This book was excellent and not my first by the author so I was reminded in these pages how much I love Ta-Nehisi Coates' writing style.
Eight powerful essays packed with information, history, and the observations on the eight years Barack Obama held the highest political office in this country.
I learned a lot of things, I lamented a lot of things. I nodded my head a lot and there were many passages worth underlining and coming back to.
I was familiar with some of the history and had previously read several of these essays, and not as strong as Between the World and me, but still a very solid read. Especially enjoyed the addition the context that was given before the essays, fascinating.

I was somewhat familiar with the lingering effect that discriminatory housing policies and practices have caused, but this is a good reminder filled with images and specific instances on how these awful practices were upheld, sometimes by the very people who were meant to protect the community in the first place. Many people will have their own take, "they were protecting housing values" was a theme brought up over and over again and Rothstein does an excellent job dispelling this and many other myths used to defend segregation in housing and education.
Highly recommend. Will surely read this again....more
