too depressingly horrible. To me, Theodosia's parents wavered among "loving but absentminded," "comic-relief buffoons" and "cruel and uncaring." It distracted me from the rest of the otherwise terrific story.

I find I am enjoying Theodosia and her exploits far more than I thought I would. She's so spunky and Charlotte Parry brings her to life quite well.
These books remind me of the Bloody Jack Adventures byL.A. Meyer- clever young English girl who lives life according to her rules.

I quite enjoyed this book. Told in first person, Theodosia has a very adult (almost precocious) voice, and the author manages to maintain an extremely Victorian overtone as a result. I like my Victorian dialed down slightly (as you may have noticed in my own books) but that doesn't stop me from appreciating a true master at work. It's as though Amelia B. Edwards wrote a YA. That said, there are some who may find this book a little dry because of its language, and younger readers may struggle with it. I have a feeling it would benefit from being read allowed. Good for those interested in Ancient Egypt, museums, antiquities, and Victoriana.

This book is a great sequel to Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos. I loved this book for a lot of reasons, but mainly because:
1. My favorite character, Sticky Will, had a big role.:D
2. The idea for the Staff of Osiris is ingenious on LaFevers' part.
3. Great climax!!!!

I really liked the climax. It was very, well, climactic, unlike some other books that I've read. *Cough The Name of This Book is Secret Cough*.

Great, Great, GREAT book!

So what did Theodosia really expect? She single handedly saves England by returning the heart of Egypt and in return her parts let her clean out the catacombs at the museum. In all fairness, they aren't "technically" catacombs, but they're creepy, dank, dusty, full of mummies and worst of all, dark magic Theo can't even begin to speculate on. She did at least get to attend a gala event due to her discovery of the hidden annex in the tomb of Amenemhab, of course she rather embarrassingly pointed out, in front of all and sundry, that the mummy that was the focal point of the evening was actually the missing miscreant from the British Museum, Tetley, last seen in Amenemhab's tomb. But the mundanties of daily life soon resume their pace, cataloging mummies and shabtis, avoiding Grandmother and her plethora of new governesses (where does she find them all), her parents hiring yet another slimy curator, Weems, and just the basic stopping of evil powers rising up out of the museum's artifacts. But all this doesn't really matter once Theo finds an interesting staff and a golden orb which leads to a jackal statue coming to life and all the mummies in London disappearing and mysteriously congregating at the Museum of Legends and Antiquities.

With her father being the center of the police investigation, because there really is no sensible explanation for all the mummies, how can Theo concentrate on learning from the horrid governess of the day (she's a pincher)? She must find out what is going on. She will need the help of her friends, The Chosen Keepers. But do the mummies have a connection to The Serpents of Chaos? And how can corpses that are almost dust help a group hell bent on world chaos? And who are these Black Sunners? Because the one thing Theo doesn't need is even more secret societies getting underfoot. And Will is acting cagey, and there's a mysterious man in death weeds who's shadowing Will. But at the center of this all is the might of the British Empire, a mighty boat... I mean ship, which proudly tells the world that England is great. But with a war looming ever closer... how long will that might last?

Building on the wonderful story of the first book, the second in the Theodosia series brings in even more Egyptian mythology while layering hilarious exploits of several secret societies with the more day to day trials and tribulations of a girl just trying to save England but being belaboured with an interfering Grandmother hell bent on her granddaughter becoming a lady, no matter what the cost or the final tally of governesses hired. While in the beginning we saw a more solitary Theo, she is slowly gathering more allies in the fight against evil. Of course the fight is having increasingly greater stakes. No longer is it just a restless soul trapped in a rope that brings about boils, but the fate of England and the world. And with greater allies come greater enemies. She is starting to get a list of men who would like nothing more then to see her dead. These men almost seem easier to deal with then those who would worship her as the goddess Isis... but nothing can ever go right. But what I find interesting is the expansion and inclusion of Egyptian history and myth. The idea of Gods walking the earth and leaving behind items of great power... scary to think what might happen if these were in the wrong hands... and I can't help feeling that with The Great War about to start, some things might just end up in the hands of Chaos.

I just can't get enough of this series. It brings back the feeling of what it's like to be a kid and read the perfect book and be totally absorbed in that world. To think about it long after you've shut the pages. To dwell on what might happen next and to hope for the next book as soon as possible. There is a magical quality to Theo, much like the feeling of watching Raiders of the Lost Ark when you were young. It's something different, wonderful and being played out right in front of your eyes and you feel like it's written just for you. A glittering world open for your exploration. I hope you pick up this series and get to have that connection that one longs for with a book.

