Her worlds and words are pure magic, and I bow down to the imagination it takes to weave story like she does. So much emotion, so much complexity, so much unlike-anything-I’ve-read-before. Definitely one of my favorite series of all time, and one I will be revisiting for sure in the future.
Edit: Reread the book in audiobook form almost as soon as I was done finishing it the first time—still amazing, and it’s a series I will revisit again and again and again....more

I grew up reading the Babysitters Little Sister books, so the fact that Karen & Andrew and Boo-Boo were featured in here brought back warm feelings of my childhood reading experience. I love how colorful and cartoonish Raina Telgemeier’s art style is, and I’ll definitely be continuing with this series. Literally had a grin plastered on my face the entire time, no shame....more

I enjoyed this twist on The Little Mermaid, and also the fact that it's a stand alone fantasy--need more of that in my life. Reading from the POV of such a brutal main character was super refreshing, and I liked the simplicity of the world building overall. I docked some stars because the middle was slow for me, but I inhaled the last 100 pages. Side note: I don't often talk about specific kisses or OTP moments, but there was a scene during the Boss battle that set my soul on fire. Just saying.
Dec 2018 update: Increasing my rating to 4.5 stars because I still can’t stop thinking about this book months later, it’s definitely going to be one of my favorites of the year....more

It was definitely a slow burn fantasy for the first 150 pages or so, but the last third more than made up for any slowness in my opinion. The brutality of the world is fascinating and the twists kept me turning the pages. That ending though!! If you like YA fantasy and appreciate a strong cast of female characters, give this one a go....more