This is the full review from my blog, which can be found athttp://pattisbooknook.blogspot /if you're interested in following! =)

I'm so excited to get back to Theodosia's world, with her witty humor and demure black cat, Isis. The Serpents of Chaos are wreaking havoc again- and it's up to Theodosia and Lord Wigmere (leader of the Brotherhood of the Chosen Keepers) to eradicate them once and for all. Another secret society becomes involved in the mysterious mummy case for good measure. Theo is also aided once again by her friend Sticky Will- the pickpocket from book one.

The side story of Grandmother Throckton's search for a proper governess for Theodosia was super entertaining, especially with there being a slew of applicants before a match was found. As with many adult characters in this story, the ones who don't outright ignore her are hateful and she's forced into a battle of wits to move forward with anything. That part of the book started to get me a bit down. It's handled in a semi-comical way, but like the first installment, she's a total latchkey child as her parents go off gallivanting. Very little thought goes into leaving her food or a chaperone. Most of the other adult figures are openly hostile or form thinly-veiled insults about her being a bother or too smart for her own good. Poor Theo! Good grief. I wanted to grip all the adults by the ears and scream at them, or do worse to others (like her parents, they could have an unfortunate accident and she'd probably be better off in the care of ANYONE else).

I love the simple fact that Theodosia knows her way around a library. She is a bit like Matilda in her forced underage self-sufficiency and solitary quest for knowledge. Theo also seems like she could be the daughter of Alexia Terrabotti from Gail Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series. Theo and Alexia are head strong and resourceful, and have a similar sense of humor and manners. They also have very vocal opinions on unnecessary nonsense. I would preorder a mashup novel of those two characters immediately!

This book was just as strong as the first, even though I missed Isis a bit. However, as I saw a fellow Booktuber (Allyson) mention on her channel, the cat makes appropriate entrances throughout, making the book feel realistic. To throw her in at other random points would feel forced and contrived. This reader is just a little odd in her feline obsession. I could read any story where cats randomly jump in with no bearing on the narrative- and I'd be just peachy. I highly recommend this book to any middle grade readers or adults who love museums, Egyptology, Archeology, CATS, cheeky young heroines, and mysteries on the lighter side.

Theodosia and the Staff of Osiris by R. L. LaFevers was actually my first introduction to Theo and the rest of her family. But by the end of the second chapter it was clear I was missing a lot by reading this book before the first in the series. So I did something I don't normally do, I returned the second book unread and checked until I had read the first book.

So nearly a year later, I returned to the book and cracked it open with a wary anticipation. I had enjoyed the The Serpents of Chaos but I was worried the first couple of chapters would still fail to draw me in. I was wrong. Coming in its proper order, the book was a delightful Gothic mystery.

In this volume Theodosia's parents return from Egypt with the Staff of Osiris. Shortly thereafter the mummies on display in London go missing and to Theodosia's consternation, end up in their basement.

Theodosia has to find a way to remove the staff's power while keeping it out of the hands of different secret societies who lay claim to it. The plot is more complicated than the first book but rewards for the extra work of keeping the different threads straight.

I started the second book of this amazing series (Theodosia Throckmorton) with much anticipation having loved the first book and I was not disappointed! This is truly a fun, adventurous, and I'd go so far as to even say instructive book. This is Girl Indiana Jones.

In this book, set in London in about 1907, 11 year-old Theodosia, daughter of the Curator of Egyptology at a museum (father) and a female Egyptologist (mother), continues on with her studies of ancient Egypt curses and how to remove them. Sent to the basement of the museum to catalog the treasures there that are not on display, Theodosia makes some amazing discoveries and accidentally causes all the mummies in London to show up at her father's museum. This causes some problems with the law. And then Theo's other problem is that her strict grandmother is determined to find a suitable governess for her. Theo is in more than one fix, especially when she discovers that the Serpents of Chaos from book #1 are back and more determined than ever to take over the world.

I ordered book #3 and can't wait until it arrives!

This is the second book in the Theodosia Throckmorton Series. Loved it. The staff of Osiris is quite a relic it has all sorts of incredible powers. And in this book we are introduced to a third secret society, rather silly and bothersome. This is a children’s book series (like Harry Potter is and filled with incredible realistic characters like Harry Potter) In these books the children are far more intelligent and honest and dependable than the adults. I adore these books. Mad about them. Set in the year 1900, Theodosia is an 11 year old girl with a gift for detecting what Egyptian relics have curses and she's devised ways to rid the objects of their curses. You see she lives in London, her father is the curator of a museum with Egyptian objects and her mother (an American) is the museum's Egyptologist and brings these relics back from her digs in Egypt (not knowing they are cursed) I recommend if for readers age nine to 150.

This fabulous sequel toTheodosia and the Serpents of Chaoswas just as much fun as the original, only this time Theo has to deal with her interfering Grandmother Throckmorton who sets a trio of beastly governesses on her, as well as mummies coming to life all over London and the possibility of her father being incarcerated. But Theo, with the help of her allies, has a plan. Oh, and there is also a jackal helping her, who may or may not be Anubis.

Still no explanation for Theo's curious abilities, but one can certainly hope that will be more stories forthcoming about Theo and her family!

I had a hard time appreciating the heroine of this story, although I love her name.

I was interested in the Egyptian stuff and I liked the respect she had for the history and artifacts. I did like the story line there. I just thought Theodosia was just a little too much! The story was okay, if just a little too far fetched. It was funny to see the curses she set onto the bad guys, and how things came about, but way too juvinile for me.

I am hoping my 9 year old friend will want to read the stories, so that we can talk about them, in the future.

I missed the first book in this series, but Iwillgo back to catch up on what I missed.

I don't know if it had more to do with my mood when I read book one or if this book was just that much better, but I liked this one so much more. I liked Serpents of Chaos, but was honestly on the fence about reading anymore books in this series. So glad I decided to.

The characters felt more real, the story thicker, and the writing style much smoother. There was a twist I saw coming a mile away, but it worked well to mask one I hadn't even begun thinking of suspecting, but that made a lot of sense when revealed.

Theodosia is also just an amazing character. I really love her. At this point I'm all in. I'll read any book she stars in.

this one is better...

WARNING: It will not change your life.

Short and addictive chapters. Perfect for the summer. I give it 4 stars because it's good. It is well written and entertaining. If you want to read the first and not continue, perfect, it doesn't leave you in doubt if you don't want to read the third book, ok, it's not necessary. Personally I liked it although I understand that it is not for all kinds of people. Of course, it is for all ages!🎧🤍

Sequels can be disappointing... but not this one! More danger! More excitement! More forces of evil coming to be faced on more fronts! And this time Theo has the help of her brother (gotta love it when sibs are a force for good and not baddies). Am so looking forward to book #3.

Theodosia and the Staff of Osiris by R.L. LaFevers, a book belonging to the mystery genre was a fantastic read. After Theodosia's first adventure saving England from the serpents of chaos it is no surprise she got wrapped in yet another dangerous situation trying to save the Staff of Osiris. Some memorable moments from the book were, Theodosia revealing that what many thought was an ancient Egyptian mummy was actually a person who had been recently mummified, when Will had ran into some issues with an old colleague from his pick-pocketing days, and when Theodosia had teamed up with an ancient Egyptian statue of a jackal. The book was incredibly easy to get lost in, I could probably read for hours without realizing it because of how well the flow of the book was. A small flaw had to be when some situations got skimmed by, there were a few moments where I wish the author went into a bit more detail.

I would give 'Theodosia and the Staff of Osiris' a 5 star rating. It was an incredible book to read, it met all of my expectations from the first book and went farther. It's a great book for any reading level and helped my knowledge of Egyptian mythology grow.

The Serpents of Chaos are back! Missing mummies from museums and private collections all over the city suddenly turn up at the museum where Theodosia's father is head curator, and the police suspect him of stealing them. But Theo, while cataloging old artifacts stored in the basement, discovers the staff of Osiris, and then finds the golden orb that makes its magic work to call mummies. As she struggles to figure out what to do with it, how to counteract all the curses, how to save her father, and how to get rid of all the governesses that her dreadful grandmother keeps foisting on her, she enlists the help of an urchin pickpocket and a Naval admiral. But are they really helping?
NOTE: This is NOT the hardcover edition, but the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Sandpiper paperback is not listed in the editions and I can't find a way to add it. I wish they'd get these straightened out - the previous book in the series is the same. HMH Sandpiper paperback published 2008.

Empat bintang.

My kids and I have watched the HBO series based on this series of books, and so I got the books to read with my kids for homeschool. The series is set in London in 1906, and is about a girl named Theodosia Throckmorton whose parents are archaeologists who run a museum. Theo has a rather unique ability to see and sense ancient Egyptian magic and curses, and has taught herself some methods of countering them. There are sinister occult societies and all sorts of adventures, as Theo finds the Staff of Osiris, which has the power to animate the dead (like mummies!) and and even more dangerous power... Fun. My kids (ages 7 & 9) enjoyed the book. They also like the show, but the show is VERY different from the books!

Once again, Theodosia accidentally gets caught up in plans for the Serpents of Chaos to try to rule the world and has to find a way with her trusty street urchin Will (& his brother, Snuffles) and secret society head, Wigemere, to foil their plans again.

She also has to contend with her Grandmother getting in her way by constantly getting her new governesses---none of which are up to the task of Theo who is infinitely smarter than then. Her parents still don't know the depth of her knowledge, but it would be nice if they "stumbled" onto it in the next book, so that she can have normal adult help and not have to sneak around in order to save the world. Again.
